Then I moved to the rear of the car and installed some Fabspeed cans

Forgot to mention, when I had the bumper off I replaced the horns.

But with the onset of nice weather around here I wanted to start the season with clean radiators and fresh oil.

Before I knew it, the car was back up in the air and the container Tim recommended (thanks, by the way) was in place.

At the rate the oil came out I've no doubt there would have been a real mess to deal with if I used my old 12 quart container with the concave top and tiny opening.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No, the horns didn't work even before the work I just did.
About a year and 4400 miles ago I bought my 996. It was serviced (oil change, brake fluid flush, etc.) prior to my purchase and really didn't need anything. So I drove the car from April until November and all I really did to it was install a short throw shifter and remove the rear seats. But with the onset of nice weather around here I wanted to start the season with clean radiators and fresh oil.
They weren't as dirty as I thought they might be
I still found a cigarette butt, random nut, and a pistachio shell
Then I moved to the rear of the car and installed some Fabspeed cans
I always wanted to know what the car would sound like with bypass pipes

The video is (obviously) terrible and I'm sure most of you already know what it sounds like. Anyway, I thought it sounded great but I can see where it would get old quickly for a street car. I think the Fabspeed mufflers could stand to be a touch louder. Overall, though, I'm very happy with them.
While I had the rear wheels off I poked around a little bit and noticed the brakes are mounted radially. Again, probably not news to any of you but I thought it was cool.
So that was Thursday. On Friday I got a delivery from UPS. From years of racing and working on motorcycles I learned a while ago that any day you receive a box with "Motorsports" written somewhere on it will be a good day.

That thing is
just
big enough to hold all of the oil. I let it drain for a long time since I was installing a jet kit on the wife's bike at the same time and the thing almost overflowed. At the rate the oil came out I've no doubt there would have been a real mess to deal with if I used my old 12 quart container with the concave top and tiny opening.
I took the chance to poke around some more. The filler cap didn't have any 'goo' in it that was the topic of conversation a little while back
I was more than a little bummed to find that it would seem the RMS is leaking
It doesn't leave any oil on the garage floor, and it could be like that since I have only driven the car a couple hundred miles since it sat from November until last Tuesday, but I'm not banking on it. The underside of the engine is dirty enough to indicate this has probably been going on for a little while. Oddly, the shop that did the PPI (including leak down) didn't mention it. Oh well.
All told I enjoyed working on the car the last couple of days. Though I have only done light maintenance on it so far it seems easy to work on. I still can't believe it cost $120 to change the oil myself, but you have to pay to play, right? I'm looking forward to driving the car more this season. Next up is a Homelink module install.
Thanks a lot. Bumper removal was child's play. You can do it with two screwdrivers and if your car isn't lowered I don't think you would even need to put it up on stands. Dooo it [/Stiller]
Nice write up and pics. You accomplished quite a bit and no doubt your 911 will be much happier now. It always feels good working on the Porsche. Thanks for the input.
If you're careful you'll be fine.
I do jack my car up, as it gives extra clearance to get the bumper on and off. Additionally, it's good to get it down on a blanket and that helps protect it.
Forgot to mention, when I had the bumper off I replaced the horns. Now they only work when the car is turned off. Any idea why the horn would work when the car is turned off but not work when the car is turned on?
No, the horns didn't work even before the work I just did. Not sure what's going on with them. The fuse is good, haven't checked the relay (where is it?) or the plate/bushings behind the airbag. It doesn't honk intermittently.
I know you don't need to take the bumper off but I read a comment on here that said it is easier if you do. Whether or not it actually is, I don't know, but I figured it couldn't hurt and I wanted to know how to take them out anyway.
