Suggestion

It's basically the same deal as replacing the RMS, but with out actually going that far.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There's nothing wrong now, but eventually my clutch will need to be replaced. On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being the most difficult, how big of a job is this? I've adjusted valves on my old 88 carrera, replaced water pump and timing belt on a BMW 325, and do all of my maintenance. Has anyone who considers themselves a novice at best ever took on this job and how hard was. I really would like to try it myself, but just trying to get an idea of what I'm up against. thanks

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention my car is a 2000 C4

POST 3Original post

From the step by step that I have seen, it doesn't look that hard, you just have to take your time. I'll look around and see if I can find the link again to the instructions and pictures. It's basically the same deal as replacing the RMS, but with out actually going that far. You just need to get the car up in the air.

I found it. http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/996rms/rms1.php

POST 5Original post

It is not a job for a novice skillset. Things always 'look' easy but execution is another thing. Toward the end of the clutch jobs(nonPorsche) I am always yelling expletives trying to get the damn tranny to align and asking myself why don't I just farm the job out?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ucrazykid for the link.

POST 7Original post

There may be a few special twists for the all wheel drive. I just posted asking if the engine needs to be removed for the C4 chutch change. My local indy claims it does, adding about twice the labor compared to a C2.

POST 8Original post

Not true. The drive shaft in a 996 comes off with only three bolts to the tranny and a slip fit spline on the front end. Simply remove bolts lower it down and remove. It should add 15-30 minutes to the job.
