Replace plastic with glass (I notice that the newer 02+ have glass and it is smaller since it can't fold in 1/2 like the plastic).

Getting ready to have the top replaced (and the window as well) and need a tinted rear window b/c this heat and sun in Vegas is murder on the car (and me). I know you can't tint (film will crack, peel, etc. when folded) the plastic but I would prefer one of the 2 options to be possible: 1. Replace plastic with glass (I notice that the newer 02+ have glass and it is smaller since it can't fold in 1/2 like the plastic). or 2. Order some sort of smoked or tinted plastic window. Can either of these be done? (obviously I would prefer option 1, but either will do at this point) Suggestions anybody?

You can't change out the plastic to glass, you'd need an entirely new roof to do that (including the metal frame), and I've not heard of anyone succesfully doing that. I've been told, though, that you can put in a pre-tinted plastic back or heavy UV protection, and that should work fine. There are places in LA (names escape me) that specialize in that sort of thing, my assumption is that you'd find one in Vegas pretty easily.

You should be able to get it done locally. Perhaps a auto upholstery shop or a marine shop. Anyone who sews plastic to canvas could do it for you, and I'm sure they can get tinted plastic. I have heard of new plastic windows sewn in for as little as $300. Kevin

can be done..but get ready to say farewell to an arm and a leg. It's just not feasible. be happy spending $600 on a new sewn in window every once in a while
