Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I then checked my other wheels and noticed that all of the other lug studs were much tighter having been put on by a reputable Porsche garage but clearly with an air gun and set higher than required.
Leading evidence: 'Check other wheels and noticed' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check calibration of our torque wrenches' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced my old TQ wrench with a new one when, after comparing to 2 friends wrenches, mine was consistently less than theirs were.

OK, dumb question, how to we check the calibration of our torque wrenches?

Picked up a nail in one of the rears on Saturday and after getting it repaired I went to re-install the wheel and decided to see if the manual specifies a torque setting for the lug studs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Picked up a nail in one of the rears on Saturday and after getting it repaired I went to re-install the wheel and decided to see if the manual specifies a torque setting for the lug studs. Sure enough the manual specifies 130nM or 95 ft.lbs.
I took out the trusty torque wrench and tightened cross pattern till they all clicked off at the right torque.
I then checked my other wheels and noticed that all of the other lug studs were much tighter having been put on by a reputable Porsche garage but clearly with an air gun and set higher than required.
Any of you guys use a torque wrench on these studs or am i being **** about it.
Pete
So.. did you loosen them all up and re-torque them?
Also consider that different TQ wrenches can give different values, just like different tire pressure gauges can tell you different pressures.
I replaced my old TQ wrench with a new one when, after comparing to 2 friends wrenches, mine was consistently less than theirs were.
It's important to always torque the wheels to prevent them from coming loose and distortion of the brake rotor/hub.
Any torque wrench except a beam style will change calibration over time. It's best to have your T/wrench recalibrated annually or more often for critical fastener tensioning. Porsche re-calibrates their clicker style torque wrenches on the assembly line twice per shift per day. I've seen clicker torque wrenches be out of calibration by 50%. Several folks with brand new high dollar T/Wrenches had them checked and they were off ~20%. They were not happy. A quality T/Wrench comes with a certificate of accuracy but most T/wrenches do not. Price does not determine the accuracy or repeatability of a T/wrench - quality and design do.
So no you're not being ****. For a threaded fastener to function properly it needs to be tensioned correctly.
always always always always always torque your porsche bolts - my indy uses a torque wrench on almost ever bolt/nut
if you track your car before you get in the gate the first thing they will do it check your wheel torque...
GO SCOLD THAT INDY GUY !!
(err at least ask him what you saw and why it looked like that? explain what you did and your concern)
In general, a split beam torque wrench will be more accurate than a spring type.
Also, you do not need to 'unwind' a split beam torque wrench after each use prior to storage like you do for a spring type.
FWIW, I've used this one for years:

And yes, over tightening is bad....and using a torque wrench to loosen lug nuts is bad as well...you need to have a breaker bar for that....or an electric impact wrench.
And then of course you will probably need 'soft sockets' if you are concerned about scratching/damaging your lugs and/or wheels...
If you're into cool toys, check out Stahlwille's torque wrenches.
They do not use a spring to set torque so supposedly don't go out of calibration as easily. Not cheap but among the best wrenches out there and none of your friends will have one!
Here are couple leads as to who does re-calibration.

There are most likely some locations in every major city across the US. I have not done this but this thread makes me think.
