Suggestion

Personally I'd go back to the shop and advise them you expect them to replace with the factory specified oil, but if you drain the oil yourself, drain into a clean container and save for your other cars most of which specify 5w-30.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got my car back from the mechanic and they filled my car with 5w-30, is this OK? It is Castrol Syntec 5W-30, should I drain it? Should I have brought my own Mobil 1 0W-40 oil to the shop w/ me? Help, will I destroy my engine?

POST 2Original post

Nah, chill. This time of year, with these temps - no problem. If you're in extreme cold the 5w wouldn't flow as well as 0w. I think my 99 probably used 5w-40w. I don't think 0w-40 was made.

POST 4Original post

I have 4qts 5-40 mobil 1 from my 994,I now use 0-40 mobil i in my 996.Can I still use those 4qts of 5-40 as oil to add when I am low in the 996? Thanks

POST 5Original post

It's not the 5 vs 0 you should be worried about, it's the 30 vs 40 (or 50) that should be of concern. Do a search on oil weight and you'll learn more than you ever want to know about the great oil debate.

POST 6Original post

Agree with c4. 30 is too light. Plus Castrol Syntec 5w-30 is not Porsche approved but Castrol Syntec 5w-40 is. Note that the lastest from Porsche approved list are 0w-40 or 5w-40 from various brands. Hope it helps. - Ahsai

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, what should I do? Drain the oil & refill with 0W-40? I am concerned that I might hurt my engine in the long run!

POST 10Original post

Sorry to say but I would drain and refill with 0w-40 if I were you. A lot of people favor 15w-50 saying that 0w-40 is like water (too thin), let alone 5w-30 (which is even thinner than 0w-40 when hot)! - Ahsai

POST 11Original post

The 994 is one of my favorite Porsches. I'm thinking about selling my 992 to buy one.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

do i need to replace the oil filter as well? I would think not, since it is new...but its soaked w/ 10W30... or am OK to just drain the oil & refill w/ 0W40??

POST 13Original post

The filter should be fine to stay in. Being soaked in that weight oil won't matter. That'll just "wash" out with the other oil.

POST 14Original post

Personally I'd go back to the shop and advise them you expect them to replace with the factory specified oil, but if you drain the oil yourself, drain into a clean container and save for your other cars most of which specify 5w-30.

POST 15Original post

I agree they filled it with the incorrect oil so it is their responsibility to correct the mistake for free

POST 16Original post

What in God's name would posess them to put that oil in??? Where are you located delerium? That is what makes the difference.

POST 17Original post

Any winter rating such as 5 or 10 with 30 weight should be reserved for use below 50 degrees F. If you are mostly above 50 F you should use a 40 weight with your choice of 0, 5, or possibly 10. Also if temps are really high a 50 may be be a choice. These recommendations are for a Syn oil. I would have the shop change it to the recommended oil if you are on good terms with them, if not do it yourself. Some times if you complain about the food and send it back, you know what the cooks do don't you?

POST 18Original post

I have gotten into the habit of bringing my own oil in when I get it changed!

POST 19Original post

And therin lies the reason I do ALL my own oil changes. I know exactly what is going into the car.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for your input! This kind of stuff drives me nuts! I live in Sunny Southern Cali. so temps will be above 65F in the daytime from now until next winter! AND, i just called the mechanic & told him he added the wrong oil.. he asked why, and I said that the sticker they left on my windshield says 5W-30.. he says that the sticker is wrong & that they use 0W-40 on all P-cars 2002+... he said that his hands were dirty so someone else wrote the sticker for him (this shop services all euros so 5W-30 is also on tap) Now, should I believe him??? Or just drain anyway for peace of mind? what would you do?

POST 21Original post

this is why when i go to my indy. i bring my own oil. just for peace of mind. i would change oil. too much risk. try ask the guy to pay for the oil. or at least, half of the money. where's 1999porsche? he will tell u even "40" is no good, you need to get "50", such as mobilOne 15-50.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a way for me to determine what kind of oil he put in there? Like some sort of litmus (sp?) test?

POST 23Original post

Seems too much risk. $60+ vs. suspicious oil for another 5k miles? Plus if you drain the oil yourself, you will realize how easy to DIY and that will save you money in the future oil changes (and peace of mind). I think unless you are there when the guy is pouring the actual oil you bring, not sure bringing your own oil is much safer. Someone absent minded may just forgot about your oil and fill it up with whatever they use. Or worse, they would just swap out your oil. Just me 2cents. - Ahsai

POST 24Original post

Haha ... excellent topic for the following news item. Posted by a co-worker. "For those who go to those quick oil change places, you might want to check this out. I cant believe how shady some people can be. http://www.nbc4.tv/video/9152183/detail.html# "

POST 25Original post

Its hard for me to imagine that you trusted the guy well enough to leave your car with him, yet now do not know whether to believe him on this. One thing I would do is find a shop I can trust. Sooner or later you will need maintenance more serious than an oil change, and you will surely want someone in whom you have trust.

POST 26Original post

Only 3 people touch my car (1) The dealer for warranty required work (2) My local indy owned by our local past PCA chapter prez and been in business for over 30+ years only working on P-cars (3) Myself.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ya, I will need to re-evaluate him & perhaps find a new shop for the 996. He can still work on the bmw tho!

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, so I drained the oil & put Mobil 1 10W-40 in. I only had to fill 8.5 quarts, but have heard some people need to fill with about 10 quarts?? Then again my oil filter was already soaked w/ the 5W-30... Or was it originally 0W-40 like the mech. said??? When I poured out the old suspect oil, it was very watery, so maybe it was 0W-40? Is there any way to tell? I am starting to think that the mech. was honest.. grrr.. can you tell the diff. between the two oils by touch? This oil felt thinner than the 5W-30 that I usually use... I think....

POST 31Original post

8.5 quarts sounds right without filter change. I use 9 quarts with filter change (exactly what Loren listed in the instruction). I really hope "10w-40" is a typo in your message....note that 10w-40 is NOT on the latest Porsche approved list. I thought you planed to put in 0w-40? You could reuse the oil you drained on other cars if it's clean. I don't know a good way to tell the weight of the oil by feel. I heard you could send an oil sample ($20) to one of these oil labs and they will tell you how much metal is in your oil. Maybe they would tell you the weight too. I'm not sure. - Ahsai

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I used 0W40! Thanks for your help Ahsai.

POST 34Original post

you can send the oil to Blackstone Laboratories for testing.....
