Difficult to do but not impossible. That engine is variocam plus where your is only variocam. While you could swap your throttle cable throttle body to the new engine, get it in and probably running, it still wouldn't work properly. The DME is different software and to get the proper DME into the car would require replacing wire harnesses, and other electronics like the gauges, alarm control, and climate control. The DME communicates with the other control units with a K and L data line in a 99. While a variocam plus car uses CAN and BUS lines.

1st off, do you realize that you are quoting an ad from 12/17/07 ? The ad claims that it is a 996 engine not a 997 engine regardless of the incorrect year quoted. I have a 3.6 in my 1999 car. Install not performed by me but by some pros who knock this out all the time. Car runs great, all systems are go, still gets excellent hwy mpg, and the car is quite healthy as proven by some extremely good lap times. cheers. FWIW while the engines didn't change very much when going to the 3.6 997 the electronic systems did which is what makes putting a 997 engine difficult into any year 996.
