Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys,
Big Porsche Tiptronic fan here.
Had many in the 996 964 993 Cayenne TubroS was amazing Beast ,Always fun and listens and never broken these Tips seem bullet proof
My 996 has 169K on the original engine and trans. It is making a Howling Noise from the left rear at speed,... Not Engine RPM.
25 to 50mph Loud like a bearing howl .. 50 to 100mph cannot really hear it more like fast whine.
I changed the brake pads and Rotor and still have it.... Took of the parking Brake pads and still have it... Changed the left rear Axle and still have it... Changed the rear Wheel Bearing still have it .
it's so weird.
So next ...Changed the Tip fluid it was brown but clean...still hear it... Sucked out the Diff gear oil and put a new quart of Mobil one in and still hear it.
No issues driving or shifting No codes. Just the damn howl
Jack it up and ran it to find the noise and doesn't make noise in the air .. SO weird.
Any suggestions. What would the shop do at this point if i took it in?
Any common Tip issues with Bearing inside the transmission? . I think the 996 and bunch of Mercedes all use the same part.
Ready to get new rear tires because the howl goes with tire rotation not engine RPMs.
Thanks
Seen some threads on the carrier bearings wearing out and also seen the final drive (r&p) gears worn pourly in another post. U may have to open the side plate and inspect.
How's the alignment? I've seen excessive toe cause tire howling.
Also old tires are likely to be really noisy. Swap the LR and RR wheels and see what happens.
Mine has a bit of a howl at 40-45 mph, only when sort of coasting or at a constant speed. I just had it looked at, and know it was test driven by the mechanic who has a 996.2 C4.
I am calling it normal - I just had the Tips fluid changed.
