0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'light switch' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'light switch' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery charge cold' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When my '01 C4 started doing this I drove directly to Costco and purchased/installed a new battery.

And while you're at it check the battery post connections at both ends.

The Litronics use a high voltage to drive the lamps, and this is triggered from the normal lighting circuit via a control ballast.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

either way, i will report back once i get it fixed.
when i turn on litronics from cold start, they come on fine. it is always after i drive the car, park, then return to it (within a few hrs... last occurance after 2hrs) that it doesnt want to come back on. i did see them flickering last time out but it failed to light and stayed off the entire trip home, about 45mins.
just tried turning them on but they failed to light. its been 2 days which is not the normal rest period for me, which is typically 5 days or so. they both flicker and try to ignite but do not come on. i have an 01 c4.
any ideas?
Ballast or trigger signal failure would be my first bet.
The Litronics use a high voltage to drive the lamps, and this is triggered from the normal lighting circuit via a control ballast.
Lack of high voltage or trigger signal to the ballast control would cause the litronics lamps to staff off.
thanks for your suggestion cdodkin...
just a few more details. this has been happening for about 2mos now. so say 8-10 occasions. i know i know... i should drive it more. as it did not fire up at all today, we may have reached the next stage.
COuld be as simple as the light switch as if both flicker at same time I believe there are separate ballasts for each side and Ican't believe they would both fail at the same time. Simply wiggle the light switch and see if the flicker repeats?? Light switch is common failure in all my reading.
Good Luck!! Demosan
Sounds EXACTLY like the light switch. There was a thread just a week or so ago about this.
Here you go!

Check the battery charge cold, and then HOT. And while you're at it check the battery post connections at both ends. HID lights are highly sensitive to battery voltage.
thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. my cpo just expired and i was hoping they might try and take care of me but the dealer wouldnt commit to anything.... just said bring it in, we diagnose and then we'll see what we can do. too much trouble if its just a 100 part. so im gonna try the switch.
i searched all over for a DIY but i couldnt find anything.... prof dell, care to provide me with a step by step? im not real handy but with steps laid out, i should be able to do this. im afraid of breaking something off as i try to dismantle. nothing is ever obvious to me....
or does anyone know a link to a DIY. thanks.

When my '01 C4 started doing this I drove directly to Costco and purchased/installed a new battery. Two years now and no repeat.
The is an igniter/ballast, solid state, for each headlight.
thanks prof dell.... you ALWAYS have the answers.
i truly appreciate it. i did read your post before i started my thread. it wasnt exactly the same situation as mine would come on again after rest, or did anyway, till now. tho im thinking based on wwest's comments i may wanna look a bit harder at the battery before i do the switch.
either way, i will report back once i get it fixed. thanks to all.
Because the HID/Xenon initial start-up, "ignition" (initial xenon gas arc firing), surge current is so high/heavy many aftermarket kits come with a relay so the ballasts get connected more directly to the battery. So yes, a few milli-ohms of extra resistance in the switch (or wiring) can make a difference. But I would still look first at the battery, the battery post connections (burnish/clean?), both ends, and maybe the engine grounding strap (the alternator ground/negative "return") back in the engine compartment
a lil assist please...
bought the light switch but having probs removing the air vent. i removed the light control and the screws but i cant free the vent. feels like its tabbed into place. left side of vent piece(screw side) does seem to snap off but everything else feels real tight and wont snap off. i can barely put my fingers underneath the bottom part of vent to try and lift/snap off. tried prying off with butterknife but i feel im exerting too much force and feels like i will break the vent piece.
sorry if dumb question but can anyone assist? thanks in advance.
here is an inside view from an user that took it off the wrong way, is there anything you can see that will help... Dont force it, those suckers are fairly pricey!!!
Here is an ebay auction that shows all sides of the part, maybe you can see something there too
