Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So if I swap it out, then wouldn't the dealer be unable to look up the security code in the future should I happen to misplace the code when changing the battery?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know whether the two ***** (power/volume and tuning) on the face of the factory stereo/CD unit are removable, and if so, how? The ***** are rather scuffed up and worn on mine, so I'd like to replace them with the ones from my brother's '00 Boxster, which has an identical factory unit (he's selling his car). Do I just pull on the **** really hard or are they not removable? I didn't want to give it a try until I had consulted with the members. Please help, thanks.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm...would that be easier than removing the *****? If so, then that's certainly a better solution. Does someone have a DIY on removing the head unit? Also, isn't the serial # of the factory head unit linked to the car's VIN#? So if I swap it out, then wouldn't the dealer be unable to look up the security code in the future should I happen to misplace the code when changing the battery? Thanks in advance for the help.

POST 4Original post

You need a radio removal tool. I am not sure if you can do it without it. The head unit is linked to the radio code and not the VIN#. As long as you have the code, you are fine.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, turbo951fan. I guess I'll have to get my hands on that radio removal tool online somewhere.

POST 6Original post

I have in the back of my mind you can buy just the *****. Give Becker a call. They also have the removal keys. The code is determined by the radio serial number, not the car. Some cars do however have the code stored in the DME.

POST 7Original post

Tool Pants, How can you get the code if you've lost it? Can I just call a dealer and give them the vin (and or radio serial number)? Thanks, Tim

POST 8Original post

Some dealers keep it in their file. In the old days they could call an automated 800 number and punch in the serial number. They are supposed to do it on the computer now but I have been told the phone number still works. If you know someone real good at the dealer you can do it over the phone. My dealer does not charge. Some cars have it stored in the DME. Why some do and some don't I don't know. My car did not so when my friend had it hooked up to the PST2 I had him enter the code in the DME. Problem with trying to get the code this way is you need a PST2/PIWIS to read the DME. Becker will also sell you a replacement code card. The need your serial number and proof of ownership. I think it is $30. Some dealers and owners write the number on the option sticker. Someone on this board figured out the code system formula from the last 4 digits of the serial number. Someone sent me a decoder and I tired it on 4 serial numbers with known codes. It was correct 2 of the 4 times.

POST 9Original post

Thanks. I didn't get a code card when I bought the car (second hand) so this is something I've been wondering about for that inevitable day when the battery dies. Thanks for the info! Tim
