Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

these cars are water cooled, there is no oil that will stay in without leaking out - use only Porsche approved water though

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This has been covered more than any topic, but when I do a search, the results are different than what my OM says for choice of oil. My book says to use 10-40 or 5-40 in cooler temps, this is under synthetic oil. I own an '04 carrera. Is there anything more I need to know? Thanks!

POST 6Original post

In my opinion, no. There is nothing else you need to know. Oil preferences are like elephant repellent. Everybody has their own superstitions about it and, because there have been no publicized examples of oil viscosity-related engine failures, they assume theirs works. And, just as with elephant repellent, the fact that nobody has the nerve to experiment for real means the speculative debate never ends.

POST 7Original post

No offense to poster. This will be a long, long thread. I use 0w40 and have for all the time I've had the car (3 years, 35,000 miles). Car has 100,000 miles. Nuff said

Interesting article. Confirms what I've believed all along and learned from building high performance and racing motors for motorcycles over the last 30+ years. Kendall was always my oil of choice, what I sold, recommended, and used myself in nearly a decade of roadracing and LSR. The original Kendall is now Brad Penn. Too expensive due to sparse distribution channels to sell any more. Most people base their decisions on what oil to run (and most everything else in life), upon television advertising during football games. Cynical, I know
