I changed the pieces out on my car to improve the appearance, just as Bumble did.

And for performance minded folks, these aerodynamic changes does matter, a great deal actually....

Hi All, just got a new wing and wanted to drop a few lines and pics in regards to Misha's GT2 Wing for the 996.
When I started modifying my 996 I was VERY hesitant to do anything to the body itself. I wanted to keep the classic "911" silhouette and was deterred from doing any "bodywork". After half of year of seeing some great kits on this board as well as attending some of the gatherings, I decided to start searching for a wing. I definitely didn't want something overpowering (afterall, I have the "narrowbody") but I definitely wanted to give the car a more aggressive look. After some research, I narrowed my decision down to the Ruf C2 Wing and the Misha 996 GT2 Wing. During this time I saw a bunch of posts on the Misha wing so I decided to take the plunge.
First off, Misha's customer service is excellent. I was in the LA area (I live in OC) and asked to take a look at the wing prior to purchase. Misha and I metup at local Starbucks and he gave me a brief intro on his company and product. As far as fiberglass parts go, I was hesitant from the getgo, but after seeing the piece in person - all concerns were erased. I've modified 9 cars now in my lifetime (some with fiberglass parts, some with GFK [a composite]) and there are always concerns whenever dealing with aeroparts made of fiberglass. (Just take a look at the next Civic you see with a fake veilside bumper on the freeway at 75 MPH). The wing consists of 2 main parts: (1) the wing blade (2) the pedestal. The pieces come apart for paint and minor adjustment.
Paint/Labor:
The bodyshop that painted and installed my wing is the same place I've been going to now for 5 years - they've worked on Ferrari's, BMW's, Mercedes, etc...in particular, he's done a lot of Hamann, AC Schnitzer and TechArt body installs so I hit him up about the quality of the Misha wing as far as fiberglass parts go. He said it was definitely on par with the stuff he's seen from the popular "tuners" - and even better than a few! (Hats off to Misha for good fabrication). All parts needed for installation are included, I opted to add "grates" to the two intakes to ensure that no large foreign objects get sucked in at speed. LOL.
Overall Impressions:
I'm very happy with this wing. In particular, I love looking at the side mirrors and seeing the edges of the blade come down...I didn't notice any rattling or movement at speed and I'd definitely recommend it to those looking for a rear spoiler...
For what it's worth, I'm not sponsored by Misha nor did he pay for this review, just some insight to a good product and my experience that I wanted to share w/fellow Rennlisters...
I like the look of the wing, just not sure I would have done a wing that big on a narrow body. Kind of overpowering compared to the rest of the rear end.
Not to mention you don't have the ponies to back up that wing
Was a big concern of mine initially, but happy after I installed it.
Very true, but to each his own...it's a different story if I was rocking a "GT2" sticker/emblem or something, no frontin here...and besides, if that's the case for everything, anyone with a turbo front bumper on a C2 would not have the ponies to back it up either
Oh, I'm not bagging on you for having it. I've got a C2 Cab with turbo front and rear bumpers and a turbo wing. I am a big fan of the turbo styling. Agressive, but not too "fast n' furious"
The quality is excellent on Misha's stuff. It really does look nice. Just not a big of giantic wings on C2's, or really on most of the 996's, unless you've got the ultra-wide body conversion like Vince's I-forged car. Looks a little ricey to me. But hey, it doesn't matter what I like
You like it and that's the important part!
Excellent point. Didn't realize (as mentioned) you had to have the ponies to back up a wing like that in a car that has a top speed of almost 180 stock.
Car looks great!!! Wing really finishes it off nicely. Great choice.
Looks great. Is it functional? Meaning, is it adjustable and able to be of assistance for track weekends?
Oh, and how does one get a hold of Misha? Website?
Chad
Bumble996,
First, let me say that I like the way you set up your spoilers. Very tastefuly nice! Love the color by the way
I wanted to respond to your post at 6speedonline but membership is still locked out. I wanted to ask you where you got your front spoiler attachment. Correct me if I'm wrong, that's a stock front bumper with that extra attachment below?? Dyou mind telling me how much was it also?
Thank you
Thanks for all the comments guys!
Not adjustable for the track, functional though...(integrates GT3 type intakes)
Try his site - they're in the middle of a redesign, but should still work.
http://www.996wings.com
How are you not bagging him for having the wing? He's got a narrow body. He put the aftermarket wing on. You say it's ricey.
IMHO, what you're doing is ricey... making one model car look like another when clearly it is not and never will be... unless you're just foolish with your $$$ which you clearly are not for being able to afford a 911.
I think the wing looks fantastic. The 996 Turbo wing looks like an afterthought. Porsche definitely did it up right on the GT2 with the big wing. And who cares if it's not as fast as a GT2? Clearly, what percentage of cars out there are? Even the N/A 996s... not very many.
Life is short. Enjoy!
was this designed with aerodynamics in mind or was it just a sketch brought to life? if it was designed properly, what is the aerodynamic change? which front lip/splitter was it designed for?
or am i wrong and this is purely for looks?
To each his own when it comes to mods and everyone seems to have an opinion, positive or negative. Just let the man live his Porsche life!!
Without different mods/taste, all of our cars will look identical. NOw thats something to think about.
Thanks for the backup Ben, it's all good - as Deputy mentioned he wasn't directly trying to bag so no harm no foul - everyones taste is different, that's what makes cars so interesting.
Hmm...some good questions here. I purchased it purely for looks - but here's my take:
It uses a GT3 pedestal and incorporates a GT2 wing blade...the OEM pieces of each were designed by Porsche (not necessarily to be used as a Hybrid like this wing) so it must be acceptable aerodynamic wise...
That wing looks great, Hey guys can you help me? I've seen a wing on alot of 996's but I haven't seen it in any of the wing websites. I don't know what it's called but I think it's been refered to as a "Taco Shell" . And will it work on an 04, Targa
that sounds like it should be the MK1 GT3 aerokit tail....
this link should help:

Misha:
Is it possible to make one like that for me? But!! Make it adjustable for track use? Fill me in on the details:

Thanks!!!

Choi:
I'm not trying to start any turmoil here. He posted it and everyone's entitled to their opinion, and he's being a good sport about it. You leave yourlself open to the good and bad when you post on here. Maybe I didn't explain myself as well. You sounded a little harsh. I like the quality and the fit of the wing. It's well done for an aftermarket piece. However, typically, the only cars you see giant wings on (and this is a big wing) are honda civics and true race cars. I must see 20 of these a day on imports in FL, and it looks "ricey" to me. Cars that have this wing and actually need this wing usually have extreme amounts of HP and it's absolutely necessary for downforce, blah blah blah.... Just not my taste, but that's okay. Variety is the spice of life
It's what owner thinks that is important. Just looks out of place to me on that particular car.
As far as it being "ricey" to make my car look similar to a turbo...clearly you don't understand the meaning of the word. Most people use it to refer to using "japanese" styling parts on euro vehicles. I changed the pieces out on my car to improve the appearance, just as Bumble did. I like mine, he likes his. Neither one of us are trying to be anything we're not. We're just modding away like the rest of us
According to your terms, Porsche must be getting a little "ricey" too. Have you seen the 40th edition???
Apparently the factory likes the way that nose looks too.
Oh, as far as cars being as fast as the NA 996. There's lots of them. Take a look around. Most of them costing a hell of a lot less money. (evo, wrx, new mustang, corvette, etc...) And yes, I think the wing on the WRX looks retarded
Bumble996, The wing looks nice. I was in SoCa 1/12-1/14. Was that your ride in the TOYOTA Torrance parking lot. Parked near by to check it out... very nice details. I commented to the guy I was with, that the car could use a rear wing... if it was you, turned out very nice.
In the beginning, God created the earth with thousands of miles of winding highways... and then God created the scenery to surround those highways... for God had a master plan.... the 911. And then God created the 911.
When the Angels saw what God had created they were in awe. But God wasn't satisfied with his creation and wanted it to fly amongst the angels that served him. Finally, God gave the 911 "wings"....
rice? I don't think so ... if its one car that deserves a wing... its the 911
Your Porsche is not the 40th anniversary version.
"Rice" isn't limited to Hondas. Big wings are hardly considered "Japanese" styling. There is just as much rice as there is kraut.
There's a huge diff between the piece of steel rag on back of FWD cars v. well-designed, painted, clean big wings on the backs of 911s.
Sounds like you're just averse to fixed wings, period.
Get over it, man. Wings were never out of style. Wings are here to stay. and it looks damn good on this dude's car.
and all of you concerned about the aerodynamics of your car... don't worry, even 911s can't fly.
Hayaku, I also have Misha's wing. I wanted a porsche style wing and the factory aerokit was rediculous(7K). Mishas is copied directly from a GT2 and put on a GT3 decklid. It functions well. No, it is not adjustable, that's not a negative to me.
However, I did notice it made the car a little squirelly at high speeds on the track, hence I added a turbo splitter...instant fix! The car is now rock stable, esp in the turns where it got loose before.I've had it at 155, no problem. If you add a wing to these cars, you must add a front splitter for high speed/track stability. If you only care about looks, I guess it doesn't matter much, it looks ok with 20 inch rims too.
Believe me, if I thought my car looked ricey, I'd take that sucker off!
I plan on doing extensive track testing this season with it. I believe Misha also has a GT3 versiion that might be better suited for a narrowbody car.
Chris
Thanks for the insight Chris.
Without wind tunnel data or even coast down evaluation (crude form of determining drag and rolling resistance), i'm purely speculating that the combination continues to reduce lift, especial since you stated adding a front splitter fixed its instability at high speed... I highly doubt this wing element is adding downforce at the moment...
And for performance minded folks, these aerodynamic changes does matter, a great deal actually....
DPdog-
If you think you need serious hp in order to have such wings/aero kits, you are wrong. Such kits and wings are designed for downforce which can only be achieved at highspeeds. A 90hp car can go fast and maintain its speed regardless of its hp, so more hp doesn't mean that the driver is going to drive fast. Aero kits with large wings are made for the fast driver on the road/track who will need the downforce approximately after the speed of 80mph. Bottomline here is large wings/aero kits are good for people who drive fast and need the downforce at highspeed rather than having a whole bunch of hp, but packing serious hp does help getting the car up to that speed at a more excellerated pace.
Mike-
I will post it as soon as I get it back from my buddys shop for the installation(Ive been unpatiently waiting so I can post for the gang to see the final result). The set up is pretty much like the Kirbster but with K28s.
Vove: Thanks for the lesson...I'm familiar with vehicle aerodynamics though
If you really wanted to get picky here, I'm sure some people would say you'd have to match the front spoiler and side skirts to that wing somehow or it'd be unstable. I'm not one of those people. I really don't care. I dont' think you can drive that fast, that hard on the street for it to really make a difference. You could put a ten foot wing on there for all I care, or do nothing at all. My point was that the only people/vehicles you see actually needing such a wing are true race cars. It just happens that a lot of big HP track cars have these wings. On the other hand, there are a lot of great track cars (ie miata, z3, s2000, boxster) that have no giant wing and somehow manage to make it around the track without being blown off into a wall
It just boils down to cosmetics for most people. I think there are very very few people who actually purchase these wings for function.
Besides, I've managed to make it through 34 year of driving, sans "giant wing" without spinning out of control down the highway
Geeesss...How did all this get started??? He posted pics. When you do that, you get yeh's or neh's. I gave it a neh. What's the big deal. He's being a good sport about it. Not everybody has to like everything that's done or posted on here. I'm sure if I posted pics of my car somebody would say that black rims look stupid on a yellow car, or that they just don't like yellow, or whatever.... Who cares?
So anyway... Benjamin Choi... Just curious, what are you driving these days and what mods have you done?
Dpdog, no punn intended. Im first in the performance area but looks is part of my package too. The best of both worlds and yes I drive like a hooligan so I need the aerodynamics.
And for the Kirbster, I have never like seal grey til' I saw your car with the gun metal bbs, perfect combo.
Whoa! This thread is out of control!! - haha, just kidding.
For comparisons sake, here are a few more pics:
