It was the orginal windshield so I was happy to have a clearer view with the new one.

caveat: i think my windshield proctector was a 3m clear bra installed by the previous owner, but i'm not 100% sure.

She just had to replace her windshield after fixing 4 chips (all within a year and repaired) then a new one that finally put a crack across the windshield.

I don't believe your ws can be properly repaired becasue of the striations coming from the impact point.

I had it replaced a few months ago so I'll be going through that process again soon.

I'll check with my insurance agent on the differences between comp/collision and see if it is worth my while to make a change to my policy so I can avoid these types of out-of-pocket expenses in the future.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had to replace my windshield this past summer due to a slight mistake I made when replacing my wipers.
Well yesterday on the drive home I'm behind one of those "wide load" trucks hauling road building equipment. I think to myself, "I should probably pass him so I can avoid getting hit with debris." Just as I think that BAM my car get's hit and the windshield cracks right where the A-pillar and glass connect.
I'm almost certain this cannot be repaired. Anyone think otherwise?
Unfortunately I have a $500 deductible so looks like the wallet will be a little lighter soon.
Bummer. When it's time to renew, check insurance companies (like Farmer's) that offer free glass replacement. Whenever this happens to me I don't say "Damn", I say "Cool...I get a brand new windshield". Window repair is complimentary as well but they let you decide. They have always been OEM on all my cars too.
Yeah, Florida has a replace/repair policy in force, so you are covered as long as you are insured. Not sure if that can be fixed, but you may see if Safelight can do something with it, I've heard good things about them (no relation/affiliation, etc.)
DS
The general rule is if its smaller than a dollar bill it can be fixed. After that it may not spread but it will still look like crap. I would get a new windshield.
Should have gotten the license plate number of the truck and or any contact information on the truck and contacted them. I had that happen a number of years ago as the truck was throwing rocks out of the back. I also took a picture of the back of the truck from my car.
I inquired about payment or going to small claims court. I told them either or as they were responsible. They reimbursed me for a new windshield.
Living in the mountains, windshield replacement is almost an annual occurrence for me. I have the $0 deductible windshield policy. All four of our cars received a new windshield in 2012. The Cayenne actually had two!
Fernando,
I don't believe your ws can be properly repaired becasue of the striations coming from the impact point. There is probably no way to stop those; they will continue outward into your field of vision. But, some of the repair kit offerings state that repairs of cracks up to 8" are possible. The only risk would be the purchase price of $10-$20 and half hour of your time. GL!
I dont think he was clear about if it came off the load or from the highway. Either way he gets a nice new clear windshield. PS, stop driving your car so much and this wont happen.
What mistake did you make with the wipers?
I'm about to replace my wipers too and I have a new windshield that just got replaced.
A couple months ago I got a similar injury to my windshield.
Similar scenario. Something flew off the truck in front of me.
I tried local repair and it improved it, but the damage clearly remained.
So I finally caved in and replaced my windshield.
BTW, comprehensive insurance is WAY cheaper than collision insurance. I would consider lowering your comprehensive insurance deductible to 100 or less so it covers these unavoidable problems in the future.
I was actually surprised when I found that my policy doesn't even cover windshield repair. It would still have to come out of my deductible payment.
This is actually a Safelite windshield! I had it replaced a few months ago so I'll be going through that process again soon.
I took a closer look at it and it's pretty bad. Much bigger than a dollar. I'll ask the techs to look at it but I'm sure this is going to need replacement.
I considered doing that for a split second but just proceeded thinking it would be more hassle than it's worth. Maybe I should have reconsidered?
That's a Colorado thing. If your windshield can make it past one year that's great! When I lived there it seemed 25% of the cars on the road at any given time had a crack in their windshield.
That's something I may consider - never thought of it for a windshield though. Does it distort the vision of the driver? Also is it easily scratched with debris?
Yeah I'm not sure if it was just kicked up by the truck or actually came off the equipment. It feels as if it was hit by one of the truck tires because it came at me with quite a bit of velocity. I was going around 65 MPH and it did a pretty good bit of damage to the car. And yeah, you're right - if I didn't drive it I wouldn't be dealing with this now.
Well let's put it this way...When you remove the wiper from the arm, make sure you have a rag down in the spot where the wiper comes down on the window!
I let the arm slip and in a split second it hit the window and cracked it! I felt like an idiot because it was a self-inflicted wound.
I'll check with my insurance agent on the differences between comp/collision and see if it is worth my while to make a change to my policy so I can avoid these types of out-of-pocket expenses in the future.
Yeah, you're in good company. I did the same damn thing 2 months ago. The springs are strong in this one (the 996 wiper arm), don't bump the arm once you have removed the blade. It was the orginal windshield so I was happy to have a clearer view with the new one.
@fpena944,
Yes you can scratch the film, but I have had it for 4 months and have done 2 rallies, 2 autoX, and a full track day of 8x 30 minute runs...NO cracks, NO pits, NO scratches on the film! There is a polish that you need to use with ClearPlex about once a week to keep the film "slick." You put this polish on the film and windshield wipers. This will prevent the scratching.
There is NO other product out there that offers this level of protection AND clarity! ClearPlex is now also made for electronic devices because of its clarity for the Retina Display devices and it's low viscosity (more slippery than glass!)
EASY DIY! Let me know if you need one!
I've been thinking about getting this, hate having to pay $1,000 plus per windshield to replace far too often.
How is the hazing at night? Are there any halos?
Precision, I'm considering the Clearplex for my car and my wife's FJ Cruiser. Boy, talk about a chip magnet. She just had to replace her windshield after fixing 4 chips (all within a year and repaired) then a new one that finally put a crack across the windshield. $750 and three hours to replace that one and poor me with a $500 deductible. My 996 windshield got a chip within the first week of owning it. Unfortunately she won't let me practice on her FJ so that means practice would be on mine. How difficult is the application for someone inexperienced?
caveat: i think my windshield proctector was a 3m clear bra installed by the previous owner, but i'm not 100% sure.
On my windshield protector, I had no hazing or halos at night.
I scratched my windshield proctector using the gas station windshield blade "dryer" portion of the cleaner that required some pressure. At that time, the proctector was not waxed. The wipers never scratched it, but I did routinely wax the windshield protector thereafter. My snow brush also never scratched it, but I never used an ice scraper for fear of damaging it.
I've applied 3m clear bra before as a newbie. It is easy on surfaces like the windshield and hood which have relatively few curves.
I was tired of the scratches on it and eventually removed my windshield protector. Several months later a piece from a semi truck hit my windshield and I had to replace my windshield. Crappy timing.
If I had to do it over again, I would get a windshield protector as long as I was ready to wax it routinely and avoid hard pressure like an ice scraper or gas station blade dryer.
Install is relatively easy. The precut kits are designed to be a DIY project. The tools and instructions are included. Shipment comes directly from ClearPlex. We do make an FJ kit but it is not on the website. I can order it directly from ClearPlex with a 10% discount if you'd like one. You can email me directly at
