We have done hundreds of consoles over the years, and when we used the '99 material, it performs in an unusual way under heat and curing.

It was the soft touch feel...I remember my 97 Boxster had a different feel....more rough...if thats what you have the prep work will take a lot....I bought a new one on ebay because I scratched my original one...it was the same as was on the car...it may have cost $150 or so....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I see Eric can't paint up the 99 consoles. My friend is looking at a 99 to buy. Does anybody know the cost of a new rear center console? And does that include the parking brake "boot" (in quotation marks because it's plastic)?
Thanks
Just from looking at them (when installed in the car so I don't know what they look like underneath) it seems to me that the only difference is the finish on the 99's looks like it wouldn't take to painting as well.
We can supply painted consoles for ALL 996/986 models. The problem is, the material on the '99 996 cannot be properly bonded to automotive finishes, so we cannot use it as a core.
If your friend needs a painted one, we can supply without a core swap, or we can get you a factory console in the soft touch finish if they prefer.
Just let me know.
Thanks.

Well, he hasn't bought his yet, but he found one copy that looks pretty good and I'm trying to figure out for him what it would take to clean up the interior. What would a factory one cost and what would a painted one cost? (you can PM me if need be)
Thanks,
Richard
I have a 99 and had mine painted...just depends on the prep...mine has lasted a few years without any issues....if the body shop knows what they are doing...they can do it.
You can pick up a 2000+ console on Ebay for a few hundred dollors, sometimes less. The 99's had a bumpy finish. sort of like a basketball. Starting in 2000 it went to a smooth finish. I have an extra one in Savanah beige that I bought on Ebay as mine had some scratches. Will be swapping it out soon and them I will be selling the old one.
I wonder if the C4, which is a late 99 and has all the 2000 updates, has the 2000+ console? It was the soft touch feel...I remember my 97 Boxster had a different feel....more rough...if thats what you have the prep work will take a lot....I bought a new one on ebay because I scratched my original one...it was the same as was on the car...it may have cost $150 or so....
The material CAN be painted, as stated above. However, to do this perfectly right, to absolute perfection, there are certain steps needed and this material, in native form, will not properly bond to the chemicals used.
We have done hundreds of consoles over the years, and when we used the '99 material, it performs in an unusual way under heat and curing. If certain added steps are taken, it can be 'coaxed' to work, but in the end, far better results are found with newer consoles.
Factory option cost: $730
Our price: $499
On sale now at BumperPlugs.com: $399
New console parts only, less than $200.
I have a '99 and had it painted a few months ago and am happy with the results.
But I'm not a perfectionist either, probably too soon to tell if there would be long-term bonding issues but it looks pretty much exactly like I expected it to look.
It's an 8 year old car that is a daily driver so it's going to get a little beat up....give it character as far as I'm concerned! lol
Yes, they are all the same for all 996's, the issue is the '99 material, which was replaced in '00 with something far superior.
We do this often, by simply supplying the new console painted, and the customer can just sell the old '99 on eBay.
OT: (well a litttle) Why in the hell is it called a "rear" console when it is in the front????? Maybe because it is close to my "rear" end?
On a more serious topic, Eric is that 399 out the door sans core return?
