Suggestion
Performance-wise, replacing the stock motor mounts with RS mounts or in the case of air cooled cars, solid mounts, produces a noticeable difference in the way the car responds to throttle inputs and gear changes and even how the car behaves while transitioning in turns.
Leading evidence: 'Replace stock motor mounts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace stock motor mounts' (1 discussions). It would seem to me that a service jack under the engine, just to take the weight off of the existing motor mounts, should allow you to remove the old ones and replace with new ones - one at a time.

Back when I ran an air cooled carbureted car people used to warn me that my solid motor mounts would rattle my mixture screws loose.

I have a friend locally who dabbles in parts and he and I have talked about getting me a set but I didn't ask where.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In fact I ran solid mounts at the back, and clubsport mounts at the transmission and it worked great.
What is the deal with people "upgrading" their motor mounts? If the motor mount is working properly, it should hold the engine securely, right? What's different about the upgrade - (are they GT's or Turbo's??)
And, is this something that a DIY can easily do? It would seem to me that a service jack under the engine, just to take the weight off of the existing motor mounts, should allow you to remove the old ones and replace with new ones - one at a time. Or am I over-simplifying the process?
thanks for the info - I feel like such a newbie!!

First off, you are not oversimplifying the process. Support the engine, remove the old mount, install the new mount.
Performance-wise, replacing the stock motor mounts with RS mounts or in the case of air cooled cars, solid mounts, produces a noticeable difference in the way the car responds to throttle inputs and gear changes and even how the car behaves while transitioning in turns.
You will have noticed in your years of observing car engines that when an engine is revved up, it lurches over to one side. This is especially noticeable in American muscle cars and of course some of these even have chains connecting the engine blocks to the chassis of the cars to prevent the motors from twisting right out of their mounts.
The effect is a little more subdued in Porsches but its nevertheless still there.
When an engine twists (torques) like that you lose some of the energy to useless rotation of the engine, it destabilizes the car as the heavy engine lurches around, and it kinks the shift linkage. Granted the movement is not all that great in terms of centimetres, but the effect is noticeable and when you're racing these things matter.
Stiffen the whole lot up, and these issues are mitigated.
So why doesn't Porsche install stiffer mounts from the factory you might ask? One word...vibration. In the extreme case, solid mounts will rattle your teeth out. This is especially noticeable if the transmission mounts are made too stiff (ask me how I know). Even a moderately sporty motor mount is enough to make most women complain, and even some men (*ahem*Boxsterdrivers*ahem*). Back when I ran an air cooled carbureted car people used to warn me that my solid motor mounts would rattle my mixture screws loose. Of course this never happened but over the years I've noticed that people like to spew a lot of bullsh*t. In fact I ran solid mounts at the back, and clubsport mounts at the transmission and it worked great.
You may also have heard that the newest GT3 cars have adaptive engine mounts installed. These are tricky (expensive) little devices which firm up when the going gets sporty and loosen off around town. It's done with magnetically charged particles suspended in hydraulic fluid or something like that. You'd think they would just install stiff mounts and be done with it but of course the average GT3 buyer nowadays demands a little refinement too so we're stuck with complicated technology to solve a simple problem.
The point is that stiff motor mounts are significantly sportier. If you can stand a little vibration then it's well worth it.
RS mounts will be one of my next upgrades in fact. Bonus points for keeping the wife out of my car.
Jasper:
Thanks so much for all the detail. I really appreciate it. Where do you find them? It seems that on Pelican they only have the standard OEM mounts.
larry
Hi Larry...to be honest I haven't looked into where I would get them. I have a friend locally who dabbles in parts and he and I have talked about getting me a set but I didn't ask where. Alternately I would probably get into the back of an issue of Excellence and peruse the ads.
My friend and I started talking about WEVO mounts, but he said that the Porsche RS mounts were better. I was drunk at the time so if he told me why I don't recall.
The Porsche RS mounts would come from Porsche, so Sunset??
You can get them from; Gert, Sunset, Suncoast and FVD. The RS are the better option for several reasons (even on full race cars) as they are firmer then stock but not solid. When you go solid you are introducing a great amount of vibration into the chassis which can cause sensors to start acting up (from Knock sensors to O2 sensors~ was talked about by several other people in Spec996 thread).
You will get the added stiffness from the RS without the rigid attitude from solid or semi-solid mounts.
Cheers
The Wevo mounts are too hard for most people's taste on the road. Going with mounts that are too hard can cause a cascade of other issues from tranny mounts to activating knock sensors. The RS mounts have a civilized amount of rubber in them, so there's still some isolation. A massive upgrade from stock, but livable.
Having just bolted up my engine to my new RS mounts I was wondering if the torque spec for the RS mounts is the same as the standard mounts (63ft/lbs) anyone?
