I was sure I'd have to add the 3rd radiator but we ran Monday / Tuesday in 90 degree heat and were running 30 minute sessions both days and the highest value I saw was 113 degrees.
Leading evidence: 'Run monday / tuesday in 90 degree heat and were' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean filter every 3 months' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use 6C on the track all the time to monitor the water temp up and in my face.

Suggestion
During tracking months I typically need to clean the filter every 3 months.

They ALL said the stock was better and just keep a clean filter in it (though I really wanted the BLING from the K&N.

Luckily since cleaning the radiators and going to straight water w/ water wetter I've had ZERO temp issues this season.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

How many of you track your car with this intake.
I noticed at the track the other day that it seem'd like my car gets a touch soft power-wise after a few hard laps at the track. I can't help but wonder if the Intake's not doing the best job at keeping the hot air out. Is there a way to log intake air temps on our cars to confirm this? Has anyone else experienced this?
Maybe I'll try to add some reflective barriers around the intake and better seal it from the engine bay. There's arears around where the intake snorkle mates up to the K&N where it's not sealed all that well and could possibly be letting in air. Just as the top of the unit doesn't seal up against the deck mainly because the engine bay fan is in the way. (do I dare remove that fan and totally seal the to the lid?).
If i could log air intake temps I'd take the stock air box to the track and compare the two back to back. I'm almost ready to give up and go back to stock or to the Evo unit which seems like it would isolate heat much better.
Then again, maybe all of this is in my head. Looking for anyone that may have similar feedback.
Andy
I would go back stock with a brand new element. The surface area of the factory element can easily support more than the 296-320hp these motors put out.
Honestly, I really enjoy the noise of the intake on the street when the mufflers are on the car, otherwise even with aftermarket headers and mufflers my cars pretty quiet. Call it street bling if you will.
I guess what I'm more curious about is if there's a way to log intake temps to proove or disproove my curiosities.
Andy,
The OBD port has the Air intake temp. I have an OBD reader that displays the value in realtime called ScanguageII. This is something that I have used to determine before/after effectiveness of any aftermarket intakes or changes to the airscoop do the decklid.
However, regardless of what you have. When that car stops moving the air intake temp skyrockets. I leave my decklid open between sessions.
Do tell more about your experiments. I'm going to a test and tune day in a couple of weeks where I can get actual track readings vs. the stock box.
I wonder...the diagnostic mode for the climate control readout...I always use that for coolant temp...can it display the air intake temp too?
I think 36c could be air intake. not sure anymore.
I can tell you that 1c is certainly not the oil temp, unfortunately.
I use 6C on the track all the time to monitor the water temp up and in my face.
Ditto on that...it's always on 6C for me. Luckily since cleaning the radiators and going to straight water w/ water wetter I've had ZERO temp issues this season. I was sure I'd have to add the 3rd radiator but we ran Monday / Tuesday in 90 degree heat and were running 30 minute sessions both days and the highest value I saw was 113 degrees. Most of the time it stay'd in the 105-108 range.
The shop I have choses gave me the following info. These guys are in to race/street/classic and retro cars. They have a huge customer base and a fantastic reputation.
I purchased a K&N cold air intake (funny how we are talking about the heat added from a "cold air" intake) and was getting ready to install it when I asked about the performance increase I should expect. Mind you these guy can sell me theese parts and didnt know I had a brand new kit at home in the box.
The service advisor/race instuctor/ all aroound guru and the head mechanic and the owner (all on separate occation) said than on the 99' 996 (not sure of other years) that the conversion actually reduced power at the wheels after some driving. They said i could look at the dyno reports and that they had done significant testing (did not verify) to prove it was true.
They also had done testing on air cooled cars and saw benefits to making the change.
I asked several of them if I should put it on... all said NO, its not worth it...
Thats just what they said, again they could be selling me this. They ALL said the stock was better and just keep a clean filter in it (though I really wanted the BLING from the K&N. i opted to keep it stock and its so bloody quiet I cant hardly stand it...
<still looking> I think I will try the PSE Mod II as I have heard that and like it plus as far as I know there is no "dark side" to the Mod
Good luck
Ed
I have been tracking with this intake for 27 months and never had an issue with this setup no the track. The filter gets dirty a lot quicker if you track it. During tracking months I typically need to clean the filter every 3 months. I went ahead and bought a spare filter so if it looks dirty before heading out on a track weekend, I just swap it out.
I have one and think it's crap. I too have wondered about power loss and think my wing and factory setup with filter and fabspeed hi flow might work better.... I have the fab as well as a series one evo. The finish of the kn is cheap..... and they left out many parts. instructions written by a tech not engineer and worthless......
I'm going to an open lapping /test & Tune day on Friday....temps supposed to be hight 80's to low 90's so it should be a good test. I was hoping to have some reflective heat tape rigged up for better heat sheidling for the K&N but my schedule really looks like it won't allow me to put much time and effort into that. However I'm going to take the stock airbox and see what the difference is between the two for air intake temps.
Andy
Looking forward to your results. I have the K&N and think the design is crap. There's no way it keeps out the engine compartment air. My 2nd MAF sensor is misbehaving now also. The only thing that's keeping me from returning to stock is the time/hassle to do it. That said, I've never seen a performance drop at the track. I also really do like the sound the thing makes.
Ditto, also, I'm pretty sure kn dynoed a car with no moving air and the engine lid open meaning the testing was static and worthless. The stock setup has a nice ram air design that uses fresh air only from under the wing.
I'm going back to my kn panel and fabspeed mod after I get up off the couch.. I've been thinking this for about 6 months now. No matter what though, the kn help line techs are imo the same as the cheap parts they assembled to construct this garage sale looking item.....
I must agree that its cheaply made and the instructions are crap. I had to replace the rear spoiler bellow and notice that the air intake snorkel didnt line up with the deck lid. I wouldnt have notice it otherwise and to make it line up I had to block up the snorkel.
I have since gone back to the stock air box with a K & N panel filter. I do however miss the sound.
Im considering go to the EVO CAI. Any feedback on the EVO would be appreciated.
I had the EVO CAI in my 99 C2 and to be perfectly truthful....it didn't do much in terms of performance...just sound feedback. If the sound is worth $595 then go for it. It doesn't outperform a stock setup so it's just money wasted IMHO....the plenum was a different story.
Gents. Didn't want to leave this open ended so I'll post an update, unfortunatly I don't have any data to share.
I went to the track on Friday and got all of about 8 laps of dry running before it started to rain. The rest of the day I putted around learning car control skills. Unfortunatly that didn't allow me a good test environment for intake air temps with the K&N.
I'm not planning on hitting the track again for at least a few weeks so it may be too late in the year here in Ohio by then to get any good data either...but if I've got any updates I'll be sure to post them up here.
