Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've noticed recently that prices for moderately higher mileage early 996s, 50-60,000 miles, seem crazy low. Anyway, my interest in one would be as a potential track car. Most of the cars I've seen do not have LSDs. I've read recently on Rennlist that at least one 996 owner was considering having a LSD put into his car. Question #1: How big a deal is it to have a LSD installed in the 996 transmission? Cost/difficulty etc. I'm assuming I could buy the unit for $2,000 or less. It's the installation that I'm wondering about. I gather the tranny design isn't as modification friendly as, say a 993's. Question #2: I've read that a factory rebuilt engine can be obtained for around $8000 (which amazes me). Can an '03 engine be purchased for that price? ... I'm assuming an '03 would be preferable to a '99, for example ... and are there mechanical or other issues putting an '03 engine in a '99 or '00? Would the '99 still run in PCA stock C with an '03 motor, for example? Question #3: What's the approximate cost of modifying the engine in order to address issues related to wet sump/oil pressure? Do most guys that race 996s in PCA C make these modifications? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and knowledge. If these specific questions have been addressed previously, I apoligize. I've done a search and couldn't find the answers. Dave _____________ '97 993 coupe '84 911 coupe

POST 2Original post

if you want to put a 3.6L in a '99-'01 996 then get one with e-gas. the early '99s have a cable throttle and i imagine would be a B to retrofit to egas (if it can be done at all). if you go to the added expense of changing the engine, you should have x51 installed too.

POST 3Original post

i had a heavily tracked 996c2. if you aren't at the top of club racing, you really don't need LSD. i am pretty sure you will not find 3.6L crate motors for $8k, used from scrap yard perhaps. but no new motors.

POST 5Original post

Is Egas superior for track use? I would have thought cable to be better. Egas doesn't allow simultaneous gas and throttle for the rare corner it may be used. I occasionally use gas and throttle to warm brakes, dry them or knock off deposits. AS

POST 6Original post

1) If you are going to run LSD in stock C it has to be the stock unit. I've heard that it doesn't hold up well at the track but I have no first hand knowledge. It would not be anymore difficult to install than any other 911. 2) You can "update" your 99 996 to 03 specs per club racing rules. It is however very difficult to put a 3.6L in a 99. I would never do it again. Egas isn't a problem but everything else is. I would stick with a 3.4L. FWIW, you can buy a "new" rebuilt 3.6L for around $8k. Double that to add x51. 3) I haven't done anything with the oil starvation thing. I talked to several Grand Am Cup teams and they haven't either. If you do want to do it it's only a couple grand. Good luck. Hope to see you at the track. Jim

POST 9Original post

I have researched the LSD. I plan on putting one in my car for 2006. I am waiting for the clutch and RMS to finally go. Once they do, I will do it all. I was quoted about $2200 to do a LSD install. That included shipping the tranny to and from the shop doing it. For more info, email me. I found out some good info regarding the LSD units themselves. Chad
