Leading evidence: 'tank' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tank' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I filled the tank with coolant and it seems like it got worse, when I got to work a huge amount of liquid had leaked out.

Suggestion
Not an emergency repair but you will want to get it fixed promptly to avoid additional leakage which could result in something more pressing needing repair prior to driving.

well, no, it's not 9 hours to replace just he coolant tank, it's 9 hours to repair the transmission leak, replace coolant tank, and change out two engine mounts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Help please. I have a leak on the drivers side rear, right above the exhaust pipe. Everytime I park I look and it immediately has a few drips. It looks like it is coming from right above the exhaust. It looks kind of like oil but doesn't really smell like oil.
Sounds like coolant tank or, in my case, water pump. Either one is very common and cost is approx. $500-$750 for complete job. Parts aren't too bad if your up to the DYI. Do a search for coolant tank or water pump. 1st quess would be coolant tank.
However, sometimes the coolant cap can be bad ($20). Is there the same color liquid around your coolant cap (blue cap on passanger side of engine compartment)?
It looks oily on the floor but when I touch it and wipe it off it doesn't seem like oil at all. My finger kind of feels like when u put Alcohol on on it. The blue cap is on the drivers side and it is below the min. How do I know if it is collant leak or water pump? It seems to happen right after I drive for a bit and the pressure builds up. Not if I just start it and move it real quick
Had a friend with a 99 while at the track . He drove it fine no leaking until the car got up to temp and then it started leaking. It would stop again after cooling down some and not driving to hard was ok. He even replaced the cap at the time hoping it was just the cap.
It ended up being the coolant tank.
Iv been looking around. It seems like it might be the cooling tank. I read about it giving off a burning smell? I did notice that when I drive the car and stop. There is a burning smell. Is this covered under regular warranties
I went back and noticed that when I washed it away, the area that had the fluid was already dry, ,where as the the area with the water was still wet? sound like coolant?
Sounds like coolant from the expansion tank. Could just be the cap or a bad tank.
Bit of a paint to replace, not too much money, but quite a bit of effort. Not an emergency repair but you will want to get it fixed promptly to avoid additional leakage which could result in something more pressing needing repair prior to driving.
I filled the tank with coolant and it seems like it got worse, when I got to work a huge amount of liquid had leaked out. I'm taking into the dealer at lunch, I have a carmax warranty so it should be covered. damn...just got the car a month ago to..
Mine did the same thing. It's hard to tell coolant tank from water pump (I couldn't). I would get it fixed soon. If it's leaking while driving, you may nor know because it will leak on exhaust and flash off or on the road. Although Possche made pretty good air cooled engines, the 996 wasn't designed that way so I would check it out soon.
Again, very common and once fixed, it should stay that way. One day job at shop and $500-$750.
My 2000 996 had a motor mount blow out oil. The oil substance sounds like what you described.
You can see the motor mount connection behind/above each exhaust tip. Check and see if there is oil on the bolt.
I took it in to the shop, it was the tank. I needed two new engine mounts and a transmission leak fixed and I should be back in business. I had a $75 deductible, but the warranty company will only pay $115 per hour for labor, porsche wants $170, so I guess I have to make up $50 for 9hrs of labor, not too bad I guess. Better than having to pay all of it.
9HRS OF LABOR??????????????????????????????? Took me 3hrs and that was with breaks. I did it two days ago...its a major pain to do but isnt something that bad.....Id definately question 9hrs of labor....you are getting hosed!!
Auto trans?
I have not changed mounts, but I have taken them off, let's see 4 minutes, 2 hours for the tank - 7 hours for trans leak? Are they taking it out ? Naw, that's only 2 hour job????
I haven't had multiple jobs done by a porsche dealer. I do know most shops just look up the time involved for each individual job on the car. Then they add the time of labor from the job to each section of the repairs. You end up paying for all the labors at the least even if one jobs labor reduces the time for the rest of the jobs. You'll get billed for additional labor time for sure but wont get billed less if they don't take as much time. Money money money. Porsche dealers of course I've heard some say don't do that. I imagine all of them aren't that sensible.
damn..well I could argue with the guy, but I guess that would just make him mad....then who knows what he might do to my car....its kind of like pissing off the waiter before he has served you your food.
emdog agreed.
Pac996 very true. When they say "while we're in there..." I assume that means less labor cost. No that means less time spent.
Warranty $50 labor X9 hours= $450
Replace coolant tank, normal hourly labor and parts= $450 (approx.).
Lesson learned= Priceless.
Owning a Porsche is a constant learning experience.
well, no, it's not 9 hours to replace just he coolant tank, it's 9 hours to repair the transmission leak, replace coolant tank, and change out two engine mounts. I talked to the service guy and he said he was going to try and get my labor rate down to $125 -$130, so at that rate I will only be spending $210. $135 for labor and $75 deductible, not too bad for all the items that are going to be fixed. He originally told me that the tank was a 4 hour job, so I guess that means 3 hours for transmission and 2 hours for engine mounts?? who knows I just want my car back, I'm sick of driving this prius.
