BEFORE you buy it, you really need to have it checked for frame-damage/paint-work to make sure it wasn't in any accidents that carfax may not show.

He also checked the computer and could not find any trace of over-revs, and also looked at historical engine check/problems and could not find anything on records or on computer readings.

Just a point for everyone to note, although probably not the case here - Dealers source used cars to put on their lots specifically to set expectations with their regular customers.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I am about to make an offer for a C4S from '03 in great condition with 45K miles on it... Carfax is clean and it has been serviced by a porsche dealership until 30K (incl) and a toyota dealer since then (oil & filter mainly every 5/7K miles)
It has the PSE and GPS as well and of course is a manual.
The car has had 2 owners, and is now owned by a dealer who got it 2weeks ago from the 2nd owner as a trade in.
The guy wants $42K for it - is it a good deal given that the dealer doesn't have the full service record else than what is on carfax + and the inspection+lube he did when he got the car 2 weeks ago. I am also planning on doing a PPI.
Is it worth to buy a 3year-CPO for a 45K miles car- ie. if somthg needs to happen, it probably should have happened before 45K miles. Otherwise how much does a 3year CPO cost on avg?
Thanks
As far as the price....it sound pretty darn good to me! You can't purchase "CPO" warranties from non porsche dealers, so do some research as to what they are offering you. As far as not having documented service history for the past 15k miles, I wouldn't worry too much.
Just make sure you get an independant pre-purchase inspection so you can make sure there are no issues with the car. These are great cars. Do you have any pix? The two options you mentioned are fantastic options. Good luck! What color?
J
$42k sound good if the car is in exelent conditions, could you list the options? also get the PPI and make and offer based on that ($40-42k) also a CPO is not something that you can buy, you could buy a aftermarket extended warranty for about $3-4k. a CPOd car is a car sold by a Porsche dealership only.
Absolutely correct about the CPO - but, personally, for an '03 4S with 45K miles, I would spend the $$ to get an aftermarket warrantee, just for the peace of mind.
If the owner of the dealership owned it, the car is right, no sweat, I'm sure he's no dummy. Now for one of the sales people, no way.
People with deep pockets tend to be careful especially when he's made a living off other peoples cars.....
Thanks for all your answers,
I tested drive the car yesterday, it was awesome. The clutch was very smooth. I started 3rd gear from a stand still and here again no problem. Even started in 4th with the foot on the break & gas at the same time and - as expected stalled when I released the clutch.
All options are working.
Additionally, the car has a 3M protection film, lojack, boze premium sound system, sunroof etc...
The break pads are 90%, oil & filters were changed last week.
I bought the car for $42K - left a deposit for $500 contingent on the results of the PPI which will be done on sat. by a local porsche dealer (no independent mechanics in RI)
I posted a couple of pics - I can't wait for the PPI results to come back
Finally the previous owner traded it in for a brand new range rover sport.
Gorgeous car, nicely optioned. Price seems right. I certainly won't tell you what I paid for my '04 2 years ago - but it only had 1100 miles on it when I bought it. I've driven the hell out of it, and now has 2900 miles on it. OK, Tim - let's go!
Ahh, Phil, Phil, Phil.
Oh, the hyper-inflated promises of you driving it this year... have you done 500 miles yet?
Just put the poor thing out of it's misery! You know the miles don't roll off the odometer when it's parked.
Sigh!
< Tim shakes his head and thinks "Self, Phil is either getting delusional or senile. Hell he probably has conversaions with himself. Boy, come to think about, I sure am glad I didn't say that out loud on Rennlist. They would accuse me of the same thing!" >
Phil, if you are "up to" 2,900 miles on the P-car, that means you have only driven it about 400 miles this year. You have spent more to replace your sulfated battery than you have on gas for the 996.
BTW - you therapist called me yesterday. He wants a Carrera GT, so you are going to have to double your sessions and go from two to four per week. Obviously, you need the additional help.
Can't really say that...maybe he just took the easy way out (not having to watch and cringe as prospective buyers grind the gears) and traded it in on a family car or suv.
Just a point for everyone to note, although probably not the case here - Dealers source used cars to put on their lots specifically to set expectations with their regular customers.
My local BMW dealership always buys-in a used Porsche to have sitting out front to give potential BMW customers the impression that Porsche drivers 'trade-up' to BMW.
The local Ford dealership plays the same game - they always have a MINI out front, telling potential Ford customers that people with MINIs 'upgrade' to a Ford.
My local Volvo dealership often has a Porsche or a Mercedes out front - same deal.
It's just car dealers playing psychology games with customers - but they all do it, so look at the car lot with that in mind.
I did NOT trade it in!!! Bastards!!!
Oh and BTW, what a great deal on that 03 C4S. It's gorgeous and great options. Pending a PPI, do it and don't loook back!!!
Tim and others, check out the new pics in my sig.
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that the PPI came back - spoke to the Porsche mechanic who inspected it (it is not the same garage I bought the car from and there was no independant P-mechanics I could use in the area).
He told me the car was in great shape, 80% left on the tires, 80% on the break pads (although there was some slight sign of rust on the rotors) . The compression was tested last year by Porsche so he did not do it again as it came back clean. The 6 coils (not sure what he was talking about) were changed last Nov. Clutch is fine. On the RMS, he noticed a
slight damp
, although it was not leaking. He told me it was no problem at all and that there is no way any P-car dealer would have it replaced even if it was under warranty. Should I be worried about that when he tells me it may never become a problem.
He also checked the computer and could not find any trace of over-revs, and also looked at historical engine check/problems and could not find anything on records or on computer readings.
All in all he believes there is nothing to worry about - even if I use this car as a daily driver. He was also able to retrieve the service record for the past 25K miles as they serviced that car in the past. He mentionned that the brake fluids had not been changed in a while and probably will have to be done soon -
how much are we talking about
?
What do you guys think - is it what one calls a clean PPI? am I OK to go then - or should I be worried about the RMS?
Thanks
Paul
Did they check for paint-work, alignment, frame-damage?
Also, you can't believe what he said regarding the last 25k miles. 1st off, it's against Porsche's policy to give out ANY paperwork/information on a car, as it's the previous owners property, sort of like medical records. Some states it's even illegal. Anyway, the guy may have messed up, but if you're smart, you'd ask him for all the paperwork so you have proof AND info for the next owner, helping resale.
This is why it is SO important to get RECORDS from the previous owner/s when purchasing a car, especially a Porsche.
BEFORE you buy it, you really need to have it checked for frame-damage/paint-work to make sure it wasn't in any accidents that carfax may not show. Other than that, as long as you feel it's a tite car, paper-work or not, i'd go for it!!
