I have owned and love my 02 996 C2 for the last 2 years, the car is hands down the best car I have ever owned, but I have made 2 mistakes, I test drove a 996TT and a Cayman S.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys I need some advice, here is the situation: I have owned and love my 02 996 C2 for the last 2 years, the car is hands down the best car I have ever owned, but I have made 2 mistakes, I test drove a 996TT and a Cayman S. I do mostly AutoX, 1 or 2 DEs a year and weekend drives. So for me preformance/handling is the most important aspect of a car. My dilema is what to do? my local dealer is selling a CPO 06 CaymanS for a very low price with exactly the option that I want and only 9kmiles.. I test drove the car and it is hands down the best car I have ever driven (handling wise) I have to admit that is better than my 996 with agressive alingment The 996TT is a beast, I love the looks and the fact that it has the "Better" engine but it would be a car with no warranty and costly repairs, but hopefully will not depreciate a lot more in the next 2-3 years.. I know the Cayman will depreciate a lot.. Has any of you gone from a 996 mk2 to a Cayman S ?? I would like to hear from you.. Thanks a lot for your help!

POST 2Original post

for my money, my 2 cents Keep the 996 and improve the handling best bang for buck but if you are truly tired of the old girl and want some new skin then it is is up to your priorities. Newer car option: Handling priority then yes to the CaymanS All out power and ability to add considerably more: 996TT and you can even improve the handling well beyond the cayman S too. (my pick btw)

TT with some motons... that's all you'll need. will run rings around the cayman

POST 5Original post

I'd hold tight for a bit longer as the 996 market is still declining and I'm going to guess that they will continue that way until the economy makes a turn around. That being said, the longer you wait the more interesting options will come up. The 987 is an amazing car but you will have to contend with a depreciation rate that is even steaper than the 911's (typcially). Plus do you want a car that is that easy to drive fast? They are a bit tricky at the limit but they don't challenge you that much. Especially in autocross, it's more of a point and shoot car. If that is what your looking for, pick up a miata, they're cheap, fun and easily as fast on an autocross course (Especially the new ones). I suspect and several of my friends with 987 and 986's have the same consistant complaint. Brilliant chassis but not enough power which always leaves them longing for more. my guess is you will have the same issue if you go this route. The turbo has it's allure especially at the track. Not sure how it will be on an autocross but it's a TT and you can get un-godly amounts of power from it. Not a bad choice I would think but again, I'm not sure how much fun that would be since it's a pretty heavy car in autocross and weight is always the enemy there. If you had to get out of your 996, I'd go with a TT. Let me throw this in to the mix. Wait a bit and get a 996 GT3. Brilliant car in every environtment, track and autocross. Amazing fun and all the attributes you want in a car, power, performance, handling, balance, adjustability for chassis tuning and mistique. Keep in mind there are a lot of things that can be done to your existing car for not much scratch to make it faster and more neutral. Sways to start, better tires or front control arms to hold you over as the deals will get better with time.
