Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i parked next to a 996 the other day and there was a small amount of anti freeze under his car and a smell like it was going to over heat or something.this happened to my boxster s ,but it was coming off lease and was not under warranty,so i never had it looked at. is this a major problem that contributes to engine failure? can someone please(in dummy terms)explain this and is there any relation to this and rms.. is it that risky to buy a 996 without warranty?i have a 3.2...it is like a tank.little things have gone but so far nothing to be concered about. thanks,j

POST 2Original post

In general if I see this in a car, especially where there is a smell involve, the first thing I look at apart from the level obviously is the heater core. That's the small radiator like / finned thing that is used to radiate heat into a flow of air for the heater. That's what I would check first. They do fail, and do create a right stink when they do. Keith

POST 3Original post

What you "witnessed" is probably the same problem many other 996s have (mine included). The coolant tank on the early models (not sure years) had a problem with cracking. I was able to buy a replacement for under $200. The leak drips on the left exhaust system. Search the 996 forum and you will see other posts about this. -Darren

POST 5Original post

Happened to me too. Coolant tank cracked and had to be replaced. $200 for parts plus installation to repair so about $340 from my friendly local independant P-shop. But I am told it can cause further damage if you don't get them checked out and let it go. With mine the engine temp light kept flashing on and off...despite me adding coolant.
