I also weighted the Sensors and installed the equal amount of weight on the opposite side of the wheel..

I'm not willing to pull my tires off to add internal tpms, but I wish I had thought of it when I installed new wheels and tires🤔.

Ya, i know it doesn't look factory oem at all, but the old knees don't like checking each tire before every ride or after maybe running over some unavoidable road debris and wondering if you're losing tire pressure.

My idea is to delete the CD storage (I never use it for a long time ago) and fit the monitor inside it, trying to have the best and 'clean' look if possible.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys
1st of all, to say I did a search and found nothing... we have several threads here but nothing really specific
I would like to install a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) in my 996 Carrera.
(I usually check the pressure with my manual gauge before starting to go out for driving, although I had an issue suffering a puncture which I couldn't detect on time and ruined a new tire...
My idea is to delete the CD storage (I never use it for a long time ago) and fit the monitor inside it, trying to have the best and 'clean' look if possible.
Of course I would install the sensors inside the rims (not going for the external valve retrofit ones. So, my questions are:
1) do you know which aftermarket brand is good to go for?
2) Any example of a good looking display in this compartment ? I could see solar panels powered, chinese cheap staff... I want something basic, solid, and nice
Thanks so much in advance
Sub'd. I have toyed w adding aftermarket tpms but there's just been so many other priorities... For now, I combine the gauge and pump in one with a cordless 'oak and iron' compressor I bought off Kickstarter. I've since moved to Canada. It's available here on Amazon for a bit more $
OAK&IRON Battery Tire Inflator 2X Faster Inflation Portable Air Compressor 150PSI Cordless Tire Pump with LED Screen for Cars, Bikes, Motorcycles, and *****
. I'm sure it's in USA as well, or something similar. I tested it for accuracy against my quality JACO 60psi pressure gauge, which has 1lb increments. The results match. I've never liked the cheapie digital or analog gauges that estimate my tire pressure. My 996 has new tires and alignment, gotta keep her in fine fettle. Anyway, the compressor, while not automatic like a tpms, at least makes pressure testing a one step process. For track I'm sure a tpms is a major boon! If you find a cost effective solution, I'm in. Good luck 👍
Thanks for sharing it
Yes, something like this could work. The main unit is
Solar Powered and Wireless.
I need to see how to fit in the old CD storage compartment...
It's solar powered and it looks to me like the solar panel is on top of the unit, so it looks like it's intended to be placed on top of the dash where the sun can hit it. I don't think it would work in the console unless you can somehow remote mount the panel or bypass it and connect to vehicle 12v.
Well, you asked...
This is an inexpensive option that surprises me with its quality, so far. might also be good for some here if they don't use the lighter. I've installed 4 of these in the last year. 1 on a older work van inside rim/tire, and 1 on another old work truck on valve stems. 2 went on both my 996. So far so good. Time will tell. Tried the solar ones, they suk big time, 12v powered is the way to go imo
You have the option to mount the sensors on the valve stem, or when tires are off, can put a blob of silicone adhesive sealant near to inner valve stem and stick the sensor inside the rim. Just face the open end of sensor up. Use a strip of tape to keep it in place till the silicone dries. I recommend not mounting tire or driving till silicone dries. The cig lighter plug isn't European on this tpms head unit so it was very lose. I siliconed a thin vinyl pad on plug end that tightened it up nice and tight.
This tpms also measures tire temps and voltage. You can set the hi and low psi/temp alarm points. Also can change to bar/C, and has a usb charge port on the side of head unit.
For $29 bucks its a throw away if you don't like it....
Ya, i know it doesn't look factory oem at all, but the old knees don't like checking each tire before every ride or after maybe running over some unavoidable road debris and wondering if you're losing tire pressure. This nicely stops that for a very reasonable price while not looking to out of place in the 996. $29

Good!!!
This is a cheap solution at all!!
Probably a friend of mine with good knowledge of electricity could fine the way to connect it directly to power
I prefer inner rim sensors than the valve stem ones.
Once you do the tire replacement, It's the best way to fit them and do the correct balance to the wheel mounting
Ok you got me curious so I found this,,,,
https://www.bartecusa.com/tpms-retrofit-kit
it uses in the wheel standard style valve stem tpms sensors and has a tiny head unit... Looks like its small enough, I was thinking a 3d printed bezel that fit in place of the CD holder...
Not solar, very accurate and not expensive. Cant say how long it will last, but I have used 4 of them in the last 2 years. The unit can be Velcroed to the side of the bin. Tires have to come off or at least be broken down in the spot where the valve stem is. They have Duracell lithium batteries in them,
I found this one
(I don't like it, too many wires in center console... but It's and idea)

I had bought the same style as the one allcool linked in the past and could just not get anything to pair, picked up that one for $30 and it fired right up and got data, so for that price point I'm pretty happy. Putting the sensor in the rim would be great, my concern though is if you ever need to re-pair the device you're out of luck, but for $30 you could just get a second set until the next time the tires are off.
I installed this kit from amazon and had a great experience using it on a recent long road trip:

The sensors are a bit clunky on the valve stems, but after a while you forget about them. The screen fits nicely in the coin tray in the center console and could fit in the lower center console shelf or other areas I suppose. I have a GT3 center console delete, so it's current placement is perfect, especially when driving with polarized sunglasses, as the angle allows my lenses to see the digital screen, whereas looking at it straight won't allow me to see anything due to the sunglasses. Overall the system worked really well during my roadtrip, constantly changing with the temperatures. It also allows you to set high PSI parameters, which came in handy during highway driving on one particularly hot afternoon.
I've had the same TPMS as SoCalDan for about 5-6 years and would not do without it...The display comes on automatically when entering the car ( vibration sensor) . The display is mounted to the windshield for easy view , is solar powered, also has a USB charging port and cable that I have only needed to use twice in 5-6 years, most of the time I drive enough on sunny days to keep the display charged, but I did go for a couple of long periods where I either drove at night or not at all and needed to use the USB charger..I have replaced the batteries in the wheel sensors 2-3 times over 5-6 years but is quick and easy to do..The only thing I did different is I bought 4 factory style metal TPMS valve stems only to mount the Sensors to. Mounting those Sensors on a rubber valve stem will cause the rubber stem to flop too much... I also weighted the Sensors and installed the equal amount of weight on the opposite side of the wheel..
I used to hate TPMS systems when they first came out, but I have softened up to them now and can see their usefulness in safety and to save $ instead of ruining expensive tires due to simple slow leaks..
Thanks for your response
To me It's important for safety as well
I will try to have a look and do a brainstorming in order to find a good solution to have a nice and clean installation
Cheap and cheerful appeals to me so I got one of these myself. I don't like the sensors on my wheels, especially since my valve stems don't protrude much at all, so the sensor caps actually touch the rim surface at all times. But the accuracy is good, and required no fuss at all. Very handy. I'm not willing to pull my tires off to add internal tpms, but I wish I had thought of it when I installed new wheels and tires🤔. When I switch over to winter tires and rims, it will be nice and easy to switch sensors as well tho. It's all good.
I am still looking forward to receive the head unit to install it in the dash.
Once It would be there, I will pair the TPMS and connect to the "PCCM" (Porsche
Chinese
Communication Management)
Hi all
I've just come back from my Tyre's workshop
Next Monday I have a date with my electronic Car Audio installer.
he will install the "PCCM" with the bluetooth pad connected to the wheel valves
step by step...
Obviously my 996 doesn't have TPMS. I was very surprised when I picked up my brand new 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness, that it did not have TPMS. I thought this was legislated on all cars in Canada. Apparently it is not.
I do a visual check on my tires, be it the 996 or the outback. I've had tires loose air while driving before TPMS. I could always feel it. If a tire blows, TPMS doesn't do anything. I check my air pressures pretty regularly, especially during seasonal changes.
Previous cars have had TPMS. Really didn't check it all that regularly except when I would obsess of keeping the pressures exactly the same to the pound.
Not sure why TPMS is all that important for "Active Drivers"
Some years ago when driving through a highway around Madrid (Spain), I felt something going wrong ... the car was not keeping the right direction
In a few seconds I moved to the right and stopped the car.
I had a small puncture in the rear-right tyre... It was New with only 200 km ... I was driving probably close to 180 km/h and the inner tyre casing broke itself ...
The Tyre expert told me I probably drove 5 miles with low pressure and It became deformed. In case to detect immediately a minimal air loose It would be easier for security and money...
TPMS was mandated in the USA in 2007 due to the Firestone/Explorer legal case......Low tire pressure causing tire destruction/fatal accidents and roll-overs...
I hated TPMS when it was first mandated....Porsche owners were obsessing over 1 psi deviations, and deviations from one side to the other due to heat or the Sun ect..
But over time I softened up a bit and realized he safety and especially the $$$ that can be saved....The rear tires on the 996 cost $500 each and I have seen countless rear tires destroyed by low tire pressure..... The rear tire sidewall is so stiff you will not notice a low pressure situation untill it is too late...
I dont monitor the TPMS at all in any of my vehicles, but the light pops up right when I pick up a nail and has saved many tires on my truck and other cars. I would really like a TPMS on my 996 that would illuminate a light on the cluster. There are a few unused lights on my cluster I can use.
I'm going to research a bit more and find a TPMS solution with programmable set points that when out of range send a signal to an external terminal so I can trigger a light to illuminate.
if I make progress on this front, Ill post a write up for the group to tear apart. Haha
I see Juan is in Spain, I see the same kit on Amazon that he got on AliExpress, going to give it a try,
