Suggestion

I just added the cost of all the DIY work I have done on my 99 996 including the cost of a OTC racing jack and 2 stands, ie two oil and filter changes, brake fluid changed, brake pads and bleeding done, plus sensors, cabin polin filter, air filter, serpentine belt, spark plugs and new tubes, changed full cooling system and I still can't get anywhere near to $800.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Need a bit of help guys. I am selling my car and subject to some negotiation it is sold. I had the 30K service done a while back and the PPI dealer is asking why the plugs weren't changed. Talked to my dealer who said because they dont get done til 60K. He printed off the service manual page which clearly says only up to model year 2000 change the plugs, otherwise its 60K. PPI dealer is arguing thats not correct. Renntech lists a change of plugs at 30K. Who is correct?

POST 2Original post

in the end the buyer is correct..... who cares what either says, I am sure its only a few $$$ and will make the buyer finish the deal, I would just ask them what they want in lue of having not been changed at the 30k service and finish the deal, they may just split the cost or whatever, its not like you are going to run it thru the shop and have it done for the buyer.... let them worry about it just my opinion OH and if they are unreasonable.... tell em find another car.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

you mean he is technically correct they should have been done or that i should just agree and move on? Attached what my dealer gave me;

POST 4Original post

technically you are correct and you can show them this picture/book. but I wouldnt loose a deal over it, I would show them why it was done the way it was and ask them, what do you want to do about it... until you know how big of a deal it is for the buyer you cannot make a decision - in other words if you show them and they say "We want $5k off the price" you can tell them to pound sand, however if they say "we want $250 off for the cost of plugs", that might be something you are willing to move on - show them, and ask,.... put the ball in thier court again this is just me

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wanted to be clear on my 'technically correct' position. Also p****d that the other P dealer is talking BS by telling him he needs to have an $1850 service performed as the plugs were not done. Not to mention the inflated prices they put in the PPI was nuts.......for example $70 to install a door courtesy light bulb!!! The guy is understandably shocked at what the dealer is telling them....unfortunately its either plain wrong or over inflated nonsense......now we are in a 'my dealer says' discussion. We will work it through. Thanks

POST 6Original post

hmmm- that does suck - $2k is not small potatos... are you in contact with the buyer? I would talk to him in person and just be calm as can be... say, you know $1800 sounds a little high and we have seen large swings in prices between dealers. Since you know what this dealer is "saying" is wrong, how about calling a couple places and just asking what they would charge for that same service. Its not that I dont trust thme, but it just seems a little high to me..... Bastards!!

POST 7Original post

The manual says 60,000 miles or four years for MY2003.

POST 8Original post

The checkered flag decal on your Porsche looks great! Do you know where I can get these? Did you install yourself? Thanks for the info.

POST 9Original post

Thanks! I bought them from: http://www.porschestripes.com/index.html Fairly easy to install. He posted a DIY on the site. However, you need to ensure NO water gets on the back surface of the decal during the install. He mentioned this but did not emphasize it well. This surface is removed when you install the decal, but if it gets wet, it will stick to the adhesive.

POST 10Original post

The guy is being cheap to get more off the price. Try reminding him who is in a better position to deal. Is it the owner of the 911 or the guy being cheap. The other shop isn't being nice to the buyer also since that shop knows its got him bringing the car to them if he buys it.

POST 11Original post

The Indy that works on my car did a 30K service for me last month. He said that he normally changes the plugs every 30K because it's not such a big deal, and for the small dollars, why not have solid plugs in every 30K. For point of reference, the major 30K service cost me $800. That's including an oil change and filter, air filter, spark plugs, cabin pollen filter, flush and bleed brake fluid, full inspection, and oh yes - 6 spark plugs. For your buyer to say that the service is $1,800 - tell him that he should find another shop to service the car. First of all, his request for the discount in that amount is unwarranted, and second of all, he should find someone more reasonable to spend his hard earned dollars with. If he insists on the discount, tell him to find another seller. larry

POST 12Original post

I just added the cost of all the DIY work I have done on my 99 996 including the cost of a OTC racing jack and 2 stands, ie two oil and filter changes, brake fluid changed, brake pads and bleeding done, plus sensors, cabin polin filter, air filter, serpentine belt, spark plugs and new tubes, changed full cooling system and I still can't get anywhere near to $800. So I think you are being overcharged on the full service by at least $1000.. the effing so and so's... At those crazy prices we are forced into doing our own work. One consolation is:- we know that the work has been done correctly.

POST 13Original post

16 month old topic. I'm guessing the situation has been solved.

POST 14Original post

I just had my 60k done at 58k. I have a tune and was getting some misfires under load in 4th. I had new plugs, 997 coil packs, and Pre cat O2 sensors replaced. All I can say is wow! It wasn't cheap, but it is like a new car. It ran fine before, but was a little raw. I just thought that was normal. the smoothness these replacements induced is amazing. Now I need a new exhaust to get the rawness back. Its too smooth. LOL

POST 15Original post

I change my spark plugs after every 2 oil changes.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 9523229

Spark plugs and coils were not done by the dealer at my 30k. Doing my 60k now. Apparently I need two new coil packs. Was about to get the 996 coil packs until your post. Did you get Beru 997 coils or Bosche coils?

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 9523533

Bosche. You can hardly get the 996 TT coild packs anymore. I had all mine done, but once you get in there, you might as well not do it again. The result was definitely worth it.

POST 19Original post

SSST, What did it cost in Houston? I'm getting very close in CT. I understand if you'd rather not say. Matt

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 8176288

My info based on a printout of the most current service interval/mileage is your car is not due to have its plugs changed until 60K miles. I posted a PDF of this document on the 996 Turbo forum, under a thread "I've been a bad boy...". The document I was told by the tech who called it up from his computer comes from a private (dealer only) web site. If you are getting any static from the PPI dealer have it show you the documentation upon which it bases its claim the plugs are due to be changed at 30K miles. IIRC only the 996 Turbo and 2000 an early Boxsters and 911s get their plugs changed every 30K miles. But consult the PDF I mentioned above. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 9524070

I think the turbo coil packs are quite a bit more expensive than the NA coil packs. They were 280 ea. plus labor. Also the labor on a turbo is more because of all the extra stuff to work around.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 9523566

Why not? I like new shiny stuff. Especially stuff that make the car run smoother.

POST 23Original post

I would change the plugs at 4 years or 30k ... only $250 at a good indie

POST 24Original post

FWIW-Just had the major 60K done (except I had already replaced my air and pollen filters, and serpentine belt) at my local P-car dealer. Cost = $1650. A local indy shop had quoted me $1300. The original plugs and all six spark plug tubes were also replaced as one tube was leaking. (The indy price did not include replacing the tubes.) And yes, it seems to have made a difference in re. engine smoothness, clutch action, etc. relinuca

POST 25Original post

FWIW - Attached Porsche Maintenance Interval sheet dated 2010 says 2001-2005 Carrera plugs should be changed every 48,000 or 4 years.

POST 26Original post

If I'm reading this right, my 2k miles per year 2004 Carerra does not need annual maintenance? Only thru MY2003 it says... My oil has 1.1k on it, but 14mos... now that I bought it I will be doing 3-5k per year in mileage... just debating if I really need to change it or just wait till end of season and the 2yr mark... According to this schedule, I can...

POST 27Original post

I would change the oil every year reguardless of miles.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 9528195

yep - annually is cheap insurance - and maybe even more so if car is not driven much or only short distances. You could always do blackstone oil analysis for $25 to see how the oil looks - and based on that might want to stretch it to two years. My oil looked good at 1 year ~5K - but changed it myself anyway.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
