Suggestion

Even if fully balanced, replacing the DMF with a LWFW/Single mass flywheel will have you loose the damping of torsional vibrations along the crankshaft and thus reduce its longevity.

Then you have the wearable rubber amd plastic items that will eventually fail on the cooling system and power steering that will eventually spring a leak that are always easier to replace with the engine out.

Maybe the 4.1L could run on the stock tune but it would probably not be the ideal solution.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in a pickle with my 996 4S that I purchased about a year ago with 90k miles. No bore score symptoms during the PPI, but a recent scoping at my oil change confirmed scoring has started. Cylinder 6 was described as "a bit worse than average" by a few mechanics, the rest are about at the line of "scuffing vs scoring". The consensus is that I likely have 1-3 years before symptoms appear. I figure if I'm going to need it eventually, have the money to do so now, and everything is getting more expensive, I might as well do a rebuild now and have more time to enjoy the extra power for longer. I'm finalizing a build with a reputable race engine shop in Canada. They have a relationship with Hartech and while they've only done half a dozen or so 996 builds, they have a great reputation as a race engine builder and have a very competent in-house machine shop. I'm trying to sort out where to draw the line on the car. it'll be almost entirely a street car. I do live near the mountains and have excellent roads to take advantage of, so it'll be by no means a garage queen or onramp ripper. I'm trying to find that goldilocks balance between visceral driving experience and reliability. Peak HP isn't particularly interesting. A Fister exhaust and Function First motor mounts are going on next week. I'd love your opinions on whats worth doing vs a waste for a car that isn't destined for a hard life on the track. What would you do and what would you skip? All prices are in USD: New connecting rods - $2,000 82mm plenum and GT3 throttle body - $600 Balanced rotating assembly = $800 New 996 or 997 fuel injectors. I've seen some shops are starting to use the 997 injectors on the bigger bore builds - $600 Custom ECU tune - $2000 What else should I consider while I'm in there? Anything obvious that I should be considering? Thanks in advance.

POST 3Original post

Go with the best internals and the best headwork that meet your user case requirements when rebuilding. You want durability amd dependability. Everything else you mention is a bolt-on part that can be upgraded or replaced during the rebuild or sometime after the rebuild. For sure, the three catastrophic failure causing bolt-on parts that are easily upgraded such as the IMSB, AOS (UAOS) and a new oem water pump every 5-7 years. Then with the engine out, you gotta consider clutch and flywheel if they were never done. Fresh fuel injectors, plugs, ignition coils, MAF, oxy sensors sure make sense. Then you have the wearable rubber amd plastic items that will eventually fail on the cooling system and power steering that will eventually spring a leak that are always easier to replace with the engine out. Best of luck with your rebuild. Nothing more certain than the need to eventually rebuild any 911 engine. Just a fact of physics.

POST 4Original post

The full balance is important too. Then you can add a LWFW is you choose. But it needs to balanced along with everything else.

POST 5Original post

I built my 4.0l with LN parts, including new K1 rods, IMS solution, UAOS, new flywheel and clutch assy, injectors, MAF, O2 sensors, CPS, knock sensors etc. I also paid $600 for a full match and balance including flywheel and clutch. Worth every penny in smoothness and likely longevity. I am still using the stick TB and plenum. Its fast enough (for now).

Be aware of the following: Even if fully balanced, replacing the DMF with a LWFW/Single mass flywheel will have you loose the damping of torsional vibrations along the crankshaft and thus reduce its longevity. It might live long enough for the intended usecase but the single mass FW will definitely reduce the service life of the crankshaft.

POST 7Original post

Would the addition of a dampened crank pulley be effective enough to improve longevity so that its comparable to stock engine?

POST 8Original post

OP - I like Hardtailer’s caution. Do you really require a LWFW? Is the extra .1 second 0-60 enough to offset cost and longevity trade off? A 4.1 will have a literal crap ton of mid-range torque, so you’ll live in the 4,000 rpm range anyway. A much cheaper, very reliable and effective option to improve rev responsiveness could be a smaller crank pulley. I have the FSI version and I like the small pulley for making rev matching on track easier since I don’t need to get so hard into the gas pedal on heel-toe. This makes it less likely I’ll unintentionally release pressure on the brake pedal.

POST 9Original post

I had Slakker build my 4.1L and will mention one thing that is not often talked about. The engine will get better with time and I'm not talking few thousand miles. I'm at 10k+ and can definitely feel the engine open up even more. The oil consumption has also decreased over the 10k miles telling me that the engine has been wearing in nicely. This is well supported by the UOA. From the list you have and based on your goals, I'd suggest the 997 injectors, which I elected to provide some headroom for tuning. Additionally, I'd add in the UAOS and maybe the deep sump for more oil capacity. If you plan on driving hard, as you should, adding a center radiator will help as well. I'd add the TB + Plenum later, and that's what I'm doing. The ECU should adjust for that but I'm somewhat not sure why a custom tune is an option? Maybe the 4.1L could run on the stock tune but it would probably not be the ideal solution. I figured that would be part of the build, as it was for me.

Who are these guys in Canada? I am in Canada also and am curious what are the local options to get a Hartech rebuild when the time comes for me to get that done (hopefully in a more distant future).
