I continued to see traces of oil in the coolant for quite some time, but changed the coolant every two to three years ( by the way I run Peak 50/50 coolant after flushing out the Porsche OEM coolant, there is no reason to pay for the Porsche OEM or G12 coolant).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Need feedback. I have coolant in my oil, but the coolant looks like it is good. Doesn't appear cloudy or milky. Replacing engine with a used one. I wanted to know IF I discover traces of oil in the coolant, do I HAVE to replace all the lines, and if so, WHY? Can I just flush them and the radiators/heater core? if so? How big of a job is it to replace them and can I do it myself, if the engine is already out? Welcome all feedback and advice.

POST 2Original post

oil in the cooling system can make the hoses get VERY soft and lead to them failing......it sounds like there is no issue with yours......i would still flush the system both ways and have your mechanic replace any that look iffy ,new stat and pump /belt/pulleys

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. Thanks. Has anyone ever replaced all the hoses before, and how hard was it? Like I mentioned, then engine is being replaced and all maint. Items on it will be addressed and replaced.

POST 4Original post

Ex Tanker is correct. The damage is softening that creates a burst risk. Jake and others(Search) have mentioned this issue. IIRC it depends how long/much exposure to oil there was. And I guess your risk tolerance. And how effective any cleaning may be. When in doubt..... Others may be able to suggest the best source for the hoses and Mubea clips. There are Mubea kits but check here first before you buy- they are tricky

POST 5Original post

Just sharing my experience. I had a cracked head and extensive intermix back in 2008. Not sure how long it went on but by the time I found it the oil was like a milkshake and the coolant like pudding. I fixed the cracked head and flushed the cooling system several time including having the radiators cleaned and running cloths through the pipes from the front to the back. I continued to see traces of oil in the coolant for quite some time, but changed the coolant every two to three years ( by the way I run Peak 50/50 coolant after flushing out the Porsche OEM coolant, there is no reason to pay for the Porsche OEM or G12 coolant). Sine then I have run the car 8+ years and about 50,000 mile. I have replaced 3-4 hoses in that time, that is it. And if you want to replace all the hoses be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars on the hoses and hundreds of dollars in labor, there are a hell of a lot of hoses in these cars.

Can you provide any evidence of this claim?

POST 7Original post

I'm with Turtle on this one, isn't there somewhere in the fine print that says that if you use anything but Porsche brand pink coolant, they'll come and repossess your 911, ship it back to Germany where it's melted down to raw metal for use in the manufacturing of toilets? Nothing gives the Germans more joy than pissin' on folks that break the rules.

Not really. All the Forums are flawed in the sense that eventually things turn into a pissing match about something or they take a turn and end up in left field. At that point the OP has usually not gotten an answer or other people are disinterested because the current discussion is not realavant to the original post.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 14009043

of course it turns into a pissing match about something trivial when a question has been asked dozens of times. the search feature has many threads on this Motor oil will break down the rubber of the hoses over time. Most 996s have their original coolant hoses and can be prone to bursting after contamination. Do you want to take the risk or not? 10 years ago when these were 50-60k cars no one would even think about not replacing them. now that they are 15k cars some people are like, meh clean them out and put any old coolant there itll be fine. Do you want to do it right? flush the system and change the hoses then replace with proper coolant. Do you want to do just enough to keep it running? clean it out and grab some coolant from autozone and let it ride.

POST 17Original post

If you can tear into the hose outer core with your finger nails, the hoses are bad. What kills the hoses is the intermix sitting in them for a few weeks/ months. This is why any car with intermix must be repaired immediately, with the entire system flushed with shout and scalding hot water.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not really questioning the validity of replacing them, know that I know the logic/need for it. How big of a job is it? Does it require massive removal of parts to gain access or is it easily done with the engine removed?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 14009651

It's the former, close to 30 hoses to replace. A couple thousand dollars just for the parts. Check autoatlanta for coolant hoses parts diagrams. All 3 "water cooling" diagrams http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p..._911_parts.php

POST 20Original post

When I bought my 2000 996 Porsche recommended oil changes every 15,000 miles. I don't follow that nor do,I use their $40-$50/gal coolant. I also don't use Mobil 1 since they reduced the zddp levels. And I by lots of parts that are made by the same company that makes them for Porsche, but they don't come in a package with the Porsche mane on it and cost 30%-50% less. If you do a little research and reading on types of coolant you will find that there is no magic to the Porsche coolant. http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_5/C...ntifreeze.html

POST 22Original post

Not to brag but I was also one of the first to fix their own car with an intermix/cracked head. In 2008 when this happened to my car my Indy, the Porsche dealer and Jake all said it could not be fixed. Now it is pretty common to fix cracked heads and keep the cars on the road. The repairs that Jake does are far beyond what I did and certainly better, more all inclusive. But I spent about $1,500 on parts and probably 60 hours in my driveway and 8+ years and 50,000 mile later I am still driving it so I am pretty happy.

POST 24Original post

The definitive Intermix-hose-replacement-test.No Flat 6 tool required. The Neanderthal method. Hey it works ! " If you can tear into the hose outer core with your finger nails , the hoses are bad. I think this means the oil on the inside of the hose has not just saturated the hose, it has chemically reacted with it and destroyed the mechanical integrity of the hose. The confirmation would be that the hoses 'balloon' when the coolant is hot and pressurized - if you are unwise enough to run the engine in this condition. Thank you Jake, nobody else proposed this simple, cheap tool.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone! The engine is almost about to come out. I have done the fingernail test and checked the firmness of the hoses. Luckily, nothing appears soft or problematic. However, I will replace all the "easily accessible" hoses, since a lot of them have to be disconnected anyway.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
