Even pieces the dealer replaced are still peeling off years later.

Bought nice used wood steering wheel from turbo s and had door trim re-done by Craft Customs, also in Texas.

I just saw pics of the one in NJ for sale and it looks very clean indeed!

Recently purchased a Millennium Edition 911 (my first Porsche, yay.) and despite how great it is there are a few items I'm considering changing such as: (1) side markers from orange to smoked, (2) replacing the navigation unit with a newer double DIN unit with Bluetooth, (3) adding a performance part or two (like intake and exhaust), and eventually (4) the wheels.

Between the polished wheel finish chipping and the cracked wood, seems like these special features weren't exactly built to stand the test of time (oh the irony).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The stock chrome wheels were already painted silver when I got it. Current navi doesn't work and is hilariously archaic anyway.
General consensus is that even though these 911's were numbered special editions, they don't really add a lot of value over a regular Carrera 4.
What would you guys do?
I can't say if it will become more valuable in the future or not (nor can anyone else with certainty). However, any change that you make that can be put back to stock won't hurt/help/affect the value or collectability. Just keep all the parts you change out so you can put it back to stock in the future, if necessary. Modify as you please.
Congrats on the car, and enjoy it in good health. (post some pics).
This.
Nothing you are talking about sounds like it would be hard to revert if needed should the value ever jump.
The only worrying thing in the list is the head unit. Make sure no wiring is damaged and the factory harness is left intact.
If you are serious about trying to retain any collectibility in the future I'd suggest keeping your eye out for a cheap factory head unit and the glossy wheels (though as much as people hate them I've yet to see a set of the 18s come up for cheap that aren't already trashed). Then you can store them away ready for reinstallation or passing on to the next owner.
Unfortunately the ME is the 996 (literally and figuratively) of the LE cars. No one seems to really be interested in them for their limited run. I highly doubt that is likely to change anytime soon (e.g. 10 years or more).
I would also only modify in such a way that its completely reversible. Even though people dont appreciate the 996 as much as other 911s now, historically all 911 special editions end up going up in value.
You are far better off picking a few stocks that you think might skyrocket in value than wondering/expecting a 996ME to ever be collectable...
Mod away. But always keep the OEM parts anyway.
Resist the urge to add an aero kit, lol. As noted above, anything you bolt on should be able to be unbolted should values go up,down the road. Enjoy it!
$80k AUD is what they ask for MK2 anniversary editions here down under...
+996 on reversible mods.
On the headunit if you wanted more functionality and stock look if you have the PCM2 you can install a Dension Gateway 500BT (Dension unit with built in bluetooth connectivity).
I'd try to source original chrome rims but to each their own
Just read that yours is a millennium edition, not sure what all the options are for PCM1 (if thats what you have) but i'm fairly sure you can add in an AUX cable fairly easily.
Very interesting takes, gentlemen. I'll look in to your recommendations and keep you posted. Someone asked for pics, and I haven't taken too many yet but here's what I got.
The ME is a beautiful car. My ME has fab speed exhaust, champion wheels, HR suspension lowered to ROW and short shift kit. It feels perfect and the way it should. I love vintage nav! Don't make it all comfy like a Lexus.
I wouldn't do aero either. Car looks great with the clean lines. Porsche actually stashed a ME in their official museum as a classic.
Congrats! Enjoy!
No, the dealer said they would try to clean it but I didn't expect them to go above and beyond. I'm hoping to reduce the spot with some leather cleaner and conditioner (chemical guys).
Thanks, me too. I originally wanted the silver/black combo but after being in the cabin for a few weeks, it really is a great color combo.
Thanks.
Aero kit never interested me. It interrupts the classic shape too much and it'd be much too costly to try and match the chromaflair paint.
Simon it is beautiful, sorry if I missed it, how many miles? I've never been a fan of the M/E (probably the wheels) the color combo inside and out is very nice. Congrats, enjoy in good help.
I have a millennium....some thoughts...
If you enjoy music at all, you're gonna have to go aftermarket. The hifi system is not nearly as nice as the Bose. That's saying something.
Whatever you do, keep the paint factory. Partial resprays will never blend with this color. The color is what makes these cars special.
They look really nice with the 2002 MY 5 spokes...
Thanks. It has a little under 55k miles.
Do you have a shot of your head unit setup? Yeah, I would never mess with the factory color. Its just too unique and eye catching. As far as wheels, yeah, I'm definitely a fan of the carrera ii's and iii's on these cars. My favorite are the BBS style Sport Classic 2 as well. I've just always liked that BBS look.
That is a really nice setup. Your front bumper is the best looking aftermarket bumper I've seen. Doesn't look out of place at all and really complements the car very well. What was it like color matching to the rest of the car?
I put 15,000 miles with no problem change the oil every 6 months no negatives. Just a little funy smell from exhaust noting to bad and i have orginal paint orderd from dealer so it's matches fine.
My. Wood trim holding very well i keep in garage so i think thats helping little.
I have discovered a new feature about the car. Apparently I cannot leave it for 5 days unlocked in my garage because the battery will die. Lights on the dash come on but the car will not start. Little embarrassed as I was showing the car to my cousin.
Mine was toast when I bought it. All cracked except for shifter and e brake. Texas car. Bought nice used wood steering wheel from turbo s and had door trim re-done by Craft Customs, also in Texas. They do good work.
I'll post some picks of the head unit and interior over the weekend. Just installed new custom color matched sport seats and some other goodies. I like the sport classics too.
Your battery sounds bad to me. Mine was toast and would make it close to two weeks.
The wood accents are apparently a perennial problem in all the models. A 2000 C2 I am looking at has the full dark maple package.
I managed to get the complete service history from the dealer that sold and serviced the car to the original owner. Of all the service calls on the car, 80% were for wood trim that was cracking or peeling off the car.
Even pieces the dealer replaced are still peeling off years later. The armrest storage cover is cracked, the door pull is slowly sliding off, both the vents at each end of the dash are peeling up. Other than that, the car is a beauty.
Try removing your lamp from the frunk fixture and test it again. My frunk light was staying on and would drain a good batt in ~3 days. If that's not it, get a new batt I guess.
The light should have gone out in 2 hours or so. Both 996 and 997 have a power management feature that:
If the ignition key is removed, loads which are
switched on or in standby (e.g. power windows,
luggage compartment lighting, interior light,
radio) are automatically switched off after approximately
2 hours.
Not sure why your light didn't go out. I agree that new battery is needed by OP.
The
battery was from 2011 so I think its time was just up. Took it to Autozone to be tested and sure enough, it was very dead. Purchased a new Duralast Platinum and installed it. The last owner didn't utilize the vent tube, so neither did I.
On another topic, my tax bill is higher that expected this year so that has put my mods on hold for now. I have the side markers on order so I got that going for me, which is nice.
Wow, if that's the case, my wood is in pretty good shape with just a handful of cracks on the top and bottom portions. Between the polished wheel finish chipping and the cracked wood, seems like these special features weren't exactly built to stand the test of time (oh the irony).
Here's a YT vid of a ME for sale in decent shape with pieces of the wood straight up missing on the steering wheel.

Thanks for posting that video!
Check out the pics in this Millenium Edition sales ad. They did a good job of catching the greenish side of the chromaflair paint. I'm really starting to like these cars a lot!

Link doesn't work.
Yeah, I absolutely love this car more and more everyday. Its unique amongst other 996's. I find myself often staring at it longingly. How did this gem manage to come to me? No matter. It is my own now... My precious!
Bummer.... the site must have been taken down. It was a beautiful example with pics shot under very nice lighting that brought out the greenish side exceptionally well. Looked like it should have been called Green Chromoflair instead of Violet Chromoflair. IIRC, the car had around 30k miles and a $29k pricetag.
I want one....
They're out there. Here's one in Miami with 16k miles.

I really want to know how many of the nine-hundred and eleven made are still around and where they're located.
To me, any kind of Special or Limited Edition of a car always holds a little more regard. I can appreciate that they're special and a little more exclusive. Still, I don't see a whole lot of premium value added to past Anniversary 911s (1989 25th), Weissach, or other limited cars that had special appearance packages.
The 3.2 Clubsport, 964 RS 3.8, Carrera 4 Lightweight and other examples have more value mostly because of performance enhancements.
I've talked before about the collector car market- largely, I find myself returning musclecars back to as close to stock as possible. In the current market, these are the best investments. I agree with all those who say keep any original parts you change!
Thanks for looking out, Bill. Do you know the miles/price of the Cali car? I just saw pics of the one in NJ for sale and it looks very clean indeed!
I am going to look at one in person on Friday. I've been talking to the seller for a while and have been told it's mine pending PPI on Friday morning. It's been tentatively pulled from the market and I just secured time off from work to finalize the deal. Taking oil and filter along with me...
