Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It's just off and on (assuming you've changed a belt some time in your life).
Leading evidence: 'Replace belt some time in your life)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'easiest thing' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend doing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
The serpentine belt is probably the easiest thing to do.

Suggestion
Even though I've worked on various cars for years I've never spent so much time changing 6 spark plugs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 99' with 599** miles on it and am looking to have the 60k service performed. Is this a service that I could perform myself given the appropriate literature? Anyone performed this service on their own car? Where could I find the procedures, parts list, ect. Thanks
If you're mechanically inclined and have tools then sure.
The spark plug change is the biggest bitch...not because it's hard, but because there's limited clearance to work with. BUT once you get the hang of it, the process is really not that difficult.
AudiOn19s
+1.
The plugs are the biggest PITA. They can be done, however. Took me hours but I made due with the tools I had. You will need extensions for the rear most plugs. 2 elbow and wrist joints help also. But what a feeling of satisfaction when you get done!!
I would do it again too.
Note...IIRC the s-belt requires a big-*** wrench that I didn't have...24mm or something weird like that to release the tensioner. I think this was the only tool I didn't have to complete the work but borrow'd it from a good friend. The belt itself once you get to it is a 2 minute deal. Add 5 miuntes to get the airbox out and you're good.
I found a 2" extension, swivvel and 4" extension got the plug change done...some holes require a different configuration of the 3 pieces to get access though.
I think the serpentine belt is just an inspection and replace if needed for the 60k, no?
Also, to test the WOT position you'll need the Durametric software.
I did my 60 k service. (I have a lift so that helped). I pulled the mufflers and that made access to the plugs a LOT easier.......... everything else in the service was a snap.
My short answer is yes, you can certainly do it yourself. The spark plugs...oh my... what a huge pain in the a$$. If you could access an auto lift it would really help. Even though I've worked on various cars for years I've never spent so much time changing 6 spark plugs. I would have gladly paid someone else to do it. Serp belt is actually very very easy. A lot of the other items are merely inspections or relatively easy.
I had estimates from local dealers at 1400-$1600. Even if you had to buy all the tools, you are still ahead of the game.
My actual cost.
Oil: 9 qts mobil 1 - $50.
Filter: $25
Plugs: $70
Belt: $25
Air Filter: $23
Coil packs: $300 (what the hell, while you are there do it!)
60K mechanical inspection at the dealer: $160
Total 60K service. $653.
Take your time with the plugs... they aren't that bad.
I think changing the plugs on a 996 should be some sort of initiation. I have to go back in to do the coil packs. But not to fear. It's like runing a marathon. Once you've done it once...
I also need to change fuel filter. I changed to transmission fluid and bled brakes/clutch too. I recommend doing that.
Once I get done with all I want to do for a 60k service, it will be time for the 120k service
Guys, next time, remove the cans it it will easy as taking candy from a baby.
The cans only have 3 nuts per side and then slip out the pipe from the cat pipes and you will have easy access to all 6 packs/plugs.
I had bypass pipes on my car when I did it. it's the tub of the car that creates the space constraints on the rear two plugs on each side...specifically the passenger side.
