Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced all chain guides, but did not replace the tensioners (my mistake).
Leading evidence: 'Replace chain guides' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check live data' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I checked the live data, it would randomly not advance the timing.

Maybe check timing on that side again with the set up tool?

Fast forward, recently the engine started to rattle on the driver side, but deviation was still the same, so I decided to replace the bank 1 and 2 tensioners together.

Anyhow, after the first start, I noticed that bank 1 has a 6.5 cam deviation and engine run smoothly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
I have 996 3.4L. I rebuilt the engine about 2 years ago (my 1st engine rebuild). I replaced all chain guides, but did not replace the tensioners (my mistake). Anyhow, after the first start, I noticed that bank 1 has a 6.5 cam deviation and engine run smoothly. I read that it is at the edge, but OK, so I did not pursue eliminating it. Fast forward, recently the engine started to rattle on the driver side, but deviation was still the same, so I decided to replace the bank 1 and 2 tensioners together. Also, randomly, the variocam would set code P1530. When I checked the live data, it would randomly not advance the timing.
During the tensioner replacement, I verified that the timing is good and put everything together. I started the engine, it rattled again at 1st start; however, at this time, the engine had a crackling-ticking noise on the driver's side, and the deviation was 8.5.
Does anybody have any experience or know what is going on? Why would deviation increase with a new tensioner?
The variocam actuator or solenoid is bad. U can bench test the soleniod bit if the actuator is jammed (orings fail and lock up the piston) it needs rebuilt or replaced. Slacker Racing has the oring kit. Tons of threads on all of this if u search. Either way its probably engine out again to renove the valve covera to get to the parts.
Timing gear sliped? The tensioner takes the slack out of the chain so it can effect deviation. Maybe the actuator is just stuck in a different spot? Did u pump up the tensioner with oil before the install?
Maybe check timing on that side again with the set up tool?
Before I closed the cam plastic covers, I manually turned 720 degrees to verify that the timing is correct on both sides; it was good. Yes, I did pump up the tensioner before installing. I also cranked the engine until I got the oil in the system before I started the car
Still could just be that the actuator is just jambed up and keeping the system from working properly? All just guess but at this point u r gonna have to get back into the motor.
