Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Now that I've done it, I wish I had replaced the coils while I was in there.

He also checked the computer and could not find any trace of over-revs, and also looked at historical engine check/problems and could not find anything on records or on computer readings.

The 6 coils (not sure what he was talking about) were changed last Nov.

What do you guys think - is it what one calls a clean PPI?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that the PPI came back on the '03 4S I am in the process of buying (see post down below for pics options etc..)
I spoke to the Porsche mechanic who inspected it (it is not the same garage I bought the car from and there was no independant P-mechanics I could use in the area).
He told me the car was in great shape, 80% left on the tires, 80% on the break pads (although there was some slight sign of rust on the rotors) . The compression was tested last year by Porsche so he did not do it again as it came back clean. The 6 coils (not sure what he was talking about) were changed last Nov. Clutch is fine. On the RMS, he noticed a slight damp, although it was not leaking. He told me it was no problem at all and that there is no way any P-car dealer would have it replaced even if it was under warranty. Should I be worried about that when he tells me it may never become a problem.
He also checked the computer and could not find any trace of over-revs, and also looked at historical engine check/problems and could not find anything on records or on computer readings.
All in all he believes there is nothing to worry about - even if I use this car as a daily driver. He was also able to retrieve the service record for the past 25K miles as they serviced that car in the past. He mentionned that the brake fluids had not been changed in a while and probably will have to be done soon - how much are we talking about?
What do you guys think - is it what one calls a clean PPI? am I OK to go then - or should I be worried about the RMS?
Thanks
Paul
Sounds perfectly clean. But what is this about a compression test being done last year so they don't do it again? Are you paying to have one done? Did they provide you with the leak down results from the previous compression test?
How many miles are on the car?
The "coils" are the plug coils. One on each plug. That saves you $300 plus labor and should be done every 60k miles (or more IMHO). If he's done the coil pack, I would feel sure the plugs are done too. Sounds like you're good to go!
Sounds like a sound car to me. I can't speak to the leaky seal, but apparently your mechanic is knowledgeable and OK with it.
As far as bleeding the brakes/clutch. This is an easy DYI and all the info is right here!
Sounds like a new Porsche owner is in the making! Congratulations and send us Pics of the car ASAP!!
Indeed I am not paying for the compression - PPI was only $130 or so. The plugs have not been replaced... will need to do that next time I service the car.
As far as the RMS damp, should I get $750 off the tag price as I probably will change it within 2/3year and pick a $1500 bill?
Will shoot pics as soon as I get the car :-)
Hmm...
Odd to change the coil packs and not the plugs. To each their own, I guess.
If you want to get to know your car intimently, you can change the plus yourself.
Asking for $750 off for damp RMS sounds like a fair request good to me.
pat058,
Please explain why you are saying to R&R the coils at 60k miles? I don't remember seeing that on the 60k service or hearing anything about this. I replaced the plugs (in March of this year...bought my Pcar in February) and the coils and connectors looked fine to me; I've put well over 100K miles on coils (ones for multiple and single plugs) and never had to change them....that's why I'm asking your reason.
Thanks,
Patrick
Last Car,
You replace the plugs at 60K miles. He is saying to the OP that it is strange to replace the coils alone and not replace the plugs since you are there already.
What is "slight damp"? RMS or IMS leak doesn't necessarily result in a steady drip. The seal can just weep resulting in an oily spot on the underside of the car around the area of the bell housing.
An idea is to wait until the transmission has to come out for some other reason e.g. clutch replacement, and have both the new 997 RMS and IMS repair made at that time, regardless of whether it is leaking. My understanding is that after the new 997 fix, recurrence is rare.
If you want to hedge against a major repair bill, get a 3rd party warranty. Remember, past PPI performance is no indication of future results.

What Paul996 said. The plugs are recommended at 60k. Most folks change the coils while they are there. I'm not sure if that's specifically recommended at 60k with the plug change. I didn't change my coils because I didn't have them. One of my boots was split so I ended up ordering a boot. Now that I've done it, I wish I had replaced the coils while I was in there. I mean they're in your hand at this point. Dumb move on my part.
I'd call this a clean PPI. Brake flush is easy - buy yourself a motive products bleeder for $40 and DIY. If I recall, you seem to be getting a pretty good deal on this price-wise.
Thanks for all your answers. I asked the guy to take $750 off and I should get the answer from his boss tomorrow.
As far as the DIY... I would love to - if not for the money at least so that I can get to know my baby... but at this point I am soooo retarded that I do not even know where the breaks are on the car. So I'd rather let a professional do it - especially if I do it at the local Indy.
Will post pics soon
