No big deal at around 30-40degrees, but once there was light snow/light ice on the ground - holy crap - it was the worst snow driving experience I've ever had.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Folks, Sadly the early signs of the looming winter are making themselves felt up here in Toronto. Evenings and nights are much cooler (45F to 55F) and daytime temperatures are barely in the 60F to 70F range. My question is about the safety and durability of using summer tires in these cooling temperatures. I don't intend to drive the vehicle year round and I don't really want to spend money on a set of winter tires for just a few more weeks of driving. So can I keep driving safely for another month or so or should I be putting the car away soon? Thanks in advance!

POST 4Original post

Last winter I drove my 911 whenever the temps hovered around 40 degrees F and never had any issues. I occasionally drove when temps were in the 30s but above freezing.Oh, these drives were on summer tires, no issues at all.

POST 5Original post

I've driven on summer tires in cold temperatures without causing any damage. The tires get harder and more slippery the colder the weather gets. It can be kind of fun at times because you can kick the tail out at rediculously low speeds. Just be careful.

POST 6Original post

The Potenza's are one one the best summer tires and perform fine in cold temps. I drive mine in climates ranging for -20F - +110F. Obviously, like driving in the rain, adjustments in driving are needed when the temperatures drop.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice folks! I am going try to get in as much driving as possible before having to put the car away.

POST 8Original post

I drive the car with summer tires until they start putting salt on the roads. Then I garage the car, more due to the salt than the temps and tires..

POST 9Original post

I drove in the snow/ice last winter with my summer tires, and couldn't believe how dangerous they were... It was like driving on marbles. No big deal at around 30-40degrees, but once there was light snow/light ice on the ground - holy crap - it was the worst snow driving experience I've ever had. This winter I'm going to get some all seasons, like the bridgestone re960's. I drive my car year around, rain or shine.

POST 10Original post

in TO you're good until the first or second week of November. After that, ante up and get a set of dedicated winter tires if you ever intend to take your car out on clear sunny winter days.

Noticed that Tire Rack just started carrying some Michelin A/S's in 225/40 and 285/30 x 18 sizes... Not sure what to expect but "performance-oriented" A/S tires are getting much, much better than the old days.

Bang on Phil. Sadly my car goes away the last week of October ... and the winter booties go on the clk around the same time. Even early this am (5:30 or so) with the temps down, I noticed how much less grib the tires have.

POST 13Original post

I drive all year on Summer tires. The only time I don't drive is when it snows which is hardly ever these days in the DC area.

POST 14Original post

There is nothing wrong with good summer tires on cold dry days as long as you warm them up.

Thanks Phil. I will probably get them next winter ... I got a newer car than I had planned and hence spent more money. I am not sure that more money for tires 4 weeks after buying the car will sit well with the wife!

It's colder so what; you just need more time to get them warm and have a little less grip. If streets are dry, there's no evidence that winter tires have shorter braking distances or better grip than summer tires; even at temps below 40 F. I don't know of any tire test out there that proved summer tires to perform minor than winter tires on dry cold days.

POST 17Original post

Early in the morning on a crisp fall day with the road a little frosty you will be suprised by the squirly-ness of your summer tires!! Be careful
