My engine was replaced under warranty at about 40,000 miles so it's only the chassis that's growing up.
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check miles' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. not to blow out your candles, but check the miles on this car

Other than that....maybe I should change "soon to be" to "one day will be".

If you're willing to spend lots of dollars, and replace/rebuild components large and small without regard to the financial wisdom, you can literally keep a car running forever.

I plan to change the front seat out for something lighter, maybe next year.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I calculate that I will roll 100,000 miles in my 2002 996 C2 on my commute home tomorrow. I will try to get a photograph, but I will be commuting after all so no guarantees.
It's a bit of a paper trophy though. My engine was replaced under warranty at about 40,000 miles so it's only the chassis that's growing up.
Car is great though, not good I say, but great. Looking forward to another 100,000.
It is great to see these sort of miles on a 996. There is a lot of worry out there that 996's can't make it that far. I had my intermix at 50,000 but am now almost 60,000 and looking forward to turning 100,000. Not sure anyone has beat Mcaster with his 235,000 on his Boxster
I do 15000 miles per year, and I plan to keep this car for another 10 so that would bring me to 250,000. I'll be an old(er) man by then though.
Half a million miles (eds link)....if I keep it up at the rate that I'm going I will be at least 70 years old by then. I dunno boys, I don't usually keep cars that long.
the good news is that if I keep up with my oil changes, maybe do the LNE upgrade, and don't do anything stupid, then I have very little to worry about. The car still drives like new and the trim and interior are holding up extremely well.
Those air cooled guys throwing smack about the 996 have it all wrong, although you admittedly don't hear it as much anymore.
After city and hwy mixes with not easy on the throttle all the time I had 18.5mpg. No way to make it around this island keeping it all hwy for even an 1/8th of a tank.
That is unreal. It is a bit surprising that the engine made it so long. The 90 MY engines had the infamous sealing ring problem. Maybe they did the ring update when they resealed the engine at 150k...
Very cool to see a half-million mile car look so good!
Yea Dog !!
that's the way to drive em'
for me the freeway is just about perfect distance from my house where the car is "just warm" enough to hit redline every morning.... a couple gears worth...2nd, 3rd and sometimes when I am real lucky and traffic is extra light 4th
then like you about every few miles she stretches out and gets another run up through the upper rpm's - yippy, people wonder why I pull into work with a big smile....it aint because I ate beans last light
Congrats!
I have about 400 miles to go to get to 100k on mine. I'm driving it to Atlanta next week for some meetings so I'll probably hit it some time on the way back home.
So far it's a console delete and I removed my rear seats..but my wife made me put one back in because I haul one of my children around back there and there's no neck restraint without the seat back. I plan to change the front seat out for something lighter, maybe next year. Problem is that I kind of got used to the heaters in the stock seats.
Other than that....maybe I should change "soon to be" to "one day will be". It's taking me a while to get around to tearing into it.
I did weigh it when I first got it though...3050 lbs with a half tank of gas. I thought that wasn't too bad actually.
Many years ago, there was a VW Beetle that passed 1,000,000 miles, and when they interviewed the owner and asked him what was still original on the car, he said without hesitation, "the steering wheel."
If you're willing to spend lots of dollars, and replace/rebuild components large and small without regard to the financial wisdom, you can literally keep a car running forever. I have taken a number of cars to 200,000 miles without spending a lot of money to get them there. For what it would have cost to get it to the next 200K miles -- well, boys, I just bought a new car instead. Same dollars, less cache, fewer worries.

Larry, I think that is unique to these high dollar part/labor cars that we drive. An American made car is different. I have a Yukon with 200,000 miles on it and it would almost always pay to fix it rather than buy new. I bet every moving part on that car can be fixed for $10,000 versus paying $50,000+ for a new one. I think the economics of our Porsches is completely different as you describe.
Rwiii,
what you say may be true, but I have seen and heard of many of these cars that have gone hundreds of thousands of miles. The SC is certainly legend in that category. Maybe the 996's haven't been on the road long enough for people to consider getting this kind of mileage as routine. For me, I plan on driving year-round, at about 20K per year. That puts me 3.5 years from the 100K fraternity. Then another 5 years to get to 200K.
By that time, I will be arguing with my kids about whether I should still have my driver's license considering my "advanced age."
But after waiting for multiple decades to get my fingers wrapped around that three spoke wheel on a daily basis, I will be driving it till they pry my cold dead fingers off of it!!!

I'm with you Larry, just saying that you can almost always fix almost everything on an American car for tens of thousands less than what a new one would cost.
I support your point totally that you can get hundreds of thousands of miles out of a Porsche but repairs can get expensive as you point out.
