The last post is not entirely true....I have an 04 c2 with the bose high end option.I needed more, so i replaced the head unit, with NAV and MP3, I replaced the fatory speakers to MB Quart, I also re-wired the entire car with good quality Signal and Speaker wire.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fatory speakers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best you can buy, costs around $5k' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend working' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm still uncertain if I'm going to install PCM2 in my '03 C4S....I know it looks better, but there is some great product coming on the mkt now, which allows IPOD intergration, such as the Pioneer piece just being released....my problem is storage space....I need the puny luggage space when we go on trips, so I'm concerned about where to mount amps, as I'll lose the Bose power when I bypass the MOST buss.....for those of you who have done this, where did you mount your amps, subwoofer, etc.....and did you use the Bose speakers, or replace them.

Suggestion
Sure you can put in a system for $2k if you do all the work, but if you want to hire a quality shop to do it for you, expect that figure to double if you want to replace all 11 speakers in the vehicle, amp, sub, wiring, etc..

Your system sounds very close to what I want...I'm waiting for the new Pioneer AVIC-D1...which is a 2 din nav/receiver....with a direct to IPOD connection, which allows you to run IPOD off touch screen.....did you do all that install yourself, or did a shop do it for you?

Suggestion
A good installer can use the same speaker grilles (mine glued an aluminum mounting plate to the inside of all of the grilles) so that it has a totally stock look.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the amp & EQ mounted in the trunk, similar to the picture posted above. You will have to replace the Bose speakers, they're not very good, they're basically designed to work only with the Bose amps. A good installer can use the same speaker grilles (mine glued an aluminum mounting plate to the inside of all of the grilles) so that it has a totally stock look.
I had a subwoofer box designed to fit in the passenger footwell. It reduces legroom, but again looks totally stock. The sub is controlled by a rotary pot that was installed in the dash along with the other switch (again looks totally stock).
One thing to remember is that 911s are not the average car for audio, you should only use someone who specializes in Porsche installation. There are tons of options, but not too many will give you the audio experience you might crave, and you don't want a hack job on the interior, which could reduce the resale value of the car.
Just my 2 cents...
from what i've been told from the most experienced high end audio shops, that with porsches, expect to spend atleast $4000, or don't bother. The stereo systems in these vehicles were not meant to be modified easily.. they told me countless stories of people upgrading various parts, such as random speakers, the amp, or spending a couple thousand and noticing no different at all. The labor rate will be very high as well, and making certain speakers fit in the small area you have to work with are all the more difficult...
just live with what you have, unless you want to spend $4,000+ just to get started.. $8,000 for anything half decent... the 996 just wasn't created to be an audio performer, unless you rip it all out and start over... which can potentially be not what you want to do.. adding an amp, will overpower the weak speakers.. adding speakers, will be useless, since the stock amp is so underpowered.. etc.. etc.. replace it all or leave it alone is the consensus from high end installers is what i've heard...
That's ridiculous. Even a Reuss system, probably the best you can buy, costs around $5k. I spent less then $2k, did all the work myself, and came out with a pretty damn nice sounding system.
I mounted my amp where the stock amp is located. It's a tight fit, but it works.
I mounted my sub controller in the rear center console cubby.
I highly recommend working with Rod at

he knows his 911s.

NOT
have to spend $ 8,000 . If you wanted to live with what you had, you wouldnt have bought a Porsche.....

Hey Richard
I did the install myself, It wasn't all that hard, just had to take my time. Still lots of room for luggage and no overheating Problems what so ever. If you plan on doing this job I will try and help you anyway i can.....
If you do it yourself, that's one thing, but 1/2 the cost of installing a high quality system is labor. Sure you can put in a system for $2k if you do all the work, but if you want to hire a quality shop to do it for you, expect that figure to double if you want to replace all 11 speakers in the vehicle, amp, sub, wiring, etc.. and if you want the best of the best, expect it to go to $8k..
myself, I have no idea how audio works, so I wouldn't even attempt it.. but to the do-it-yourselfers, all the power to you, you'll save lots...
