Suggestion · Original poster

check/replace the heat shield (between muffler and car frame), stones get in the back easely and make the metal heat shield sound exactly like a rattling muffler - a new shield from porsche is inexpensive and easy install

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dear all, It took me quite a while to skim through past threads and the learn and fail etc So here for everybody who's 996 mufflers are rattling: always follow this order of check: 1. check/replace the heat shield (between muffler and car frame), stones get in the back easely and make the metal heat shield sound exactly like a rattling muffler - a new shield from porsche is inexpensive and easy install 2. check the whole line for loose clampers 3. cut the rattling muffler open (several excellent DYI threads here) happy driving

POST 3Original post

I've been trying to track down an exhaust rattle. When I push on the cats the rattle seems to go away. I don't think my problem is heat shield related, probably a loose baffle somewhere in the exhaust system.

POST 4Original post

Fighting the terrible PSE rattle during warmup. Put on Cat bypass so the rattle must be in the PSE or Heatshield
