My understanding is that the oil starvation issue is more likely to occur with slicks than R-Compounds.

I ran my '99 996 on average of 10-12 times a year for 6 years at DE's and I never had oil issues with the car.

OTOH, as has been stated, there are a lot of 3.4l engines running with R-compounds with no issues.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've read a lot on the pcar forums that 996's experience oil starvation because of the uber cornering that can be acheived with R-compound tires. Is this a big problem that will nuke my engine? Can i compensate for it by making sure the oil level is right at the top bar of the oil meter? (i really want to run R tyres this year at the track)
also, who was the company who makes that add on oil kit to fix this problem?
It's enough of a problem that Porsche Motorsports sells an oiling kit for use on the track. Brae-Krause(sp) also sells a kit which is a lot less expensive and approved for PCA club racing.
My understanding is that the oil starvation issue is more likely to occur with slicks than R-Compounds. However some here have noticed a decrease in pressure when in long sweeper type corners. In my local region there are a few 996s driven on r-comps by regulars and none have had an engine oiling issue as yet so far as I know. YMMV.

It is suppoosedly a problem with the 3.4l engines, only on slicks and not on R-compounds. Have had one poster claim a "nuked" engine on a long right handed banked sweeper, with video showing engine smoking. Don't believe the BK solution is a solution. OTOH, as has been stated, there are a lot of 3.4l engines running with R-compounds with no issues.
^ that's good to know. what about during tighter left-right left sections of a track?
what's the difference between the porsche motorsport and the BK kits aside from price?
As I recall, the warning was about slicks not R compound. When I had my 3.4L I took a 140 mph right hander at Brainerd hundreds of times with no ill effects. I spoke to a bunch of the Grand Am Cup teams last year and none of the ones I spoke to were worried about it. I think the Porsche Motorsports fix was a CYA and the BK fix is a way to make a quick buck.
Just my opinion. I'm sure now I'll grenade at Atlanta next week.

Dead,
I'm not saying you shouldn't worry. I'm just saying I've never had a problem and it doesn't seem like others that are racing the cars are having trouble either. I guess I am saying you shouldn't worry. Never mind.
I PCA Club Race in Class C. This will be my third season in my 99 996 which has been upgraded to 04 specs. 3.6L X51, etc. No TV, no prize money. Just fun.
Jim
My old 3.4 would drop the oil pressure below the level at idle in both left & right sweepers on street tires. It bothered me and was one of the reasons to move up to the GT3. Not an issue anymore...
I'd be curious to see the data on the Brey-Krause kit. If that baffle truly works it might be worth it.
The Porsche kit requires some machining. Pretty much an expensive PITA.
Just FYI - I am considering a custom full dry sump setup with a resevoir. Stay tuned. Currently researching.

Waittasec, JimB, if you're running an X51 then you've got the Motorsports oiling kit, correct? I think it's part of the X51 package.
My dealer quoted me on the order of $1500 for the oiling update. I'm one of those who can see his oil pressure drop on hard right-handers, on street tires. I also may be one of the few who is crazy enough to be watching the gauges, rather than the road, while going around a hard right hander
Stiles, I don't believe there is an oiling update for your '03 coupe. The 3.6L reportedly had the oil startvation issues resolved, and that's why there is no oil starvation kit for it. There is, however, the X51 kit for a lot more money. That should make those right handers a lot more fun and force you to keep your eyes on the road rather the gauges
.
I ran my '99 996 on average of 10-12 times a year for 6 years at DE's and I never had oil issues with the car. No white smoke coming out after car sitting after a hard run. You shouldn't need to worry but to each their own. Regards. Mike
They make/made the Motorsports oiling kit for both the 3.4 and the 3.6 (and IIRC it happens to be part of the X51 package). I think what you're referring to is the fact that they made some oiling enhancements in stock form on the 3.6 that supposedly made the oiling kit unnecessary for all but the hardest core club racers.
Yes, that Motorsport Oiling Kit is part of the X51 package but it can be purchased seperately and yes, the BK kit is simply a depper oil "pan" with different baffling. I don't believe that the 3.6 was improved in terms of oiling compared to the 3.4 but I could be wrong. That Porsche Motorsport kit includes additional scavenge pumps and requires modifications to one of the valve covers. Either way, with R Compound tires, my X51 equipped 40 Jahre has had no issues and pressure is always up there. That said, I had no issues with my previous 2002 3.6 or my 1999 3.4 other than having to add a third radiator to both cars to keep them cooler at the track.
As far as I know the oiling systems on the 3.4 and 3.6 engines are very, very similar. The 3.6 (M96/03) has a slightly different crankase and larger main bearings to accommodate the longer stroke than the M96/01. The only difference I am aware of is the larger capacity oil pressure pump needed for the Variocam Plus in the 3.6. There were also some baffle updates that started on mid production 3.4s (not sure what year) and carried over to the 3.6. Both have single stage scavenging pumps instead of the dual stage pumps found with the X51 and Motorsports kits. The dual stage type scavenging pumps are also seen on the GT/TT engines. In my opinion the 3.6 is just as susceptible to potential oil starvation as the 3.4, but who knows how significant of a problem that is anyway.
JimB, I would like to know more about the setups run on those GrandAm cars , I didn't realize they were using "our" engines.
Doug,
You can check out the rules on the Grand Am site. They are very close to PCA stock class rules. No modifications to the engine after the intake and before the exhaust. I think they run around 3000 lbs. Spec Hoosiers. Stock brakes (I think). Obviously they strip their interiors and add fire systems and full cages. Very trick suspensions. Pretty much like my car except I have to run with two seats and leave the carpet in per PCA rules.
I tried to pry the teams for some setup info but didn't get far. They are pretty serious about their competition.
