I notice that the tubular exhaust mounting bracket is heavily corroded on my car and I am wondering if this is something that can be replaced whilst the engine is still fitted to the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I notice that the tubular exhaust mounting bracket is heavily corroded on my car and I am wondering if this is something that can be replaced whilst the engine is still fitted to the car. I figured this would be a good question to ask here before going to the trouble of removing mufflers etc to get at it since most of the exhaust nuts/bolts also corroded and it's going to be a fight to get them off.

POST 2Original post

The bracket will come off but your biggest concern will be breaking off a bolt head during removal. If your brackets are corroded then most likely the bolts will be corroded also. You can spray PB Blaster or similar on the bolts several times over several days to let the fluid penetrate into the threads. Then, when you first put tension on the bolt turn the head as if you were tightening not loosening. This will "set" the corrosion particles in the reverse direction you want to rotate the bolt shaft. Then, remove the bolt as you normally would. This is an old trick my grandfather showed me more than 30 years ago and it has saved quite a few bolts over the years. However, it doesn't always work and if you snap off the bolt head then you will have to drill and tap out the bolt stud. That may be a problem on the upper bolts with the engine in the car. Hope this helps. Tom

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks goldenwarrior - good to know that the bracket is removable before getting half way into the job to figure that out. The corrosion on the hardware is pretty bad so I am expecting the worst, but we'll see. Thanks for the tips. I havent seen the upper bolts I am hoping they are not so bad.

If you want to remove the brackets with the motor in the car, you will need to remove the mufflers. The easiest way to get them off is to remove the 2 bolts from the muffler brackets. Please note, that if these are rusted they will most likely break. You can get new bolts and nuts at your dealer. The muffler bracket are held onto the engine brackets by 3 nuts. You could also try to just remove the 3 nuts and pull the muffler brackets off with the mufflers. To be honest, I would be surprised if the exhaust engine brackets were rusted through as the are stainless versus the bolts and mounting studs for the muffler brackets which are not.

and you may as well just pull the bumper off for easier access as it is only a few screws to pull it

The attached pic shows the extent of the corrosion on the bracket and hardware - not pretty. The bumper and heat shields are off the car - I figure I may as well make this as easy as I can. Thanks for the input. Cheers.

POST 8Original post

How many miles on your 911? You do have a bit of corrosion there.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7379196

105,000mi since 2002. So salt (presumably) and exhaust heat combined have taken their toll on these steel parts.

POST 10Original post

Holy cow!! Serious corrosion... I have a almost new set of Headers for sale that came off a 2001 with less than 1,000 miles. PM me if you are interested.
