Bavarian, do you recommend the 5 minute hack to disable the built-in cut-off?

I happen to use the switch every morning when I leave the house as I don't want to wake my family, but other than that I never turn it off.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, I am a newbie on this board. I just purchased a 2003 C4S last wednesday with 8250 miles on the clock. Its like a dream come true, ever since I was a young boy, to own a 911. Everything has been great, only that the exhaust note is too soft IMO. The only modification I want to do is the sport exhaust from Porsche. I have been through the agony of selling the aftermarket stuff from my BMW M coupe, so no more of that, plus the C4S has the perfect setup for the street and a little bit of track IMO. I want to put the 3M Clear bra on the car, does anyone know which brand has the neatest setup for the car? Thanks. Looking forward to chating and meeting with you guys. Pics to come...
Regards,
Richard
yeah i mean come on, its like an unwritten rule in car forums, if you are going to say you bought a car, you gotta post pics to make it worth our while
in any case, brilliant car, get a sport exhuast, and you might not ever buy another car!
Congrats! Go for the sport exhaust. I added it to mine about 6 months after I got the car. I had the dealer install it. I saved about $800 by not having them install the switch and related hardware. Besides saving money, I heard that if you have the switch, the exhaust still goes quiet at some rpm's even in the loud position.
Congrats.
Very nice car.
Where are you located?
Many areas have occasional get togethers / drives, etc.
If you happen to be the the SF bay area, there is one on Feb 19th.
Sucoast, Braman, and Brandywine all sell the PSE, around 1400. Just make sure it fits the C4S, tube length slightly longer. I understand you had a negative experience with aftermarket on your bmw, but for the money, check out GHL, Fabspeed, you won't be sorry!
GHL makes one just for the C4S, fits nice, sounds great.
Great, I am in the san jose area. I would love to join the drive on Feb 19th. Can you please email me the info ([email removed])? Thanks.
OnemanTX, do you mean that if I don't have the switch, the exhaust will not go quiet at that certain rpm?
And guys, here are the pics as promised. Enjoy...
Regards,
Richard
Looks great! The factory PSE has an on-off switch, but also has a built-in cut-off between 35-50 mph. This can be disabled with a 5 minute hack. But if you don't plan on ever shutting it off, it is much easier (and cheaper) to just install the exhaust without the switch. I highly recommend it. The two other must mods are clear side-markers and the B&M short shift. Enjoy!
Congratulations! you are going to love it.
This is so true, I never thought I'll be truly content with any car..till I bought my C4S, now I don't yearn for even the lambo's or ferrari's at all (well...atleast not as often
). There are times the track junkie in me wishes a gt3 or the adrenaline junkie in me wishes the rush of the twin turbos...but at the end this is the car I've been dreaming of since childhood, it gives me a smile each time I drive it...when I see it in my garage...and when I just think about it. Have fun.
Bavarian, do you recommend the 5 minute hack to disable the built-in cut-off? Can the dealer do this? And this is probably a stupid question, but is $1800 from the dealer for PSE too expensive? and also is it true they charge 8 hours of labor for the exhaust and switch?
Thanks.
rxt27:
the setup with the factory switch does make the car go quiet in the speed range mentioned to meet Swiss noise laws. The hack really is only 5 minutes. There are two that are on renntech. Here is the one I used:

pricing is about 1400 to 1500 from brandywine in pa. if you have the dealer install with the switch, it will cost around 800. some here have had a muffler shop like midas install just the exhaust for 100 or less. either way it sounds great, and is the best mod in my opinion.
As you guy's are talking about mods., I want to weigh-in with my opinion here. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve, there is no such thing as the best mod. I was strongly considering the PSE, but as I want to do a lot of DE track events...it wasn't the priority. I have the gt3 seats ordered, I'll be getting a bolt-on DAS roll bar and five-point harness. As I think the standard seats are totally inadequate for spirited tracking.
My next mod. will mostly be an exhauts mod., like PSE...I like the sound of it. But, with the C4S the weight is a problem, so when I'm ready i want to look for some alternatives with even a lower weight. So, it all depends on what you want to achieve at the end.
Jeeva, Joe at fabspeed made me a set of bypass pipes for a C4S just for the track check it out. My next mod will prob be some descent track tires.

The 5 minute hack is a no-brainer. you should do it yourself, it's really simple, and I doubt the dealer will do it for you. The installation of the exhaust itself is supposed to be a simple job for any muffler shop or similar (mine was OEM with the car, so I don't know first hand). I happen to use the switch every morning when I leave the house as I don't want to wake my family, but other than that I never turn it off. There is a lot of work involved in installing the switch, so 600-1000 in labor could be right. (Then again I was quoted 600 in labor for the SSK, which I did myself in 45 minutes!)
