These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The Rennlist home page effectively categorizes different models Porsche has sold, making it easy for forum users to find the model(s) they're most interested in. However, the home page is inconsistent in that it refers to some cars by their model as marketed (e.g., 356 or 968) and others by their internal designation (e.g., 996 or 987). Among other things, the designation "911" in the water cooled section has been completely subordinated to internal designation numbers. I propose that the home page be made consistent by referencing the model number/name used by Porsche in marketing their cars. Therefore, designations like 987, 993, 964, 996, etc. would be discontinued. In their place, here are some examples to illustrate how this proposal could be implemented: "1995-98 911" be used in place of "993" "1999-2004 911" be used in place of "996" "2005-current 911" be used in place of "997" "1997-2004 Boxster" be used in place of 986 I never refer to my 911 as a 996. To me, it's a '99 911. I consider my car to be a direct descendent of the 911 introduced in 1963. The 911 is a great name...I thank Porsche for continuing to use it as the model designation for over 40 years.

POST 2Original post

I like the use of the internal designation numbers.

POST 6Original post

I like the internal designations as it makes it easier. Those that don't know what year = what internal designation need to ramp up their knowledge base imo.

POST 7Original post

when I bought mine I thought it was a special edition since the old owner called it a 996 (not just a plain ole 911)

POST 8Original post

Internal designations are the best way to distinguish models. I vote for leaving it as is.

POST 9Original post

The check IB wrote to John D, I think in the memo section noted: "its fine jus teh way it is"

POST 10Original post

Leave it as is. The only people that don't know about 996s or 997s etc. are those who aren't members of this forum.

POST 12Original post

I think we need to true to the original. Surely the founding fathers would want it this way!

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 7392943

With all due respect I think you are in the minority among Porsche enthusiasts and owners, the type numbers are widely used.

POST 14Original post

It's very simple....this is an ENTHUSIASTS forum. And ENTHUSIASTS refer to their individual model by the internal designation.

POST 16Original post

To clarify, I meant the original Rennlist, with the internal designations. But then again, I'm a newb, what do I know about original?

POST 17Original post

I think we should have forums segerated by the exterior color of the car. That way if you are interested in white, you can go to the white forum. No confusing numbers, no separation of the variants (i.e. C2, C4, Targa ,Turbo, GT2/3), just colors!

POST 18Original post

And where would Honda owners go?

POST 22Original post

I vote leave it the way it is..... i like saying 996, besides its at the beg of the part numbers. "996" is way easier than saying "my 911 that was made in two thousand one"

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 7394298

I drive a Carrera. I never refer to it as a 911 and to Porsche enthusiasts I refer to it as a 996.

If depends, what color are the GT2 parts?

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 7394280

I may be dumb (having bought a Honda) but I am not color blind. Of course, I would frequent the "White" Forum.

POST 27Original post

Amazing that both of you rapidly came out to respond when called - were your ears burning?

POST 28Original post

Yeah, my radar goes off with two words....... "Honda" and....... "Tim???" (when some damn Newbie hasn't posted pics)!

POST 29Original post

"GT2" seems to make my ears burn like hell anyone says Yellow, is gonna get it

POST 30Original post

This won't happen here. There's no value in making things more complicated than they already are.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 7394275

Tim, does that mean RL has to put up a Honda Accord forum for your car? Or would we have to designate it the "Honda 2007-2009" forum?

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 7394336

Vote? Hey, this ain't a democracy!

POST 37Original post

Did I miss voting? I move that if we get a single post agreeing with the OP, we do it.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 7394781

Both! At least IB makes a final decision on how to remane our Forum titles. BTW, do you think we need a separate "color" forum for Cobweb Gray, or can we just put in with the other gray cars?

POST 39Original post

So if we use internal numbers around here - how come the Boxster set are not listed under 986? And the Cayenne, Cayman and Panamera set have 'names' not internal project numbers. Are these people too slow to figure out where to go and have to be told their 'public' names instead.?

POST 40Original post

Actually there is a 986 forum, it's called Boxster (986) not just 986. As far as the Pepper and Croc, they really aren't the same naming lexicon that people use for the rest. If you think about it, it makes sense. Enthusiasts refer to a 99-04 Carrera as a 996 but refer to ANY croc or pepper by their name plate.

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 7395877

I just knew we kept you around for something.

POST 42Original post

Just go to any enthusiast forums and it's the same, The BMW guys have all the E36..E39..blah blah, Audi has B5, B6 C6..etc.... Corvette had the C1-C6 generations .... you get the idea I know, I'm preaching to the choir here

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 7395957

Glad I was good for something around here. Not sure the Pepper and Croc guys would agree

POST 44Original post

Keep it as is, mine's a "996 Carrera" if anyone ever asks...
