Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use rennline' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean after the last repaint' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
For the track rat that is pushing engines to the limit for concentrated periods of time, no obstruction equals best performance as long as youre taking the bumper off on a regular basis and cleaning radiators and AC condensers.

Suggestion
Most important is whats been said, keep these components clean serviceable is a must, especially for the 996 first watercooled cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The standard aero bumpers didnt have any mesh in them, Id venture to bet someone added it on the cup one too. I run mine open like it came from the factory, to allow as much uninterrupted air flow in as possible. I just make sure the condensers are always clear of debris. Usually drop the bumper every couple years and spray them with the pressure washer, vacuum them out throughout the season too
Chucknorris love the color of your car also which lip is on your bumper
C2 I need a cover way too much debris in nyc kicking up I literally had my bumper re sprayed 2x since I bought I will be repainting the new one and have it xpeled
my radiators are less then 3 years old it look clean after the last repaint
This is the correct response. Shouldn't put any kind of grate in front as it certainly will disrupt the air flow, just keep condensers clean and leave it be.
I enjoy throwing these diffusers in the trash.
Lots of cars come here with them, none leave with them installed. We dispose of them, or send them home with the car for the owner to sell on eBay, because they'll never be fitted again.
Any diffusion is too much.
I've done the work back to back, to back. You could not make me diffuse the inlet flow.
Don't add something to be lazy, and spend less time cleaning the area behind the bumper thinking you can add a grille and keep it clean. They still don't work, and the area still gets debris build up.
Clean the area behind the bumper once per year, and don't diffuse the air.
Depends what you consider large. Most offered like what OP was looking at is going to be pretty disruptive, anything larger probably won't really catch anything that wouldn't find it's way in anyways.
Regardless of the size of gaps, disruption is there, and then, if the "purpose" is to catch debris, anything caught is going to further prevent air flow.
This makes me wonder why the newer GT3 cars use a fairly fine mesh covers from factory. Any explanation for this? I'd imagine a highly strung NA motor made for racing will produce plenty heat so why are they there from factory?
I think the vent openings are definitely larger allowing more air flow as well as bigger radiators thus requiring mesh to protect
also there was a small metal mesh on my new bumper I didn’t know it was added after it left the factory
but I’m taking Jakes advice and going commando
That definitely makes sense! By this logic, this could apply to C4S and other cars that might be running that turbo style bumper that has a much larger opening by comparison to a standard C2. 40AE cars actually run both, a turbo bumper and larger turbo radiators.
I think this is a fair comment . However, like life itself, it depends. For the track rat that is pushing engines to the limit for concentrated periods of time, no obstruction equals best performance as long as youre taking the bumper off on a regular basis and cleaning radiators and AC condensers. I dont have any data to support, but this is common sense and what the factory was thinking in design.
For us mere mortals, that run their cars on street rallies, road-trips, around town. Id argue the mesh is valuable. The mesh does disrupt airflow at the limit, but does protect the aluminum faces of components from major damage. Putting mesh on two cars this w-end. Both are non-track cars and suspect Im going to find all sorts of FOD between them. One car is a 991.2 GTS with the larger inlets other is 03 C4S, again with bigger openings. GTS Owner just had to replace a radiator to the tune of $1250+. To me, mesh is a good compromise, and can be removed quite easily if car graduates to track use predominately.
Most important is whats been said, keep these components clean serviceable is a must, especially for the 996 first watercooled cars. Im on the temp gauge like a hawk always. If I was tracking would do center radiator add also
I seriously doubt a thin mesh will give much drop in airflow, but one thing I know is true...If I'd had mesh grilles i wouldn't have found 2x dead sparrows stuck in my bumper stinking out my garage a couple of days later! The flies also gave it away! Interestingly they weren't in the rads and had somehow missed the ducts and got beneath them and in the back corner of the bumper.
Considering most cars have some form of grill protecting things, it surely cant hurt. In NZ at the moment, its autumn so we have plenty of leaves, and I've been picking up a substantial amount in my rads!
