I decided I didn't want to worry about it, so I simply replaced the IMS with the LN model.

Just this week I got renewed interest on the car where I'm thinking of making an offer.

They also have access to every single M96 engine that was ever replaced under warranty, so presumably they understood the problem very well indeed by the time 2004 arrived.

Suggestion
It's a great way to make an easy $ and then come back with a list on wear items that need will need to be done, normally they recommend wear items need replacing when they still have thousands of miles left on them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello mates I'm looking at purchasing 2000 996 3.6L that was converted to a race car. Im familiar with the Ims issue and I'm wondering if it applies to the 3.4 and 3.6? Is there any thing I can do as far as ppi to protect myself or am I just rolling the dice. Car has 75000 miles and was a former Koni challenge car. Very sweet set up. All of your suggestions are appreciated.
Well let's start with this. You say your car is a model year 2000 and it has the 3.6 liter motor.
Unless it already has a new (none stock) motor one of those statements is incorrect. The 2000 996 all have 3.4 motors.
Correct it has a none stock motor. If I recall correctly when I first spoke to the seller a couple of months ago he did mention that it got a 3.6 motor 2 years ago. He gave me a lot of details about which honestly I don't remember. Just this week I got renewed interest on the car where I'm thinking of making an offer. I'm somewhat concered as i would hate to need to replace a motor anytime soon. Any recommendations? What year did the 3.6 come out. Sorry I've only owned 997s and currently have a 2011 rs.
2008 turbo cab from may of 2010 for one year but then quickly got the track bug and replaced it with the rs which I have had for the year since then since and is now for sale and to be replaced by a club race car. The 996. I'll post an eBay link. But back to my question, are there any suggestions?
PPI won't tell you crap. It's for people who don't know a thing about cars and can't walk around the car and tell if it need brake pads or not.
I know there are original 3.4's that have dropped in 3.6's and even 3.8 X51 engines.
All of them have a IMS and all of them can and have let go. It's a bearing. Considering that it is a bearing, the cars that sit around and don't get used daily seem to wear before cars that are driven daily.
Anyways the IMS is not the weakest link in these cars, being a race car I'd worry more about cylinder ovaling, scoring, piston slap and worn valve guides.
I know cars - all of them inside and out. I'm not sure what your version of an inspection is, but a thorough pro inspection and testing is critical. Anyway thank you for your comments.
Ok, if it is non-stock and was installed as a race motor what mods does it have? Does it have the LN Engineering IMS bearing or any of the other LN ungrades?
The IMS issue (as well as other problems) can occur on any 3.4, 3.6, or even 3.8 in the 996 and 997's before Porsche introduced the new DI motors. That being said there are upgrades and even an early warning system (IMS Guardian) that can help safeguard your car.
Depending on hours there is a lot more you should do than lift it up. At least lab test oil for contaminants and foreign body. Now i see why I never got into face book. Too much back and forth not enough answers. Thanks anyway.
Think how much it costs 1.5h labour, they do not test the oil, no compression test, no dyno, no pulling the plugs and borescoping. Search for PPI. It a list of 100 things they check most of them done from the ODB2 connection, quick test drive. It's a great way to make an easy $ and then come back with a list on wear items that need will need to be done, normally they recommend wear items need replacing when they still have thousands of miles left on them. Why? to make a few more $.
They do not determine predictability of an IMS failure or a complete engine failure and with my Caynene TT can't even detect a catastrophic coolant pipe failure.
You have to understand how much this issue gets beat to death on this forum to understand why you are getting a bit of the runaround. There are endless threads on the topic, they go on forever and spin in circles.
I have the Guardian on mine.
This **** is seriously getting old.
Big Al, you know everything I quoted you stating above plus you are a PCA Instructor(I have no proof of this) yet somehow you do not know how to use the search function on RL.
This topic has been beaten to death, no really it has. According to the info. here on RL the 3.6 is at least as prone to the I#$% explosion as the 3.4L.(IMHO, you have ALMOST the same chance of being struck by lightning as having your I%^& detonate) Yet you start this thread by asking if the 3.6s suffer from #$^&*#@#&&&.
Mederators, quick question. Could you please HIGHLIGHT AND UNDERLINE the Admin. suggestion, at the top of the thread, to do a search before asking BS I$%^ questons!?!?!?
Wow. Dream carerra you need to grow up. I'm new to RL, and no I don't know how to research. But will figure it out. Thank you for the warm welcome. And if you don't like the thread then dont effin reply loser. Ray and the few other thanks. I'll be on 6 speed where the egoes are more under control.
Dream carerra, one more thing. I didn't know i needed to prove to you that I was a Pca instructor. But feel free to pm me and I'll give u my full name so that you can call the national office and find out for yourself. You got issues man.

Hi big al. This is the info I gathered up before I bought my 02 996 with 105K on the clock. I bought the car, 4 months later, when the clutch started to slip, I replaced it along with the IMS bearing fro LN. The bearing that came out of my car looked pretty darn good fot 105K. I don't think it would have failed over the next 50k but who could say. It's a daily driver for me and was for the PO. By the way, there is an encyclopedia of info on this site about this item with viewpoints in all directions. My advice...do the research, buy the car and change the bearing the next time you have access to it. I was told by three local techs that these cars are time bombs due to the IMS. We all have to come to our own conclusions.
I avoid participating in these threads, but I watch them. Most regular users do, too.
Posting a thread titled "996 IMS issue" is kinda like sending an email to your mechanic titled "My Car". It just gets a little frustrating and old.
Anyway, ignore the backlash. Click on Search in the banner and then click on Advanced Search. There is a ton of info here.
Then, please post more specifics about the car in question. One day, I might be looking for a track dedicated car and it's really useful to draw out opinions from the users here. That's why we're all here.
Thank you mark. Gentlemen I had no idea this thread would have cause this kind of insanity. No need for anymore posts I'll figure it out from here. Be well. Thanks again.
+1000.. What wrong with you? This is a car forum. You don't want to participate fine but please just STFU. It's jerks like you that give credence to the porcupine/Porsche driver jokes. Go take a dump or jerk off but please...
One more thing you should be aware of is that 3.6 litre motors manufacured, or remanufactured after 2004 are likely to have the M97 upgraded IMS bearing.
In that case - the IMS bearing can not be extracted from the outside of the engine ie when the clutch is being redone. That's the "bad" news. The good news is that this was Porsche's answer to the bearing failure issue, and despite what you may be led to believe, the guys at Porsche *do* know how to design and engineer engine components. They also have access to every single M96 engine that was ever replaced under warranty, so presumably they understood the problem very well indeed by the time 2004 arrived.
As it happens, my 2002 Carrera has a reman engine installed in 2005. The clutch just failed, and I was planing to replace the IMSB but when I removed the flywheel I discovered that mine is a M97 upgraded engine.
The engine has 120K kilometres on it now (the rest of the car 190K) I won't have any trouble sleeping.
As far as too many IMSB threads goes - doing a search would be daunting at this point. You're likely to get 100's of threads. The opinions will range from ignore the issue to people afraid to drive their cars for anything more than a few hours.
Two local friends of mine have lost motors in the last few years - but at the same time I sure see an awful lot of Boxsters and Carreras on the street.
The odds are well in your favour.
This thread is embarrassing. Just because someone does not conform their questions to your specifics is no need to be rude, accusatory, or just plain stupid. The original post asked a fairly legitimate question and a few of you jerks just pissed all over the guy. Why? Do you feel better now? Are you taller or perhaps better looking now that you have bested a lesser mortal than yourself?
Mediator - I started this thread yesterday and it really isn't going anywhere. I got the information I needed from a few good guys. I suggest removing it now. Thanks. I was told by a few people rennlist is where the racers are and the place to get some good insight. I have to say I've posted a ton on 6speed and never encoutered such nonsense. Hopefully one day we'll meet in person and we'll see just how tough some of you really are; then I'll finish you off on the track. Good day.
Why do you want to switch from the RS? I'm not the greatest driver, but I can hold my. My car has all of the upgrades except for brakes. A well driven RS will spank me pretty hard.
Thank you pete I needed that. Tusler, I'm getting rid of the RS since I really dont drive it anymore. I think an rs that only sees the street is a waste . For the occasional DE's it was awesome. But now I want to start club racing and that would mean converting the car which doesnt make sense since a 997 Cup car would cost less. I'm just starting to race and I think something a little less extreme and without all that electronic assistance will help when making the move to a cup in a few years. An RS with everything shut off (which is how I drive it) still allows the driver to go a lot faster around the track than his abilities would normally allow for. I'm inspecting a so cal converted 996 race car on Monday. If all goes well I'll be racing it shortly.
HAHA Relax you may live longer.
I was in no way questioning your position as a PCA instructor, I was simple pointing out that I was quoting you and didn't want my comment to be taken as fact.
Personally, I couldn't care less if you're an instructor or not so no need to PM me your credentials.
And yes, I certainly do have issues, most of us do...
And BTW, if you 6-Speed you certainly know the search function exists so I call BS on this point...Anyway, I'm off to the 993 board to ask if anyone there knows about the top-end rebuild issue.
WOW, very classy and mature, especially coming from the person who told me to "grow up" not to mention called me a "loser". I apologize if my comments hurt your delicate feelings.
You sound like just the instructor/coach I've been looking for. I wasn't aware PCA acknowledged the ol' single digit salute as an official signal.
Easy Jumper...
Big Al will knock you out and take your lunch money. Then to add insult to injury, he'll beat your *** on the track also.
And I've got the "issues". LOL
For what it's worth Big Al - I had a PPI done by my trusted mechanic on a used 2004 cab. I decided I didn't want to worry about it, so I simply replaced the IMS with the LN model. The IMS that came out was in fair shape, couldn't really see anything wrong with it.
Don't worry about the flaming replies here. Everyone's got a right to post whatever they want - just don't take any of it to heart. We should all be here because we are fanatically interested in our P-cars. Egos and insecurities should be checked at the door.
Good luck with the track car and keep us posted on it. I'm not a tracker, but I imagine I will be eventually.
Rob
P.S. - Moderator, I suggest you leave this thread up as a model of how NOT to behave.
The racers are on Rennlist, just not for the most part on this part of Rennlist. Stop by on the Racing forum of RL, and you'll find a little less nonsense. Still some, but not as much.
So Now Big Al.... Don't you think my answer was the best answer for you?...I knew as soon as you asked where this would lead.... right onto the bloody dreaded bearing again... I should have said... Either buy it or don't buy it. Thats up to you. We can't answer your question. Mine was a blunt answer but the best one so far.
Hey Dreamcarrera when are we meeting up for a meal at the smorgasburg? Should I invite Big Al hehe.. No I don't think that would be the best of ideas. It would only turn into a food fight haha.. Then he would burn you off along the 322 to add insult to injury lol. So drop me a message when you are ready. ..
