Suggestion
Did it come with that motor originally, or did the owner replace the stock engine with a remanufactured X51?

I thought that if an engine was being replaced under warranty, they would only replace it with the exact same thing.

Let us know when you sell so we can help you find a nice TT to replace her with.

If that's the case, not sure the motor would be replaced with anything but stock if it failed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As I've mentioned a few times in the past, although I love my car and have dumped over $8.5k into it over the past three years or so, I've really been itching for a 6-speed (and, at the end of the day, I love the process of upgrading a car so I would not be too dismayed about having to do it all again).
So I found a very interesting vehicle. It is an 03 c42 (silver/black) with 80k miles. The owner is asking $42k, but here is the kicker: 1500 miles ago it got a reman motor under warranty, and the owner went with an x51! The car has been listed for some time, and I have no idea how clean it is or the options (other than full leather, which I know it has).
This seems to me like it would be a pretty good deal, even if there were some maintenance and cosmetic issues to deal with. What do you guys think
Are you sure about the x51? I thought that if an engine was being replaced under warranty, they would only replace it with the exact same thing. Otherwise a lot of folks who got replacements would have nice GT3 engines in their cars!
Price sounds in the right ballpark, but the market is pretty soft right now. Don't know about the engine replacement issue, but X51 package is supposed to be a great motor. Did it come with that motor originally, or did the owner replace the stock engine with a remanufactured X51? If that's the case, not sure the motor would be replaced with anything but stock if it failed. If you really love and want the car, pay to have a PPI done - especially with 80K miles on the car.
Scott, I understand your desire to get a 6 speed. I have no regrets about upgrading to a manual after my tiptronic 996. I would recommend you keep shopping. You will miss your unique color and aero kit. At $42k you are just under turbo territory. I have seen nice turbos for high 40s and low mile anniversary editions in the mid 40s. You already have a gorgeous car....don't settle for something that isn't exactly what you want.
Thanks again for the center caps. They look much better than the Kinesis caps. If you want me to keep an eye out for a theft recovery or minor project at the insurance auctions, let me know.
Thanks for the responses guys. I have a friend here at work who just gave me the same rationale about the turbo (said he would never talk to me again if I sold my car and did not by a tt). I've traded emails with the owner, and he said it was not originally an x-51 car, but that prior owner paid to upgrade it. He said the only reason he is selling it is because he wants the 09 cab. I have yet to get an answer about the reason for the engine replacment.
Mark, by all means let me know if you come across any intersting projects! Really, the wild card right now is what my car would fetch. With everything I've done, I'd hope it would at least get 25k, but I'll just have to list it and see what happens. The good thing is that I'm in absolutely no rush, I've got a good equity position in the car, and If I did not sell it I would not be at all upset (I do really like it).
Scott, I will keep you posted on any nice projects that I see. I checked cars.com and found several nice turbos in the low 40s. Here is one in a color I'm sure you will like a little better than silver.

That's funny you posted that car Mark. I saw it yesterday on autotrader, and it is by far the best deal in the country right now for a low(er) mileage 996. There are a few cheaper ones out there, but all have 75k miles or more. Part of my problem is that I just don't want to spend that kind of money (just bought the wife an 07 escalade, which was that kind of money, so I don't really want to do it again). Its really going to depend on what my car gets. Believe it our not, I've already got a few inquiries and I've only posted it on craigslist. We'll see what happens. Scott.
Scott, with the aero kit and all the nice mods you have done to your car, I will be surprised if you have any trouble getting $25,000 out of your car. Your color is stunning. All the detail work you have done on the interior and exterior really shows. I sold my salvage titled 996 tip for $22,500, less than a year ago. You have a clean title and the aero kit. The high miles might hurt a little, but not much. Good luck on the sale. Let us know when you sell so we can help you find a nice TT to replace her with.
I might sell my 996 and my wife's SL600 someday to buy a SL65 AMG Mercedes. They went for about 200k new and now they can be had for low 70s. I have read numerous articles about the SL65. They claim it is the fastest accelerating car they have ever driven (Car and Driver editors).
In the meantime, I love my 996 with a 6 speed. All the mods have turned it into my dream car. A Vortech SC wouldn't hurt either.
We'll just have to see. The market is so soft, and my car such high mileage, it should be interesting. The great thing is that I'm in no rush, so I've got time to just see what happens. I've already had a few email inquiries, and its only been one day on Craigslist, so I guess that's a good sign.
