FWIW, I installed a 3.8 box with the 3.8 snorkel and I did not have to move the pump but the pumps on the 99 are different than later years.

I also changed the attachment piece that inserts into the rear lid as the 3.8 snorkel is not designed to work with the 996 piece.

I swapped the snorkel from the 996 air-box to my 997 air-box (3.8L so probably 997.2 right?).

I'm running the 996 snorkel with the 3.8 airbox (relabeled as a 4.0) and I don't believe there's any issue with airflow.

I am still having trouble installing the 997 airbox in my 996 4S.
From another thread, I saw mention of using a 997 air box in a 996 for the visual appeal.
has anyone done this?
Do you have pics and or a guide to do it?
Is there any other reason to do it? does it breathe better?
Thanks!
Gopher
SoCal911t, am I right that you still used hte 996 snorkel? It fits in the 997 box correctly and lines up with the spoiler inlet? What about the MAF, can you use your old one or do you need a 997-specific one to fit the box?
The MAF was plug & play. I used the 996 snorkel. For the intake boot, i used the 997 one. I don't remember if it was because the 996 one wouldn't fit or I just thought it looked better. The 996 air filter element was also a direct fit.
I can confirm the 997s (3.8) airbox fits MkII but you have to relocate the SAI pump to the left a bit with a customized SAI pump bracket. MAF and filter transfer directly.
I used the bracket from EVOM but didn't like it because the SAI pump was much louder.
+996 looks great
Be interested to know if it does indeed flow/breathe better. I recall a thread where Jake mentioned the 3.8S airbox is the one to get if you're wanting to change. He mentioned it gave a little more power at the very top end - don't quote me as thats from a vague recollection.
If I recall Dundon Motorsports Checked out on the Dyno about the airflow comparison between airboxes and they can pipe in if they read this. However, they also did a test on my cold air kit and found the 997 airbox to better. So we went with that and I do like the looks.
socal911t...You may also want to get a 997 oilcap as well....
Yea I have done it on my 3.6 996.
Everything fits except for the air funnel, so I used the original one. Like others have said, if you relocate the SAI pump then the whole thing should drop it. To change the airfilter, the whole 997 airbox will need to come out, as the bolts are screwed in from the bottom.
Installed, with silicon air pipe.

I bought a 997.1, 3.6 air box last summer. Did not get around to installing yet.
From what I understand, you need to use snorkel from 996 air box for good sealing of cold air coming into engine compartment and the box labelled 3.6 (997.1) does not require moving the air pump, but the box labelled 3.8 (997.2) does require moving pump.
Can someone chime in and let me know if this is correct?
Thanks
David
I used the 996 snorkel (with 3.6 box) and did not have to do anything to the air pump.
( I edited my earlier response because someone was asking about the snorkel and I had intake boot in my head when I answered
)

I did the swap on mine , pretty much plug and play , mounts the same ,same maf, same air filter I reused my 996 snorkel as you dont have to move the air pump and it mates to the lid better but I may get a ducktail in which case the 997 snorkel will fit better
FWIW, I installed a 3.8 box with the 3.8 snorkel and I did not have to move the pump but the pumps on the 99 are different than later years. I also changed the attachment piece that inserts into the rear lid as the 3.8 snorkel is not designed to work with the 996 piece.

Is there any difference in the openning size 996 vs.997, ie more air flow to box?
I am wondering because the X51 air box has dual inlets, and the minor engine differences internally doesn't seem to dictate doubling the (CFM ) volume of air going to throttle body?
That change in moving the flexible portion to the plastic snorkel vs. rubber lid collar appears to be a cost savings change. The newer style collar would be much less to manufacture and the snorkel, once tooled, is a wash.
Will the 997 3.8 Airbox fit a 996.2, 3.6 (2002) C4S Tiptronic without buying a bracket or moving the airpump?
Will the snorkel from the spoiler have to be the 996 air box snorkel? Sorry for the questions, but could not get at clear answer from this thread.
From my understanding you can use a 3.8L box + 996 snorkel so you don't need to move the pump.
I don't have any experience with it - just what I remember reading.
My mistake. It is vacuum actuated but it is electronically controlled through the DME. According to Renntech, it is a 7.8x DME from the 997.2 which of course would not work in the 996 without serious modifications. I have also read where people have glued the flap shut to gain the noise.
My 996 came with a K&N intake...would like to switch to this. Great to know it's a direct drop in. My previous smog inspector gave me a hard time about it, even with the CARB approval sticker on the intake!
Its a direct drop , but you may have to loosen the air pump bolts and rotate it ten degrees , takes 15 mins
you might not have to do this if a 996 snorkel is mated to the air box but will if you use the 997 snorkel
I have started the change now, used 1 hour and not even close to completing. The main screw is hard to fasten, the snorkel bumps into the pump on the left.
will remove the pump and change the angle and see if it fits. So far it's not even close...
My personal experience is you won't be able to fit a 3.8 airbox on a 996.2 unless you relocate the SAI bump (an inch or so to the left) with a custom bracket (such as the one from EVOM). You may be able to fit the airbox using a 996 snorkel but I have not tried so can't confirm.
I think they pop up on ebay from time to time.
I'm in two minds about this box, it looks great but I feel it comes from the beginning of an era where Porsche started branding everything the lettering would fit on including things in the engine bay.
Anyway OP box looks good, even better if you actually have a 3.8 like Ahsai does!!
Is there any advantage to running the 3.8 housing vs. the 3.6?
I currently have a k&n intake, ported gt3 tb, and IPD plenum. I'd like to swap out the k&n intake for a 997 intake + upgraded hose.
I recently put in a used 997 3.8 airbox. I kept the 996 snorkel so I didn’t need to put in a 997.1 joint flange (yellow arrow). That part is not expensive and it takes about 5 minutes to replace, but I didn’t want to mess with the SAI pump. I did find I needed to dremmel a section near the lid latch (green circle at green arrow) to fit the airbox in the two bottom post holes. There is a membrane on the bottom of airbox that’s delicate, so don’t puncture it. I couldn’t get my oil fill tube to latch, so it just lays on/in the depression. I don’t know if the 997.1 oil fill tube works on the 996.2 (but if it does...). The MAF secures to the 997 box with tamper-proof T20 panhead screws. The electrical actuator for the rear valve (red arrow) is next to the MAF harness grommet. That actuator has a vacuum tube that runs to driver side rear of box. Leave all that alone. The Helmhotz resonator on the 997 box is stout! I deleted the resonator completely out of the 996 box, but this one is a beast, so I just kept it plug-only.

I am still having trouble installing the 997 airbox in my 996 4S.
I have seen someone writing that they move the bracket 10 degrees with existing holes. Any thoughts on how to do this?
Too tight the bracket touches the snorkel
Very limited space to have the 997 snorkel.
It was unconfirmed in post #44 and he mentioned moving the SAI pump, I dislocated the pump but there were no other holes or possible angles to change it to as far as I could figure out. If you have explanation and some pictures to go with it, to move the pump please contribute.

Sounds about right. One caution. With the new bracket, the SAI pump will be much louder. I'm sure you can make some rubber buffers to create more isolation.
I got my 3.8 intake and EVOM bracket installed this afternoon. My bracket re-used the rubber feet on the bracket and I did not notice too much of a difference noise wise from the pump.
Glad to hear it works well for you. Perhaps mine is somehow different. I saw at least one other person complained about the same though. I also reused the rubber feet but somehow I think my pump is touching the car frame or the coolant reservoir.
How do you like the new noise and throttle response (if any difference)?
Finally heard it kick on with me in the vehicle. I know what you mean. When you stand outside the vehicle it's not really noticeable, when definitely audible in the cabin. I think I have an idea on how to help cut down the noise.
I will need more time in the vehicle to discern any differences, if any.
I just scored ($100.00) a 3.8 box with only 40K on it. I've missed several over the past year ,but it was well worth the wait!
If using the 997 snorkel is the 997.2 collar needed that attaches to the lid?
I swapped the snorkel from the 996 air-box to my 997 air-box (3.8L so probably 997.2 right?). I think the 997 box had screws to attach the snorkel to the air-box, so I used them as well (I don't know if they were stock or not). As for differences in sound/performance. None as far as I can tell. It definitely looks nicer, and since I had my 3.4 upgraded to a FSI 3.8, I figured it was appropriate both aesthetically and mechanically (though certainly not necessary). Good luck
Lowpue is correct. 997.1 snorkel pops right in to the air box, but 997 snorkel needs the 997.1 ring. In the meantime the 996 snorkel pops right in to the 3.8 box. So you can use it now.
Fitting the motor in is not the poblem, getting it to run is.
Also this thread is about the airbox so if u need motor swap info u may need to start a new thread
997 airbox in 996
Does it fit. Yes it does with a slight modification.
I have a 996 C4, it has an IPD 82mm plenum, with larger throttle body.
It also had the K&N induction kit. I decided to replace the induction kit with a 997 airbox..
It fits perfectly, the only modification necessary is you have to swap the snorkel going from the airbox to the boot lid.
Has it increased power, YES my car was a 3.6, according to the air box it is now a 3.8, so its got to be more powerful (LOL).
So does the 997.2 box work, or do you need a 997.1 airbox?
Its just the snorkel that needs to be replaced, correct?
The 996 snorkel works though, right?
Im thinking about getting a 997 airbox with the 3.8 on it and having it for when I eventually rebuild my engine into a 3.8.
I want to make sure the 997.2 airbox fits the 996 before I buy one.
Bumping a ghost thread here, but after reading through it and searching a few others, I wanted to confirm:
A 997.1S 3.8 air-box will fit a 996.1 3.4 without moving the SAP? Or is that only as long as I use the stock 996 snorkel? If I want to use the 997 snorkel, I need to move the pump with a bracket and swap the rubber piece the snorkel mates to on the deck-lid?
My car is a 3.4->3.8 build and Im happy for it to just be an aesthetic upgrade, but are any potential flow gains lost by reusing the 996 snorkel? And the resonator flap thats actuated by a 997S vacuum system over 3500rpm should left fully open, correct?
The part number for the 997.1S box is:
997-110-921-01
I have a 3.8L box on my '99. I used the 997 snorkel and rubber piece with it. I didn't move the SAP at all... it's close and sometimes touches but fits.
I'm running the 996 snorkel with the 3.8 airbox (relabeled as a 4.0) and I don't believe there's any issue with airflow.
My car was dyno'ed at over 400hp.
I didn't connect it.
Right on! Thanks fellas. Ill give it a shot with the OG 996 snorkel since I dont wanna buy a bracket or the gusset for the deck.
@TexSquirrel
your car has an FSI build, right? Was this the box JR reccod for your build?
Saw that one. Id rather literally shove the $2500 up my own *** tbh, but nice to know he approved of the 997S box for an increased bore build.
Cheers!
Normally I run a silicone intake tube and cap off the resonance flap. I put the 997 tube on to pass smog, but, like
@TexSquirrel
said, there is no noticeable difference.
997S air-box installed. Another confirmation this is a direct bolt-in on my .1 car when you reuse the 996 snorkel. Much more grunt to the intake noise, looks great, and honors the 3.8 build! Happy camper.
