I've had some tell me I need to replace the starter before it wrecks the flywheel, while others say it's normal and to leave it alone.
Leading evidence: 'Replace starter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutch and update your rms seal, etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Mine was replaced two months ago and is now making that noise.

Right now I'm leaning toward leaving it for now...has anyone ever had to replace a flywheel?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got the brief grinding noise (approx 1 second) when starting the car. From the archives, it sounds like this has been due to a failing starter, catching on the flywheel.
Car starts right up, no hesitation.
So, can I let this go, and live with the noise?
Or do I risk doing further damage to the flywheel?
I have the same noise. Mostly happens with the 1st start of the day. Sounds like when someone tries to start to car after its already fired it up. Just had a complete service....no problems.....other that a leak in the coolant tank....goodbye $650
It might be a glazed polyrib belt, the belt tensioner pulley or, more likely I'm told, one of the two idler pulleys. Do you hear the noise after the engine already has started-then you get a brief 1/2 - 1 second screech? I've had a similar problem off and on for about a year (about 2 out of ten starts, especially when the temp is low). I swapped out the belt, which actually made it worse the first half dozen times I started the car (which makes me think I'm at least on the right track). The problem seemed to improve for a few weeks, but returned. I just ordered the idler pulleys and the tensioner pulley today. I'll let you know if that solves the problem in a week or so. If it does, at least its a relatively inexpensive and easy DIY.
Hmmm, yes please keep me posted C4. Though I'd describe the noise I'm getting as less of a 'screech' and more of a chatter/grind for that brief 1/2- 1 second after engine starts.
Who told you it might be the pulleys? A lot of what I'm hearing is suggesting starter/flywheel grind...
As I said the other thread you posted this, you NEED to have it checked out and not just describe it. I am not sure what your aversion to having it looked at is. It could be something as simple as a loose clamp on the exhaust or something as serious as signs of potnetial internal failiures. This is not something you should just ignore and solicit input from what others "think" it might be.
Dell, I just got back from the dealer-where, (of course)-we could NOT recreate the noise.

I'm soliciting the feedback to compare other's experiences and outcomes.

I'm told it would be a lot more expensive than a starter...but assume it wouldn't be cause for an engine rebuild, would it?
Any ideas of costs for the worst case scenario by letting this go? (flywheel and starter)?
The flywheel is roughly $1K for the parts and about 8 hours labor most of which is dropping the tranny and accessing it. If you ahve to replace your flywheel you should replace your clutch and update your RMS seal, etc.
I just recently did this and spent roughly $2000 for clutch, flywheel, various seals, new bolts, etc.
Well I had exact that problem for over a year. A screaching grinding noise, sounded like the startermote didnt catch. Second time round always it would start no problem and without the noise. But the last major service they replaced the serpentine belt and had you not remonded me I had forgotten all about it. The noise has gone and I have done 12,500 miles since the belt was changed. I would but bets that your belt needs changing or tightening up.
IF you need to do the starter motor (I have to...), consider getting a refurb unit for nearly $300, but you get a $75 refund when you send your old one in (Vertex....). In my case, I get the sound as the pinion ring spins after it starts, but my biggest issue is that once the engine warms up, it wont start unless it cools off. Odd. Good thing I am getting it taken care of next week!
I ahd exactly the same problem after 60k and it was diagnosed as the starter motor. Is this a common fault I wonder? Starter was replaced and now almost 12mths later I am sure the noise is starting to return but just on the first start in the morning. All I can say is that I am glad I took out an extended warranty when I bought the car. Apart from this problem the car has been perfect. I have no oil leaks but the engine needs a monthly top up of oil (about 1 segment on the oil indicator) and I am told that tis is normal.
Took the car on the track for my first intermarque sprints and had no trouble one on one against a Maserati, TVR and a new Aston Martin (driven very carefully with just 400k on the clock and driven straight from the showroom to the track!) . I got soundly beaten by a GT3 but thats OK.
