As mentioned, I had 285/35/18 tires on my C2 Mk1 NB with GT3 suspension; only change I had to do was going from a 15mm spacer (stock 10 inch rear wheel) to a 7mm spacer due to rubbing (no rolled fenders).

After 17,000+ miles I can tell you that the handling is significantly better than the PS A/S and I'm only now looking at replacing the rears.

Yeah sure they are a compromise, but since I don't autox and it is my daily driver (12-15k per year) I didn't want to have to replace tires every 8 months.

With H&R lowering springs only (prior to the GT3 suspension upgrade) I was even able to run the 15mm spacers with these tires in the rear.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

However, I had Pirelli 285/35/18 rear with 225/40/18 front and it worked well.
Need new shoes. Got pricing on the following. Any advice on best selection will be appreciated
Goodyear F1 - Cheapest (would not have considered, but the price is killer)
Toyo T1R - next cheapest
Mich Pilot Sports (not PS2) - this selection requires a fair amount of difficulty, but ends up being the third most expensive.
Yoko's and Bridgestones are a minimum of $200 a set more expensive.
Thanks for the advice
These are the every day shoes, though they might step out to a party from time to time. Also, the Goodyear being priced is the F1 All Season. Sounds like boring, comfortable shoes
I had the GY Eagle F1 A/S on my last S4 - they were really an excellent A/S tire. Ditched the car at 2500 miles, so I can't give you any long-term impressions. Are you buying a tire to use year-round, to include winter use in a cold climate? If not too much snow, the F1 is a good choice. Call or email Gary at Tire Rack - he was really helpful with tire choices. He can be reached here:

You make compromises with A/S tires. Does it snow where you live? If so, I suggest you get two sets of tires. If you are just looking for summer treads, there are plenty threads on good value summer tires. Do a search.
If you're local to SoCal, I'll make you a great deal on a couple of front Pilot Sports (225/40/18). I seem to recall the tread depth is 7/32". Send me a PM if you're interested.
Thanks for the replies. I do understand the compromise with AS tires. Since I am in the bay area, snow is not a problem. Leaning toward the Pilots and just the PS not the PS2's. Any one have experience with the Toyos?
LiveNupe, let me know what you want for the fronts. If the price is right I am sure we can find a way to get them to NoCal.
I had the Toyos on for some time on 17 inch wheels. Good tire for the money. However, now I've on both cars Falken tires. The FK452 on the BMW (19 inch) is a great every day tire with reasonable wear. The Azenis RT615 that I've on the 911 (now 18 inch) seems to be a great compromise between a high performance tire and an R-Comp. Wear seems to be less good but acceptable as I drive the 911 only 6k miles/year. Tirerack doesn't have Falken but these two places do have them. I think Falkens are great tires for the money and honestly I don't think the much more expensive Pirelli P Zero Rosso i had before on the 911 were any better.

I've had the toyo T1R for daily driver duties, and compared to michelin ps2 the toyos are MUCH QUIETER, and in the rain were much better. (A friend has the toyos on his infiniti G35 and complains that the car hydroplanes terribly, but maybe that's because his camber is less aggressive than on a porsche.) I've had the car over 85mph in rain without a hint of traction issues. They really amazed me with their wet performance. I couldn't perceive any difference in dry performance. The michelins are too painfully loud for me.
{original owner 2004 C2 w/GT3 wheels & aerokit, now 89,000 miles and counting...}
Pilot Sport 2 are leaps and bounds above the Pilot Sports. Less noisy, and more grip. Better in the rain.
I'm in Los Angeles, so I barely see rain, but from my experience, it's much more confidence inspiring.
Original equipment for the MK2 is 285/30/18 so I'd go with this size.
However, I had Pirelli 285/35/18 rear with 225/40/18 front and it worked well. These two sizes are within 3% diameter difference front and rear so you should not have any issues with PSM or ABS either if you go for the 285/35 tire.
I have Kuhmo SPT's on mine (PO put them on right before I bought it)....7,500mi and 12 days of autox and they are about half worn, which is pretty good. They'd make a good long lasting street tire I surmise.
I have the Goodyear F1 A/S. Have about 2500 miles and so far I like them. Yeah sure they are a compromise, but since I don't autox and it is my daily driver (12-15k per year) I didn't want to have to replace tires every 8 months. Previous tires were Kuhmo ASX and they lasted about 25k on the rears.
My personal feeling is to stay away from the A/S compromise tire. When I bought my '03 C4 cab it had new 17" Pilot Sport A/S. I found them to have an overly soft sidewall. Once I got used to the car I found it to have very sloppy handling for a 911. (But still better than most) I picked up the 18" Sport Designs you see in my avatar and they came with a nearly new set of Cont. SportContact2's. These have a reputation as a fairly long lasting tire with only middle of the road performance. After 17,000+ miles I can tell you that the handling is significantly better than the PS A/S and I'm only now looking at replacing the rears. The front still have about 7mm left. The A/S? They are still sitting in the basement on the original 17's. I may swap them out for some actual snow tires this winter and pray for the white stuff. BTW, I am also running the Goodyear F1's on my SAAB 9-5 AERO, though not the A/S. It's a good handling tire that is great in the wet until you get any significant wear. About average wear for a performance tire so far. My .02
Lot's of good advice. Been reading the other related threads on the board on tire noise and the Toyos. Seems there are a few of you supporting the Sumitomos, some supporting the Toyos, lots complaining about PS2 noise. So what's a boy to do? Let's have a show of hands:
1. 285/30/18 rears, 225/40/18 fronts in Toyo T1R
2. same sizes in BFG KDW 2
3. same sizes in Yoko Advan Sport
4. same sizes in Mich PS2
Anyone recommend 285/35 for my Mk 1 car for the rears? Would they fit with a ROW M030 set up?
Thanks
Yes, they will fit. As mentioned, I had 285/35/18 tires on my C2 Mk1 NB with GT3 suspension; only change I had to do was going from a 15mm spacer (stock 10 inch rear wheel) to a 7mm spacer due to rubbing (no rolled fenders).
