Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I do own a C2 cab since C4S is more than what I want to spend and I could use the better RWD gas mileage.
Leading evidence: 'Use better rwd gas mileage' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use better rwd gas mileage' (1 discussions). Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Let's take a pole as to the best overall NA 996, based on any criteria you want.
Not including GT2, GT3, TT as these are clearly superior and based on a different motor. I also didn't want RMS to be a factor.

If money is no object, C4S is my choice since it looks best and is easier to drive to it's performance potential. That's the 911 on my wish list. I do own a C2 cab since C4S is more than what I want to spend and I could use the better RWD gas mileage. No regrets but I still vote for C4S.
Let's just get straight to the point: Mine is the best. No, not the model I own, but my specific car!
Now, I am sure that in about 5 minutes or less some weisenheimer will post a list of 'Ring times showing my specific car getting trounced, as well as some article from a car magazine saying that my specific car is the only NA996 not worth owning (better spend your money on an Acura, you know, front wheel drive increases corner exit times because you can get on the gas faster and it is better in inclement weather, much like the C4/C4S).
Screw you guys, I'm going home.
There is a lot of truth in what TD in DC says (especially the quote from Carmen). Well except it applies to MY car
But really what constitutes "best"? The fastest? Most reliable? Best handling? Easiest to drive? Best value? Most comfortable? Lightest?.....see what I am getting at? TD in DC statement that his car is the best is completely true for him. It is the best car he could afford and/or justify and/or have.
i chose the 40 anny based on performance and would vote for the C4S solely on looks.
my ideal non GT 996 would be a C2S w/ x51 - lighter in weight than C4S with the body/looks and brakes of the C4S.
I didn't add GT3, GT2, TT on purpose, as those are clearly superior cars based on a different engine. I wanted to take RMS and the GT factor out of the poll.
C2 because its just fun. and i know that when i hit an apex just right, it was me doing all the work, not the traction control, not the active yaw or torque splitting gizmo's and blackmagic.
I voted for the C4S as I own one...but I'll have to say if the 40th was available at the time of purchase, I just may have chosen that, but never know.....but I'll be totally content with any one of the cars listed there. porsche=perfection
I must agree, had a 4oth been available when I got mine I would have gone that route. I didn't know enough about 996's at the time, had I known, I would have waited 6 mo for the 40.
Here my biased assessment:
MY 99. Purest, most coherent looks, as originally intended by the design team. Lighter. The "hairy" 3.4 engine. Less extra gizmos, car already has plenty. And, finally, my favorite: the rear lower valance bump-out.
