clean racy mesh on the lady is almost as well, clean racy mesh on my other lady...

I would first research non-eBay places so you have a better understanding of the costs of the better wheels, and then set your budget based upon your findings.

I'll be using mine for mainly on-road, with occasional track use (not yet gone to a DE, but absolutely certain I will).

Allows the use of the 235/40/18 and the 295/30/18 tire setup on narrow body cars.
Use sets, sometimes the better quality wheels pop-up

eBay is good if you are looking for factory used sets, sometimes the better quality wheels pop-up on there but not often.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What's the RennL opinion (s) on aftermarket P-car wheels? I see lots of them on ebay, all seem to be "made in Italy" I'm referring to the factory reproduction stuff: GT3, etc. Seems "Wheels Dynamics" handles a lot of these. They are advertised as "almost as light as the originals and stronger".
I'll be using mine for mainly on-road, with occasional track use (not yet gone to a DE, but absolutely certain I will). Looking at 18" for better handling, plus the nice visuals.
18" wheels don't offer nice visuals
aftermarket is the only way to go. factory wheels should be treated as spare snow day wheels.
do a search dude seriously cuz you'll be better served. this has been discussed a countless number of times.
good luck.
I've searched. Seen a lot of wheels discussed, but found no firm conclusions on the quality of the aftermarkets. Are they really as strong or stronger? I like the look of 18"s. Mainly interested in the performance, above 18" is more show than go to me.
quality is better than oem. why? factory has pricing to consider cuz most people don't know to begin to appreciate a nice aftermarket wheel. in the aftermarket, you can go crazy on quality and get a stronger/lighter wheel though at a greater cost.
i recommend you check out champion motorsport one-piece wheels. forged in japan. lightweight. and i'm sure pretty sturdy. will cost you about $1K per wheel. if i were into outright lightweight wheels, i would've gotten these in 19s.

talk to alan baylis. he's a great vendor sales guy to work with. i bought my 19x12 3-piece Work Brombacher wheels off of him and they fit great.
good luck,
I guess you're talking about two different things guys. The OP talks about replica wheels that look like OEM but are avail. on ebay for $500 - $1000 (4 wheels) and you Ben talk about aftermaket quality wheels that are sometimes even produced by OEM wheel manufacturers like BBS but exceed the quality that Porsche asks them to produce ($1000+ per wheel).
you're right hwk. i'm skipping right to the end which is the ideal solution but takes $
i know the vast majority of the rennlist brethren will predictably fill in the minutia middle
Somtimes true. But there are also a lot of crappy aftermarket wheels out there that will let you down if you do anything more than cruise on them. The fact is that OEM wheels are extremely well built. They're just heavy. As with everything from golf clubs to racing bikes, good quality AND light weight together are going to cost you serious money. Be suspicious if they don't.
FWIW, my vote is for 18"s. Good look, while preserving the handling you paid for when you bought the car. Just sayin'...
THere are a few guys here that have purchased replica wheels. So far I have not heard any negatives about poor quality. CCW wheels

might be a good "middel of the road" alrernative. No matter what wheels you get, just make sure you get the correct offsets.
I would stay away from 'reproduction' wheels as they are usually much heavier than stock and the quality not so good, yeah the price on eBay is luring but they are not factory wheels and not ht ebest for your Porsche.
If you want a good quality wheel for the street where you have that drivers feels of the road, which the Porsche is designed for, then go with 18's, they will also be good for the track. If you want a bit more wheel then go with 19's but you do loose some feeling of the road.
Like Tim said, the off-sets are key to the correct wheels.
CCW, Wheel Dynamics, Tire Rack are your best sources. eBay is good if you are looking for factory used sets, sometimes the better quality wheels pop-up on there but not often.
I would first research non-eBay places so you have a better understanding of the costs of the better wheels, and then set your budget based upon your findings.
That's my 2 cents on the subject and I was doing this just 6 months ago myself and ended-up with a great set of 19" OZ Superlegggera III's, but these are not my track wheels.
bruce, i know you know that i know there are crappy aftermarket wheels out there. how many times have i called it out in this forum? do a search, right?
like i said, it'll come at a greater cost.
I have 2 sets of aftermarket rims and 1 set of OEM. All are about the same weight (in the same ballpark anyway
). I use one set of AM rims specifically for the track and the other specifically for daily driving. I don't think you'll have a problem with the Wheel Dynamics rims (I got my daily rims from them).
But the most important thing is to get what you like. It's your car and you drive it.

hey it's all good if you admit they're ****. it's not cool for school if you're telling us they're awesome when in fact they look worse and "work worse" than even the stock wheels.
Porsche OEM wheels are cast, but are generally good quality wheels. Reproductions of Porsche wheels are also generally cast and quality can vary by Mfg, but they are generally a few pounds heavier than the OEM wheels (from what I have seen)
The next step up are forged. These wheels are generally (depending on mfg) lighter, stronger, and more expensive.
The guys at wheel enhancement

carry more Porsche wheels than any other company that I am aware of and have a lot of fitiment knowledge (no affiliation). The tire rack doesn't carry as many high end wheels but they also have a lot of knowledge.
IMHO, 18's are the way to go with the 996. They may not look as cool as 19's but they are lighter, ride better, and offer a superior range of tire (size) choices.
I think some 18s look better than others. My favorite are the Champions. Hope to order (in 18") soon (but look at the stock market! and my wife wants another horse)
yes we do share the same taste. i woudln't usually say much here about wheels here because im coming over from the import scene and its very diff than the pcar scene.
my last car:

ive always been a fan of work wheels. i'm even still sitting on my Rezax IIs (being sold)... once i find the right car, you can bet the wheels are coming shortly thereafter... i really dig the BBS LM look on the porsche...
I purchased my wheels from Wheel Dynamics in Culver City, CA. They are 19's, made in Italy, and pretty light. The customer service was great and the price is right.
My $0.02.
Cool- sounds like the Wheel Dynamics repro stuff is OK- that's what I was hoping for. If the offset is OK, and the are only SLIGHTLY heavier, I can live with that. They also mention they are stronger (the GT3 repro in particular-which is one of the lighter Porsche wheels anyhow, a little extra weight probably won't hurt too bad), which , if true, I can certainly live with.
Here's the spec from their site:
"GT3
These wheels are the best setup for track days. Allows the use of the 235/40/18 and the 295/30/18 tire setup on narrow body cars. Wheels will come in silver but can be done is RS Colors Red, Blue, and Black. $1499 per set!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wheels come 18x8et50mm 18x8.5et40mm 18x11 et63mm 18x11et45mm"
What would be the best offset for a '99 996 C2 out of the above choices? The 40 and 45?
