Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I've been lurking here for a year. Just purchased a 2002 996 cab and getting to know the car, but I'm getting concerned about some funny noises it makes. - Grinding sound from left front wheel area when cornering hard to the right. - Thump sound from the back when accelerating suddenly from rest. Feels like the engine got lifted and dropped back down. Hope it's nothing serious.

POST 2Original post

Rear might be a motor mount - front could be a tie rod, drop link, bearing, tire rub, other Where are you located? Maybe someone close can recommend an indy shop to take a look at it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Real far... I live in Singapore Will probably check it into the workshop then. Thanks

POST 4Original post

I'm with ivangene, I think engine mount best fits for the rear and my money would be on the front being a bearing. Robert

POST 5Original post

For an easy quick check of one thing, try moving the caliper for that side to see if it's loose.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok you got me there... would that be the brake caliper? I've no experience working on a car...pardon my ignorance. Do I just try to rock the brake housing with my fingers?

POST 7Original post

neither sound to bad. The thump sound like mounts??? the front end, Is it a c4 or c2? Oh by the way, a thumping sound has been heard right before IMSB failure.... (JOKE JOKE JOKE) in poor taste

POST 8Original post

So....as funny noises go, they weren't leaving you rolling on the floor. Hope they turn out to be only a minor chuckle.

POST 9Original post

OK - you need to have it looked at...I dont think you are going to find anything without some amouont of diagnostic ability.... take it to the shop (not dealer) and have them do a propper inspection. If you are not the type of guy with tools and mechanical background, recognize what is the "right" thing to do.... if you want to learn more about your car, start slowly with basic maintenance items like an oil change, air/cabin filters and maybe removing wheels to clean your wheel wells. Dont start by trying to diagnos motor mounts and a random clunk... sorry, just my opinion based on the comments

Fair enough, good call i think. Defiantly needs to be properly diagnosed.

Yes the caliper thingy. The part that holds the pistons that press the pads into the rotor. Some times if the thing is loose you can get noises from it moving around. I imagine cornering hard to the right is putting tension on the brake hose. A little extra tension if the caliper is loose is going to have the extra tension apply slight braking and cause the caliper to slam as far as the slack allows. Simplist check to eliminate loose caliper. You can try parking the car with the wheel turned far enough to the left so that you can see if the tire is rubbing the wheel well. ANother place to check is the lip of the wheel well where the tire might be rubbing from the car leaning down onto you tire. In extreme cases you can see abrassion or cuts on the tire. Or you can see burned rubber on the lip or deformed body work from the tire snagging the rim of the wheel well. This is the second easiest check. I'd also try parking the car in a tight turn to the right and see if there might be any problems with the brake line. Good luck finding what ever the abnormal stuff is. We all hate that kind of thing. Also I'd bet the thumping is a motor mount.

No need to apologise there. I was just curious. Wouldn't try to do anything myself... DIY on cars is not a common thing here in Singapore... may have something to do with cars costing triple that in the US. Will post an update with the outcome.

Hey Ed -- are those two aliens trying to smile at you from inside your car? Crap---one's trying to drive it and can barely see over the steering wheel!!
