When my RMS was repaired I only replaced the clutch disk.

when i had my third engine replacement, i had the clutch replaced 700 miles previously, and the porsche dealership told me that i needed a new clutch after only 700 miles of driving on the new clutch..

Turns out they replaced the RMS, and after inspecting the clutch, they claim I don't need one afterall.

Suggestion
When changing the clutch or RMS for that matter there is a "Special Porsche Tool" This tool holds the motor up from twisting in the mounts after the transaxel is removed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As I posted last week, my RMS is being replaced tomorrow, under warrantee. Since they're going to be in there, I'm considering replacing the clutch. How much should the clutch parts cost, and how much labor is there, considering the other repair?
Someone recently posted that their clutch was replaced at the same time the RMS was replaced, and the clutch charge was $100.....as this is not a warranteed item, I don't know how it could have been that cheap. I called an independant shop, which is not doing the work, and they priced out the following, for parts only:
Clutch disks
Pressure plates
release bearing
pilot bearing
TOTAL: $714.
The P dealer here is asking $800 for the job, if done at the same time as the RMS.
What do you guys think?
Is there a particular reason you are replacing the clutch? How many miles on your car? If the inspection showed that any oil from the leak was on the disc, I would demand that Porsche also replace the disc under warranty. Bring your camera.
Single mass instead of dual mass clutch. Less wind up resistance, last I heard. Arguably a little noisier than the dual mass. But who cares about noise?
When my RMS was repaired I only replaced the clutch disk. The cost was around $100 for the part. With only 6000 miles on the car some would say that was overkill. It would have been silly to replace the pressure plate or throw out bearing at such a low milage. The disk takes most of the wear and I really hacked on the clutch in those early miles. If I had 40,000 miles or more and they were taking my car apart to fix the RMS then I would replace the pressure plate and throwout bearing as well. Also the surface of the flywheel should be checked.
You're giving me some hope that my service dept is giving me reasonable advice....I have 16k, and when they said I might need a clutch, I was howling...of all my friends, the youngest clutch to be replaced was at 30k....I'm surprised yours was 85% gone @23k.....did they show you the plate?....by the way, the whole clutch kit is being quoted to me at $714. They're not charging me anything for labor.
sounds like you'll have some acceleration improvements... let us know how this works out and whether you hear any "whining" that is common with such an upgrade.....
when i had my third engine replacement, i had the clutch replaced 700 miles previously, and the porsche dealership told me that i needed a new clutch after only 700 miles of driving on the new clutch..
are the porsche dealers just telling us this crap to make money? I did it since it was only $400 and the car was 350 miles away in oregon so i couldn't see the clutch and the engine was out... but i was quite suspicious indeed...
I believe it is. First the shop quoted my some $$$ in the stars
I had told them to hold off, & when I got home my new issue of Automotion came
I check with them and got a price + 10% off
Here's the funny part, The shop buys from them also!
So they ordered the stuff up.
I can't wait to get her back on the road!
NO 996 since 12/09/04
yeah I had the rms replaced three times after the new clutch and my clutch is crap. I wonder how much of the oil got chucked on it, even though the advisor swore up and done it was not possible.
H20996--make sure that they ship you the right flywheel. When I spoke to Fidanza last (about a year ago), they told me that they don't make a 996 flywheel!
New to this board. I have a 1997 993 coupe that needs a new clutch. I have received quotes all over the place, ranging from 2 quotes at ~$1,300 to 2 quotes at ~$2300. Neither include a Flywheel replacement (that is the only consistent quote i get of an added $1,000).
I am new to Los Angeles and need some guidance here.. Any good reason why these quotes are so far apart? What should this cost? What guidance can you share so that i can ask the right questions?
I hope it is ok for me to add this to RLAndis string?
Rear Main Seal- keeps the oil in the engine wher the rear bearing of the crankshaft sits. Every car in the universe has one, those on 996's seem to fail a bit more often that we'd like. AS

When changing the clutch or RMS for that matter there is a "Special Porsche Tool" This tool holds the motor up from twisting in the mounts after the transaxel is removed. Most dealers should already have this tool because they do so many RMS jobs. When I had mine done in 99 the dealer would not take my car for a week until the tool came in. The techs in the shop would not do the job without the tool. I'm sure you can do the job without the tool but I would want the tool or it's equivalent used so as no to damage anything by the motor drooping to far. I was impressed at the time that they wanted the proper tool before they worked on the car. This might be an interesting question to ask the tech who will work on the car if it is an independent shop.
