I don't know why they used a hydralic clutch, similar to the 996TT.

Overall, the feel is drastically different from a base, and was a pleasant surprise as I bought the car without a test drive.

When I test drove a base, it didn't feel much different than my Box S (disappointing actually).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Buying my first pcar, a custom-ordered '00 Box S in the "correct" Arctic Silver color was a dream come true. However, buying my first 911, a 40th Anniversary, was THE DREAM come true.
(Warning: This is not a bash against a base 996. I would have been happy with one, but the $20k discount made my decision a no-brainer)

The X51 is amazing! Although the same torque as a base, the flatter torque curve is more useable and feels far faster than the 25 hp difference would make you think. Overall, the feel is drastically different from a base, and was a pleasant surprise as I bought the car without a test drive. When I test drove a base, it didn't feel much different than my Box S (disappointing actually). The transmission, which was improved for the 02 year is noticeably better in feel than my Box S (notchy and loose) which shared the same transmission as pre 02 cars. The exhaust sound is not as good as PSE, but better than base. Materials and build quality are also improved (thankfully) over pre 02 cars. I am not a luxury kind of guy but the perforated full leather and painted bits (sport seats, centre console, dash trim) all make for a pleasant experience.
Dislikes
I don't know why they used a hydralic clutch, similar to the 996TT. The feel just doesn't feel natural, like my Box S or base 996. Again, since I didn't test drive, this was an unpleasant surprise. My 911 isn't a daily driver so it always takes me a few minutes to adjust to the clutch. Handling is nowhere near the balance of my Box S. Steering is not as direct, and the 911 understeers too much. I really enjoy canyon driving (Malibu) and I just can't dive into a corner with the confidence I had with my Box S, or my '96 LT4 Vette.
Track
However, the additional power of the X51 makes the 40th a pretty good track car. Trap speeds are 20 mph faster than my Box S on some of the tracks around here and it is great fun to rotate the car with the throttle. Brakes, as on any pcar, are exceptional which gives me great confidence to stomp on the pedal at 140 plus.
Questions
Does anyone know if the additional 25 hp of the X51 required a beefier tranny, similar in feel (hydralic) to the 996TT?
Why does the exhaust sound better on a X51 over a base?
Lower you car and align out the oversteer. My last 996 was perfect and balanced to perfection....
You will enjoy a much more precise ride to go along with all that power....
Sweet ride and a great decision based on the 20k discount!
