This is what I did and the water ran brown for a moment or two as the lighter stuff (dust mainly) was rinsed away.

So I vacuumed out all the debris of which there was plenty and later took the car by the DIY car wash and sprayed some soap spray in the duct openings then used the no spot rinse setting to rinse the soap out.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the week off eh so besides the coilover install documented here already, I also took off my bumper to clean the radiators. This ended up being a kind of fiddly job, more so than I had been lead to believe. Nevertheless, it is done and it was worthwhile. I just vacuumed the crud out, I didn't high pressure wash it and I could have/should have. There's a good video documenting the bumper removal process on youtube (not my video - many thanks to the dude that posted it up): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um-h2aUJHY4 Note that the AC condenser and radiators are sandwiched together. You have to separate the two to get at the ugly stuff. Here's the photos of the ****e stuck in between my condenser and radiator:

You don't have to pressure wash the area out. Once all the trash/debris stuff's been removed and everything buttoned back up and the bumper put back on right, you can dump a bucket of soapy water into each radiator duct -- the water will drain out -- and then with garden hose you can rinse out the ducting with tap water. You don't even need to dump a bucket of soapy water in. The stuff you're after is water soluble and just water from the garden hose will loosen the stuff and it will be carried away with the water as it drains out of the ducting. This is what I did and the water ran brown for a moment or two as the lighter stuff (dust mainly) was rinsed away. This also removes any residual salts and helps forestall corrosion. Sincerely, Macster.

Yes, it is an excellent video - but I must repeat, I didn't make the video, and do not take credit for it. I found it by googling and found it very useful for my job. I just watched it again to try and figure out why I was short one phillips screw and surplus one torx head screw at the end of my job ?!? I just can't figure it out. I noticed at the end of this video that the poster had washed his rads and I do wish I would have done so when I had them exposed. Macster has described a technique of doing this with the car assembled, and I will do this but it obviously should have been done while I had the thing apart. For what it's worth, I didn't wash them because I didn't want to lie in puddles of water while re-assembling the car. Oh well.

POST 5Original post

You can pop out the light in the trunk and unplug it - takes 5 seconds and can save a dead battery if you need to leave it open for several hours. Good job

POST 7Original post

The first time I cleaned the radiators I did wash the radiators/AC condensors. That is I sprayed them down with some no corrosive cleaner and let them soak then rinsed with hose water. I did this on driveway and the day got sunny and hot. By the time I was ready to button everything up the driveway was dry. Almost had a heat stroke, though. Another time, the last time, I cleaned them at work. Pulled car into shipping area and worked on concrete floor of shipping area. No water available and of course I didn't want to make any mess had any been available. So I vacuumed out all the debris of which there was plenty and later took the car by the DIY car wash and sprayed some soap spray in the duct openings then used the no spot rinse setting to rinse the soap out. Enough brown tinted water came out to convince me the bulk of the dirt was removed by this cleaning method. The main thing is to get the trash out and then flush the now clean areas with water to remove the water soluble salts, along of course with the fine dust/dirt that doesn't come out with vacuuming cause the dirt/dust stuck to the surfaces. Sincerely, Macster.
