Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In short: My 996 (1998) has an intermittent start issue. It has the no crank no start issue and piwisIII shows: DME faultcode 39: Anit-drive-off feature (no signal) Alarm faultcode 21: W line (DME immobilizer), open circuit Alarm faultcode 49: k-line, short circuit to ground I am sure the car did not have any faultcode a few months ago when i put it in winter storage.. The full story: The car was in winterstorage and i went to get it 2 weeks ago. but somehow my trickle charger died and the battery went flat. I came back with a charged battery but the car did not want to start. (every thing works except the no-crank no-start) This weekend it took the trailer along to bring it to my workshop, and when i got to the car i just tried it one more time and it fired right up. i could drive it on the trailer and brought it home. Back home i fired it up and drove it off the trailer. Put the trailer back in its place and when i wanted to park the 996 on its parkingspot it didn't start anymore. Went to the workshop to get the laptop with piwisIII andyou can guess when i came to the car it just started right up but died after a few seconds with a no crank no start again. Then i scanned and saw the codes. Now it seems like the car wil start after i let it sit for a few minutes but not always.Just now it took an hour before it wanted to start again. I tried a lot of things, but the most related things: -took out the immobilizer, no water damaged, it still looks like new -measured the wiring, all seems to be ok -bridged the start-lock relay, starter will engage but no start (i guess because the immobilizer is cutting off fuel or ignition) -wiggling around with the connector doesn't do anything, although i had the feeling that when i wiggle the key it has more change to start (maybe the code reader ring? but it doesn't have a 100% success rate) I think I know the answer already but before i take out the ecu and immobilizer to ship it to a ecu doctor i would like to know if i might be overlooking something. Can i for example easily see (with piwis) if the key is beeing read and the immobilizer is beeing turned on or off. The main issue i saw is that when i read the alarm with piwis, when i turn the key to start is disconnects piwis.

POST 2Original post

Replace the battery with new and completely eliminate that source of headache. Weak battery can cause all sorts of weird symptoms that can drive you mad. Easy enough to swap out, especially if you have another known good unit on hand.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry that is what i meant with coming back with a charged battery. I put a new fully loaded battery in. I was just looking more at the problem and i noticed 2 things: 1. in piwisIII it shows the status of the immobilizer as: not active. Does this mean it is 'not blocking the start' or does this mean 'it is not releasing the car to start' it sounds like ' it is not actively immobilizing" so it should start? 2. After going through the diagrams i do notice k and w line are next to each other on the plug. since i have an error on both, maybe they are touching each other somewhere. I have been googling my issue and faultcodes and i found a few people having the exact same issue. sadly no-one posted their solution.

POST 4Original post

If you havent already done so, I would recommend replacing your ignition switch. The Audi switch is a decent one.
