Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got back from Harbor Freight....and it was just a matter of time until some money mongering moron came out with it....yes....it's a universal set of two different sized sockets with reverse threads similar to a large EZ-Out designed to remove the wheel lock nuts. Even worse....the set costs $4.00. So now there's a $4 item designed to defeat our expensive wheel locks. I'm all for innovation and the free enterprise system....but I hate to see items like these made so readily available to the public at large. I wonder who will end up being the most frequent buyers of these items???

OK, I'll make a guess..... wheel lock nut thieves? Seriously, not a good thing indeed!

POST 3Original post

Why do you even need the locks? Do you not garage your car?

POST 4Original post

$4.00 could turn into $4000 pretty quick, sounds like a better investment than housing or the stock market!!! Heck, only takes some big ***** and a few minutes of feverish, look over your back work.

POST 5Original post

theyve had these for years... what happens if you loose your wheel key and need to change a flat tire. Wheel lock are not thief proof, just a quick deterent. If they want them theyll take em...

People like me that always seem to lose the keys? I've always found wheel locks to be a huge PITA. YMMV.

POST 7Original post

That's what insurance is for. Take the insurance money and buy NICER wheels.

POST 8Original post

i work at discount tires and if someone doesn't have there wheel lock key we just break the wheel locks off... you would be suprised how easy it is... takes a special socket two wacks with a hamer and then you just twist off... yeah so wheels locks are a waste in my opinion....

POST 9Original post

all great info here...thanks. I like that now I know the pros and cons..and what to expect and not to expect when it comes to my wheels. but...yeah I dont usually park my car where it is readily available to be stolen...but I guess no one does.

POST 10Original post

My buddies car was just broken into and they stole the lock from his car then he qas screwed if he got a flat, had to use one of these sockets....

POST 11Original post

A trick that often works is to take a twelve point deep-well socket that's just slightly smaller than the "locked" nut and drive it on with a good hammer. My 88 special edition has wheel locks that simply spin freely and until you remove them there is nothing to "grip".

POST 12Original post

So here it is IMHO: Wheel locks are like any other deterrent for your car. For example, a flashing red light on the dash tells most people the car has an alarm system. So as the thief is going through a parking structure, street or wherever, they are usually going to pass on a vehicles with the flashing red lights until they find one that does not have one, that is there victim for the night. So as the thief is looking for wheels, they will look for ones that do not have locking lug nuts as it is too much hassle for them. Yes if they want those specific wheels or car they are not going to worry about any deterrents, but these thieves have been doing this for years and are not bored and just out looking for a bit of fun or excitement for the night, or even to get a little money to get a fix. If you have all of the deterrents and they pick your car out others that do not, similar cars that is, then more than likely you were targeted. So does the flashing red light in the dash really mean the car has an alarm system? Does a sticker on the window saying it has an alarm system really mean it does? I have also seen 'fake' wheel lock covers. Thieves are not going to take the chance to find out, if there are other victims without these deterrents around them. My suggestion is to use deterrents or don't leave your car out in public if you are that worried about it (with or without them) Oscypek...I can't believe that you would not call the owner of the car to ask them about the socket for there locking lug nuts. But then of course I doubt you see too many Porsche's at Discount Tires....I wonder if they know how well of a spokes person you are for them

POST 13Original post

Locks and alarm systems are just to keep honest people honest.

POST 14Original post

demon i forgot to mention that the customer told us to do what we had to... we don't just go and break off lugs just cause they are in the way... but yeah assume what u want

POST 15Original post

Steven: Then you'd be amazed at the number and variety of Porsches I see at Discount Tire of Bellevue (WA) each time I visit or happen to drive by.

POST 16Original post

This is exactly why I welded my wheel locks on. A big F-U to those wheel theiving bastards.
